Back in the spring I started becoming unusually breathless, having issues with my heartrate and experiencing chest pain and exhaustion. As the months passed, I gradually became unable to do the things that I love, and I'm now at a point where I'm struggling with many aspects of day-to-day life. In May I was treated for costochondritis, which didn't work. In June I was told that a cyst in my spine was likely causing my issues. But actually, it turns out that I have a chest wall deformity called pectus excavatum, which means that faulty costal cartilage is causing my sternum to sink down into my chest cavity. This had gone undiagnosed my whole adult life as it's been obscured by breast tissue, but has now become severe, and my sternum is now compressing my heart. I have a Haller Index of 6.5 (measured on CT at inhale) and currently have a squished right ventricle and atrium. I’m having further tests to try to figure out what's happened in there, and being referred on to a specialist cardiothoracic surgeon I don't know what the future holds, but I want to be hopeful that this is a setback that I can eventually recover from So this is my journey so far - 3 failed adventures and a lot of frustration. There’s loads of floor space inside this two-person shelter, although I found the headroom a lil low, and the poles at the entrances were a bit annoying. But a cosy time was had, and I munched my way through my first French ration pack. I had high hopes but I think I picked a bad box for my tastes – ‘menu B’, which unknown to me contained a lot of fish, not my thing! The beef tortellini was lovely though, as was the dark chocolate This tent weighs about 3.3kilos, so it’s not light, especially for a single skin shelter (although it’s lighter than canvas army tents such as the 1990’s Dutch KL-94). It also doesn’t have any mesh screens, so there’s no way of closing the tent to keep the bugs out unless you shut it up entirely. There are thin ventilation panels along each side though My trail cam caught a hare and the night was peaceful, so I’ll have to try it again in the rain and let you know how it performs in weather Gear List

I cooked up a delicious dinner on the firebox; smoky sausages with smoky paprika and parsley mash and gravy. Had to evict more spiders than I would have liked but had a lazy morning of relaxing in heavy rain and spotting deer. The tent was a little leaky, but I loved the foresty, bushcrafty vibes, it kinda felt like camping out under a tarp with a tent at the back. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it, but started by hanging the middle tie-out point from a ridgeline between two evergreens, making use of the surrounding foliage for camouflage I kept securing different points until I’d created a sort of floating cube shape, which I then pegged into the ground, covered with looooads of camo netting, leaves, twigs and moss to blend it in as much as I could I really loved it. It wasn’t the stealthiest that I’ve ever made, but it was good enough, and inside was huge! It had such den vibes, and I had a beautiful night in the woods, cooking meat on my firebox and hanging out with all the small critters After a long sleep and bacon baps, a thunderstorm rolled in with rain and loud rumbles and booms. Early in July I had a beautiful night out in the woods, trying the KL-94, a Dutch ex-military canvas tent from the early 90’s. Apparently, things from the early 90’s can now be classed as vintage, but I can’t quite get my head around being old enough for that to be the case haha! I loved this tent! It had a thick rubbery floor, heavy fabric walls and chonky metal poles and stakes. I bought a big ol’ vintage mallet and had a bit too much fun swinging that around. I also bought in a 24Hr Dutch ration pack, which was actually quite delicious! I had a lovely night out munching my way through that, trying to avoid getting eaten alive by the bugs, and admiring a munty caught on my trail cam just behind the tent This is a really heavy shelter - about 6.5 kilos, so not one I'd want to carry in in a rucksack. It was so dark inside the tent, that I slept for 9 hours in mid summer! I’m not sure how this would perform in rain, but I will take it out in some wet weather in future and let you know Gear List
