Wild Swimming in April | 11.8°C Cold Water River Submersion

4/15/2021

Aprils Wild Swim :D Cold water has lots of reported health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, heightening your mood, increasing energy levels, metabolism, circulation and mental fortitude & endurance. It can also reduce stress levels; by exposing your body to cold in a controlled way, you may find that your stress response to everyday life stressors is reduced. I always have a lovely sense of wellbeing for a good couple of days after a cold swim. Just remember to keep it short, and listen to your body.
COLD WATER SAFETY
Cold water can be dangerous if it isn't respected.

Here's some cold-water safety;
- Don't go alone
- Never jump in - ease yourself in slowly, to avoid cold water shock. If you shock your body, you will involuntarily gasp due to the cold, which can cause you to inhale water (drown) - It will take your breath away - control your breathing and don't allow yourself to hyperventilate
- Stay within your depth and always avoid fast moving water and strong currents
- Wear water shoes to protect your feet
- Don't stay in long - always come out before you start shivering. Hyperthermia only usually becomes a risk after 30 minutes, but listen to your body
- Before getting in, make sure you can easily get out
- Stay close to the edge while you check that your body can handle the drop in temperature and that you can maintain normal use of your limbs - If it doesn't feel right, get out
- Bear in mind that your body temperature will continue to drop for a while after you get out of the water - this is called 'after drop' and is the result of the cooled blood in your extremities returning to your core
- Go in warm, and have a towel, lots of warm clothes and a warm drink ready for when you get out
- Don't drive until your temperature has returned to normal
- Never go straight from cold water into a hot shower - let your body temperature return to normal first
- Don't do a cold-water immersion if you have heart or other health conditions that may make it especially dangerous
- It is always best to start wild swimming in the summer months, and continue regularly into the colder months to allow your body to gradually acclimatize to colder and colder water

And then of course all the normal wild swimming safety applies too - always do your own research and get the relevant advice first - I'm not an expert :)

For an idea of how different water temperatures feel, check out
https://www.outdoorswimmingsociety.co.... For comparison, an indoor heated pool will vary between 26-31°C. Anything below 12°C will feel freezing cold.

SURVIVAL CHALLENGE! Lost In The Woods Overnight With Only A Day Bag | Building A Natural Shelter

4/13/2021

I spent a night in the woods at 3°C with only my day bag, to live out a scenario of becoming lost on a day hike. I managed without a tent, sleeping bag or sleeping mat by attempting to build a natural shelter using sticks, leaves, moss and bark. Also, by creating a small fire, saving my food for late at night and staying active when I got cold. Although it wasn’t the most comfortable night, I managed a bit of sleep and woke safe and well the next morning, ready to take on the day.

It goes without saying of course, but never put yourself in a survival situation unless you have a solid exit plan if things go wrong. This ‘lost in the woods’ scenario is just that – a scenario. In reality I know the area well, was not actually lost and was not far from safety in case I needed to bail.

Wild Swimming Quickie! | 11°C Cold Water Immersion In A River In March

3/25/2021

Just a quick one today! I'll try and do a longer video on cold water swimming when I have more time. Cold water has lots of health benefits, such as boosting the immune system, mood, energy levels, metabolism, circulation and mental fortitude.
COLD WATER SAFETY
Cold water has many health benefits, but can be dangerous if it isn't respected. Here's some cold water safety;

  • Don't go alone
  • Never jump in - ease yourself in slowly, to avoid cold water shock. If you shock your body, you will involuntarily gasp which can cause you to inhale water (drown)
  • Control your breathing and ensure you don't hyperventilate
  • Stay within your depth and of course avoid fast moving water and strong currents
  • Wear water shoes to protect your feet
  • Don't stay in long - I was in for 3 minutes here. Always come out before you start shivering
  • Before getting in, make sure you can easily get out
  • Stay close to the edge while you check that your body can handle the drop in temperature and that you can maintain normal use of your limbs
  • If it doesn't feel right, don't do it
  • Bear in mind that your body temperature will continue to drop for 10 minutes after you get out - this is called 'after drop' and is the result of the cooled blood in your extremities returning to your core

Starting A Fire With Knife, Ferro Rod & Birch Bark | Bushcraft & Survival Skills!

3/18/2021

Starting a fire in damp conditions is no easy task! But with the right natural materials, some patience (and a dose of luck haha), it can certainly be done. Plus it’s really rewarding too! This was the first time I've tried starting a fire this way with damp materials, so I was really chuffed when it took :D There were 2 attempts prior to this one where the fire died shortly after I'd transferred it to the Bushbox, it's a reallllly fine line between feeding it and smothering it especially when things are a bit damp. This is a 5 minute video but in reality it took me over 2 hours to get that cup of coffee.. if at first you don't succeed and all that!

3/7/2021

The Ashridge Boundary Trail is a 16-mile circular walk in the Chiltern Hills, which passes through ancient woodland and beautiful rolling countryside including Ashridge Forest, Ivinghoe Beacon and the Golden Valley. I lost the trail and ended up doing 20 miles but had a great time with a bit of night hiking thrown in :D

Thank you so much for watching 😊 Claire

Our Winter | An Appreciation of Simple Things

2/21/2021

I only decided to make a short winter film in early February, but this ended up taking weeks to create! I'm just learning filming, so filming the different elements with my professional photography gear took lots of time, with lots of visits to our local outdoor places. Filming myself with the DSLR was also tricky, but really fun to learn. I learned how to create a night sky time-lapse, how to use an external mic and had a go with voiceovers and recording sounds. I really loved putting this together and hope to try another one in the spring if I have the time. Hope you enjoy!
