Trying a bit of mesh tent & tarp camping! I decided to use just the mesh inner from my claustrophobic & fairly awkward lil Snugpak Ionosphere for this, leaving the outer fly at home and instead pairing it with a lightweight tarp overhead This turned out to be a perfect combination :D the mesh tent kept the hoards of spiders off me while I slept, so I didn’t need to use a head bug net for a change. And the open tarp formation above, propped up with my trekking poles and sticks, allowed me to see all around me and really feel like I was outside, while still being protected from any rain I had such a beautiful autumn night out! I cooked the most delicious chicken and chorizo baps, slept soundly in the fresh woodland air, and found an amazing skull (which I thought was a badger, but according to my very knowledgeable viewers, is actually a fox!). Boris the Fox has now joined the Dead Gang in my living room, along with my deer, sheep and mountain goat skulls. Very pleased to add a fox to the collection. He has some mean ol’ teeth! This was one of my favourite set-ups, being so open but protected. I’m not sure that it would hold up well in wind, but it was great for a sheltered woodland camp. Gear List

The Day I’m in Love – Anthony Lazaro Waltz for the Dawn – Aren Park I Want To – Livingrooms Losing Streak – Paper Planes Leaves – Roy Dahan Celestial Rhythms – Ariel Dahan All from Artlist with license A Stealthy Den against a Fallen Tree 🍂 Armed with a small tarp, some pegs, cordage, camo netting and a trekking pole, I headed out into the foggy woods to create some kind of shelter against a big fallen tree It wasn’t perfect or invisible, but it was pretty low-key and I had the best time sheltering out of the light rain, watching leaves fall from the trees and spotting deer. I saw two bucks with their majestic antlers, one was a beautiful white boy, which I’d never seen before! And had a cosy night in my autumn nook Typically, this lil woodland has no people wandering around in it, no road noise, but it turns out, it’s right under a flight path instead (there’s always something haha!) So, it’s back to the drawing board with finding a quiet local place to camp. I’m gonna find somewhere one day I just know it! 😬🤞 Gear List

Aves – Rush Hour Narrow Skies – With the Earth American Legion – Reflections Aerian – Zephyr Monument Music – Majestic Whispers All from Epidemic Sound, Artlist & Uppbeat with license It was a windy day in mid October, and I decided to try camping in an old abandoned mining trench, with a tarp for a roof! At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

This turned out to be an absolutely beautiful night. It was chilly, with temperatures hovering just above freezing, and actually dipping a little below in the early hours. After the sun set, there was a bright moon, and after the moon had sunk below the horizon, the milky way could be seen hanging above my tent, along with pastel hues of pink and green from a very faint aurora As for the tent.. I’m perpetually looking for the ideal tent for my multi-night trips. This time I was trying ‘The One’ by Gossamer Gear. This is a one-person, single skin, sil nylon shelter. Functionality and performance wise, my favourite lightweight trekking pole tent in my DCF Durston Xmid Pro1.. but I just can’t get on board with how blue and un-stealthy it is. I love the look amd feel of my Lanshan Pro 1, but it repeatedly requires seam sealing, and isn’t overly reliable. So I figured this one might be a happy compromise between the two. This is what I was hoping for;
It’s definitely light, at 630g all in. The colour.. it’s not exactly what I was hoping for. The listing showed a grey tent, which would be perfect as it would just look like a rock, but in reality, it seemed to me to be more of a greeny blue. But, the colour seems to change depending on weather conditions, and in dull cloudy weather I was pretty happy with it. And the seams are factory sealed, which is amazing as I can’t stand seam sealing myself. So, this one should be waterproof straight out of the bag, hurray It was also easy to set up – just peg in the four corners and stick the trekking poles in. There’s just the one door, with the back having a large mesh ventilation panel under a lip to keep the rain out. Being single skin, condensation will always be a consideration. As with all single skin tents, a bivi bag to cover the sleeping bag and something to mop up the walls of the tent are essential. Room inside was adequate for my sleep system and gear, and the vestibule is pretty large. Headroom is great. There’s also a built in ‘washing line’ in the vestibule (handy!), which doubles as a guy line that you can use to furl up the vestibule – a great option for cooking in the rain. There’s also side-wall tie out points, which give extra space inside and add stability to the shelter The floor is thin (the entire tent is composed of 10D ripstop silnylon) so I popped a lightweight ground sheet underneath for a little extra protection. In the morning, the weather started to come in. The lil tent took the rain just fine, I didn’t notice any leaking at all and it took gusts of up to 36km/h with no issue. This is pretty standard mountain weather so nothing out of the ordinary, but reassuring none-the-less. I’ll try to get it out in some slightly more demonic weather at some point to see how it fares Gear List
