This was so lovely! I arrived on a moody April afternoon with my small tarp and was a little unsure what to do with it, but I concocted a weird lil shelter inside the stone walls that was just perfect for keeping off the gentle rain. I even had my own personal back garden tap (a spring just behind the building), a visit from a lovely newt, and 8 hours solid sleep.. bliss *Do be careful with old man-made structures. Some of these further down the line I wouldn't have trusted due to the hill behind encroaching on them and making the walls bent and unstable. This one was further from the hill and remained nice and square and solid. I would personally avoid old structures with their roofs still on too, as the roof is the first thing to go. I do enjoy this kind of camping but give each structure a lil risk assessment and obviously if you feel like there's any real risk of it collapsing, stay away from it GEAR LIST

I’d decided to go out for a stealth with my lovely, second-hand British Military Bivi. Then I decided to get myself a 24hr ration pack to go with it. And then I thought, why not head out to an area fairly near an army base to see if I could go 24hrs undetected. So it kinda turned into this army-themed thing I settled down half a km from the base in public woodland, with it just in view through the trees. I was a sensible distance away so that aspect of my endeavour was kind of a non-issue, but the woods on this warm April day were absolutely teeming with people and dogs So, I would be hoping to go unnoticed by using my low-profile, camo shelter, being quiet, staying low and not moving around too much I really loved this one, getting to test out my stealth skills (I do love to hide!), munching my way through my first ration pack (although there was way too much for me to eat within 24hrs in there), and being entertained by the lovely doggos running about This was a simple night out. Under the trees. Under the moon. Listening to the birds and the Muntjac. I didn’t even bring my usual night-time filming lights, only using the red light on my head torch for this one, in the hopes that I wouldn’t be seen. I had a nice sleep, feeling stealthy and hidden and kept everything crossed that the morning doggos wouldn’t decide to alert their owners to my presence GEAR LIST

💦 In cold water, don’t jump in when unacclimatised (risk of cold shock & potential drowning), work on your tolerance gradually, get a good feel for how your body responds to it and don’t underestimate the after-drop – your body temperature will likely continue to drop for a period of time even after you exit the water and get dressed. Not accounting for this may result in hypothermia post-swim, which, even if mild can cause confusion.. not ideal out in the middle of nowhere ⚠️ It’s good practice to be aware of any bodies of water upstream that could potentially flood into the river that you’re crossing, or swimming in, or camping near. We all know and expect that natural lakes can burst their banks and flood after heavy rain. But certain man-made reservoirs and dams can be particularly risky as the rivers below them cannot be expected to behave in such predictable ways. This river crossing above the gorge for example can be unexpectedly flooded with no warning, even when there has not been heavy rain in recent days. With this type of balance tip dam upstream, unless you’ve actually been to check out the water levels up at the reservoirs, there’s no knowing if or when the water level might reach its tipping point and suddenly be released, and so crossing or entering the river at all is best avoided. Always check your map to see what might be lurking upstream That being said, adventuring and life in general is never risk free. So be aware, be prepared, make sensible-ish decisions and have fun |
