Ahh, this is not a video that I wanted to make! Back in the spring I started becoming unusually breathless, having issues with my heartrate and experiencing chest pain and exhaustion. As the months passed, I gradually became unable to do the things that I love, and I'm now at a point where I'm struggling with many aspects of day-to-day life. In May I was treated for costochondritis, which didn't work. In June I was told that a cyst in my spine was likely causing my issues. But actually, it turns out that I have a chest wall deformity called pectus excavatum, which means that faulty costal cartilage is causing my sternum to sink down into my chest cavity. This had gone undiagnosed my whole adult life as it's been obscured by breast tissue, but has now become severe, and my sternum is now compressing my heart. I have a Haller Index of 6.5 (measured on CT at inhale) and currently have a squished right ventricle and atrium. I’m having further tests to try to figure out what's happened in there, and being referred on to a specialist cardiothoracic surgeon I don't know what the future holds, but I want to be hopeful that this is a setback that I can eventually recover from So this is my journey so far - 3 failed adventures and a lot of frustration. 💦 In cold water, don’t jump in when unacclimatised (risk of cold shock & potential drowning), work on your tolerance gradually, get a good feel for how your body responds to it and don’t underestimate the after-drop – your body temperature will likely continue to drop for a period of time even after you exit the water and get dressed. Not accounting for this may result in hypothermia post-swim, which, even if mild can cause confusion.. not ideal out in the middle of nowhere ⚠️ It’s good practice to be aware of any bodies of water upstream that could potentially flood into the river that you’re crossing, or swimming in, or camping near. We all know and expect that natural lakes can burst their banks and flood after heavy rain. But certain man-made reservoirs and dams can be particularly risky as the rivers below them cannot be expected to behave in such predictable ways. This river crossing above the gorge for example can be unexpectedly flooded with no warning, even when there has not been heavy rain in recent days. With this type of balance tip dam upstream, unless you’ve actually been to check out the water levels up at the reservoirs, there’s no knowing if or when the water level might reach its tipping point and suddenly be released, and so crossing or entering the river at all is best avoided. Always check your map to see what might be lurking upstream That being said, adventuring and life in general is never risk free. So be aware, be prepared, make sensible-ish decisions and have fun It was early March, and I had arrived toward the western border of Eryri, for my last trip of winter. It was pleasantly mild for the time of year, 14°C.. my perfect hiking temperature! I had 4 days of food with me, my supplies and home on my back, and a thirst for adventure  Day 1 I was on my way to a wide valley surrounded by low peaks, but first I would have to travel across some boggy ground. Still squelchy everywhere from winter wetness, the going was slow, not helped by a gate that I needed to use being in disrepair, and having big ‘ol rusty nails sticking out of it. After straddling the adjoining fence with my huge rucksack on and nearly getting stuck, I eventually I made it on to a track, which was easy going in parts, and in other parts completely flooded and full of lovely frogs After passing a majestic sheep, perched on top of his hay bales and looking like a king with his loyal subjects surrounding him on the ground below, the track led me into the valley, and across a ford, which I stumbled across and gave my nice dry right foot a refreshing dunk into. And then I reached the lake – Llyn Hesgyn. From my position on the track, the area surrounding the lake looked boggy, so I decided to head up the hill next to me to the east, and find a pitch there for my first night The weather was turning. The temperature was dropping and there was light rain in the air. I put on my rain coat and starting trudging upward, following a sunken drystone wall all the way to my first lil summit. I’m not sure what this one is called; my maps says both ‘Craig yr Hafod’ and ‘Cyfiau’, although I’ve no idea if those are just the names of the westerly and easterly slopes, respectively Up by the 534m summit there was a perfect, grassy lil clearing for my tent. From here I could see the peaks on the other side of the valley, where I’d be headed tomorrow. But for now, I just wanted to pitch my tent, get cosy and have my dinner. This one was so gorgeous A few days of peace & freedom in the Rhinogydd, full of moonbeams, autumn colours, beautiful views, wind, rain, mud, and adventure.. Day 1 – distance walked 4.1km It was a still and pleasant Autumn afternoon as I arrived in the very south of the Rhinogydd, with 4 days of supplies on my back and only one objective; to summit the small peak of Y Garn, who currently had his head in the clouds. I trudged along muddy tracks through a woodland valley, before turning west onto open access land. The way was slow, wet and pathless through long grass, with old ruined stone huts dotted about from previous mining activity. One had a lovely tree bursting out of it, filling the space previously taken by the building, reclaiming its place in the hills Up at 300 metres, views of the valley below opened up, looking out over the wide, silty estuary of the Afon Mawddach. It was already starting to get dark, and as I pitched my tent, the air seemed tinged with hazy blues, with layers of mountains fading into the dusky evening After settling into my cosy sleeping bag and having my tea (chilli and rice with bread and butter – a camping fav of mine for the first night of a trip!) the crescent moon shone brightly, sending beams of light down between the surrounding clouds. I’d never witnessed such moonbeams before, and watched them dance along, lighting up the valley below. It was so very pretty. I’d arrived here for a summer trip in August, in the territory of my nemesis Cnicht, with no route plan, a few days of food and a set of both wet clothes and dry clothes. Once again, I wouldn’t end up having a go at Cnicht, as the weather came in and it just didn’t feel ‘right’.. Cnicht and I have a bit of a history you see; previous trips involving an insane tick attack, a wind-busted tent and a dislocated ankle had all created a general feel of foreboding for the area – the curse of Cnicht. But while this trip didn’t go particularly right, nothing went particularly wrong either, so maybe the curse is broken. Maybe we’re slowly warming to each other. This was such a special occurrence for me, I created a dedicated video focused specifically on the aurora..
My last trip of winter! It was the 1st of March and armed with a pretty grim forecast as usual, I expected this to be another godawful-weather-ordeal so I didn’t even plan any kind of route, thinking I would be hunkering down in the forest all weekend. But instead, I was granted cold starry nights, clear skies, silence, snowy mountain views and babbling brooks surrounded by evergreens. Having no planned route to follow, I instinctively wandered in whichever direction I felt most drawn to. I visited mines, paddled in biting water and peered into some giant freaky holes too. I’d not been out for a multi-night for a while and the weather forecast was all over the place. I didn’t know what to expect, but, prepared for everything from sunshine to snow, I sloshed off from the Crimea Pass into the soggy November mountains Moel Siabod watched over me quietly as I picked my way through mud and heather, heading north. I was carrying 18kilos, on the lookout for bogs and shuddering at the thought of falling into one. The day was mild and pleasant, and I stopped to look over a valley. I’d need to cross this valley to get to where I’d hoped to pitch for the night, so I started heading down, soon hearing a chorus of mooing cows. I really don’t like cows. I’ve been chased by a heard of angry horned cows before, and had to throw myself over a barbed wire fence to escape I came through a short stone tunnel and emerged to see the cows wandering all over and around the footpath. Cows on a public right of way – not the best, at least, not for someone who’s afraid of them Usually, I’d find another way around, but I needed to cross this valley. I nervously wombled through, talking to the cows and hoping they didn’t mind my passing, which they didn’t. Thankfully they weren’t bothered by my presence at all, and I soon emerged out from the cow-ridden tracks and started climbing up the other side of the valley It was almost dusk as I found a place to pitch at 310m elevation, a little bit wonky, but flat enough. Moel Siabod stood behind and views of Ysgafell Wen, Moel Druman and Allt-fawr graced the distant skyline; the 20km circular than I was hoping to do would take me along this ridge, but a quick look at the changing forecast gave me an uncomfortable, nagging feeling. Apparently, heavy rain and gale force winds were coming, and I didn’t want to be up there alone, in unfamiliar territory and insane weather, not even knowing if my way would be passable I took off my boots, gaiters and waterproof over-socks to find that my lil merino under-socks were still dry, despite splashing though water and trudging through mud all afternoon. Have I finally cracked it? Figured out how to keep my feet dry? This is promising.. I hate having wet feet, especially so early on in a trip I heard the distant rumbling of a train. The Conwy Valley Line passes underneath these mountains, a 4km long tunnel under the ground – the longest single line railway tunnel in the UK. It was feeling fresh now, about 5°C and Pleiades and the milky way sparkled through passing clouds as I had my tea – a warming, home cooked chicken tikka masala – and settled down for the night. Day 1 My Western Rhinogs Adventure – Day 1 In early July, I arrived in the valley of the Afon Artro with a 3-night, 22km trip planned. It was a beautiful warm day, although I carried the burden of a questionable weather forecast and a heavy tent. The regular forecast was a bit mixed but not too bad, whereas MWIS warned of gale force winds, thunder & lightening and torrential downpours. Prepared for the worst just in case, I was hauling my Hille Soulo, which isn’t something I would usually be doing in summer. I had to offset the weight of it by switching some gear around. I really don’t love the weight of this tent, but I do love the peace of mind in case of bad weather I had to cross a section of head-height ferns to reach my first stop – a gorgeous lil waterfall, just off the beaten track. I donned full waterproofs to keep the ticks of my skin and was absolutely roasting by the time I arrived, so the lil pool felt amazing to rest in and fill up on water Next was the ascent of Foel Ddu – a 477m hill where I was hoping to camp for the first night. As I climbed higher, Tremadoc Bay came into view, the sun glistening over the water and the silhouettes of the peaks on the other side of the bay standing against the summer sky. Scrambling over a drystone wall, I came upon the remains of what looked like a plane crash. A quick web search informed me that this was the wreckage of an RAF plane, which came down on Foel Ddu in 1945, sadly taking the lives of all 7 men on board; David Henry Robert Evans Maxwell Walter Moon George Edward William Hodge Charles William Souden Alfred Ernest Oliff Harold Nielsen Arthur David Gash Rest in Peace The views from high on Foel Ddu were quite something, the sea to the west, and the Rhinogs to the east. I pitched at 440m, just down from the summit and out of the worst of the wind, although it was still fairly gusty, and I was glad that I’d carried the sturdy-but-heavy tent. Loving the solitude (I’d not seen another person since parking up in the valley) but unsure of what tomorrow would bring, I settled down for a noisy night of broken sleep as the wind whipped about my lil tent Gear List
