It was early March, and I had arrived toward the western border of Eryri, for my last trip of winter. It was pleasantly mild for the time of year, 14°C.. my perfect hiking temperature! I had 4 days of food with me, my supplies and home on my back, and a thirst for adventure  Day 1 I was on my way to a wide valley surrounded by low peaks, but first I would have to travel across some boggy ground. Still squelchy everywhere from winter wetness, the going was slow, not helped by a gate that I needed to use being in disrepair, and having big ‘ol rusty nails sticking out of it. After straddling the adjoining fence with my huge rucksack on and nearly getting stuck, I eventually I made it on to a track, which was easy going in parts, and in other parts completely flooded and full of lovely frogs After passing a majestic sheep, perched on top of his hay bales and looking like a king with his loyal subjects surrounding him on the ground below, the track led me into the valley, and across a ford, which I stumbled across and gave my nice dry right foot a refreshing dunk into. And then I reached the lake – Llyn Hesgyn. From my position on the track, the area surrounding the lake looked boggy, so I decided to head up the hill next to me to the east, and find a pitch there for my first night The weather was turning. The temperature was dropping and there was light rain in the air. I put on my rain coat and starting trudging upward, following a sunken drystone wall all the way to my first lil summit. I’m not sure what this one is called; my maps says both ‘Craig yr Hafod’ and ‘Cyfiau’, although I’ve no idea if those are just the names of the westerly and easterly slopes, respectively Up by the 534m summit there was a perfect, grassy lil clearing for my tent. From here I could see the peaks on the other side of the valley, where I’d be headed tomorrow. But for now, I just wanted to pitch my tent, get cosy and have my dinner. This first night was uneventful and dark, the clouds blocking any views of the night sky, and I warmed up my tea – a homecooked chicken curry and settled down for the night Click on 'read more' below to continue the adventure.. This time without using camo netting, but instead a 3x3m camo tarp folded into a low-envelope-style config but propped up at only one end with my trekking poles. I used leaves to blend the bottom lines of the tarp into the ground, and evergreen boughs pinched from a fallen tree to disguise the top and side lines - hooked into the tarp tie-out points to hold them in place I’m so pleased with how this turned out! If I didn’t know it was there, I would never notice it, and I had a lovely, freezing night out in the woods, totally hidden. I listened to the crows, caught some questionable footage of what I assume was a fox on my trail cam, although I think it looked more like a hyena. Not sure we have those here though so The shelter was just the right height to be low-profile while providing plenty of room to snug and be cosy without feeling claustrophobic but while retaining a few degrees of heat (although it wasn’t high enough to sit up in). I had a gorgeous sleep under a bright moon, and woke to find the shelter still looking very stealthy by the morning. There was some slight slippage of the leaves due to the tarp being a smoother surface than camo netting, but for the most part it was all still in place – one of my stealthiest I reckon! I’m really loving the camo tarp! (Or basha, if you prefer). I think it’s my favourite now, preferable to the solid-colour ones for me in most instances Gear List

I love this configuration as it creates the walls, the door and a floor, all from one tarp! The last time I tried this was with a 3.5x3.5m tarp, hung from a tree (see that one here), and it was pretty perfect. But I wanted to see if it could be done with a trekking pole. So, armed with a smaller and lighter 3x3m tarp and a new, slightly longer trekking pole, I gave it a shot My initial thoughts were that it looked a bit shoddy. I do like the look of a nice taught tarp with clean lines, but my trekking pole, even over-extended, still wasn’t quite long enough to give it the height required for that. However, looking past the slight sagworthiness, it was still a great shelter.. Just big enough inside to take my sleep system, so you wouldn’t want to go any smaller than 3x3 with your tarp. Fully enclosed to retain a bit of body heat on a cold night and protect from rain, and that awesome ability to perform a little tarpology, and open it up into an ideal, open shelter for cooking and chilling at camp, before folding it down enclosed again for bed I cooked chonky lamb steaks on my firebox and hung out with crows and tawny owls Only 2 weeks til Spring officially starts, how exciting! A night in a busted tent! On two occasions now my tent poles have snapped in wind, both times though (see those here and here), I was only a few kilometres from my car and able to bail. But it got me wondering, what happens if I’m on a multi-night adventure, it’s getting dark, my poles snap and I’m too far away to walk out? (Assuming I don’t have anything to attempt a pole fix with me either, which I often don’t, but I feel like that needs to change and have now ordered a pole repair splint) For this attempt I used my MSR Hubba NX, a neat lil tent but one of the ones that has broken in wind for me in the past. The poles have since been fixed, so I just undid a couple of sections to recreate how it looked when it actually broke. After removing my ‘broken’ poles, I first had a go using my trekking pole to prop it up. This worked so well! I was even able to attach the mesh inner back to the outer using a couple of carabiners that I keep on my rucksack (so handy!) and I had fashioned a sturdy, functional shelter But I felt like this was too easy, and considered that many people don’t carry trekking poles anyway. So I decided to try it without, reducing the tent to a floppy, collapsed shelter, but, still a shelter none-the-less. The night was cool and breezy, dropping down to 1ºC. I had no phone reception but the 60km/ph winds that were forecast on my Garmin did not come to be. It was actually a beautiful night, spent wrapped in the tent with my head poking out, waking up to the sound of a creature walking about (a mountain goat maybe), to find that the clouds had cleared and I was under a sky full of bright, wintery stars Light rain started to fall in the morning, but it was no bother. I’d pull the tent fabric over my head to shelter, and pop out again whenever it stopped. The most inconvenient thing about it all was the tent fabric flapping around in my face while I had to be inside the tent. Condensation might have been an issue if my sleeping bag weren’t protected by my bivi bag, but as it was it just felt a bit damp in there, more of a mild discomfort than a problem All-in-all, a pretty easy first attempt at a night in a busted tent, but I think it might get a bit interesting in worse weather haha, so I’ll try this again in less forgiving conditions and report back. But experimenting with this reassures me that if my tent did indeed get busted up when I was too far out to bail, I’d be absolutely fine. HAPPY SPRING YOU GUYS! It’s finally here. I don’t really enjoy the cramped feel of small shelters like this (Snugpak Ionosphere), but I thought that being such a small space, it might retain heat better than a bigger hiking tent. I was right! During the night I was surprised to find about 5-and-a-half °C of temperature difference between outside and inside the tent. This is similar to what I’ve experienced with my Hille in freezing conditions in the past, so, very impressive This was a totally beautiful night! Big mountain views of an icy Yr Wyddfa, a pastel sunset, and a starry sky including our winter friend Orion, various planets, Pleiades and our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda too. I didn’t sleep very well (the ground wasn’t quite right), but that meant that I got to watch lots of tiny lights climbing the mountain, followed by a frosty, pink sunrise. Shoutout to anyone who night-climbed Snowdon and watched the sun rise from his summit on February 1st, I was watching you! In a non-creepy way haha As excited as I am for spring and to feel a little heat from the sun, this winter has actually been a real treat so far. I’ve had lots of cold, pretty nights out, compared to last winter which was mild and wet as hell. Apologies to the bad-weather lovers though, I didn’t get much of it over summer and now winter has been kind to me as well, but rest assured I have plenty of plans for wet & wild antics when I get the weather for it on my free weekends GEAR LIST

It was the day after I’d had a tent break in the wind, and I returned to the same area with a very similar forecast, this time armed with my Hille. Typically, the wind died down and there was no need for such a hardcore tent, but I was unexpectedly treated to one of the most beautiful camps! I pitched on an open, rock-scattered plateau up at 400 metres. The stars came out during the cold night, I slept deeply and I unzipped the tent in the morning to see clouds flowing down the nearby cliffs, billowing out into the open expanse behind me The waves flowed for hours and were absolutely mesmerising. There was a standard slightly ropey mountain forecast but nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn’t expecting it to be a bad-weather-tent-test kinda camp and I thought I was pitching in a nice sheltered spot by a lake backed by majestic cliffs, then the wind changed direction, naturally The tent poles were bending inwards, two of the pole sections kept pulling apart and then the crossbar snapped. I didn’t manage to get the tent up fully so I can’t say how it would have fared if I’d finished with it, but I just don’t trust lightweight pole tents in our unhinged UK weather This tent has performed very well in more sheltered conditions (see that video here), it has innovative design features and is a great tent. I just don't think that lightweight and 'stormworthy' are qualities that can be found together in pole tents. In my experience, you choose one or the other GEAR LIST

Who’s That – Ty Simon In Other News – Sam River Sleepless – Notize Nocturne Op9 No2 – Aviva H All from Artlist with license A snowy night in my new (old) car, meet Rover! Rover is a Land Rover Freelander 2 just like Landy, but he’s a bit younger, currently 13 years old. Similar to Landy he also already had over 100k on the clock when I bought him, but I’m hoping he’ll do me a few years For my bed I’m using a slab of upholstery foam cut to size, a single sheet, pillows & duvet. This whole bed folds up to fit neatly into the boot. I’m also in a sleeping bag for this one because it was cold, and cars can get pretty chilly in the winter. This was a lovely experience in the snow, my coldest car sleep yet but I was nice and toasty in there with my hand warmer on the go! I use window guards to stop rain (or in this case snow) coming in the windows, while allowing me ventilation throughout the night, and I have lil car window nets for privacy Rover is really cosy and I reckon he’ll be a perfect lil retreat for those camps-gone-wrong that I have to bail. I like to keep my car stocked with dry clothes, hand warmers, shovel, towel, head torch, med kit and snacks This ended up being a shorter trip than I’d anticipated due to the road conditions and my fear of sliding off the road and down a cliff, but I managed a quick and bitterly cold stop off at the high pass of Bwlch y Groes before the snow came in, looking out over the icy Arans. It was a mildly rainy and windy evening for this one. I was pitched in a nice sheltered spot, but the wind did change direction overnight, letting me test out the option to add trekking poles to support the tent poles. The tent did really well in this (fairly tame) British weather, although I had my doubts about the strength of the thin & lightweight poles, especially with the tent being described on the website as having ‘unprecedented stormworthiness’ Unfortunately, I’ve since taken this tent out to the mountains on a standard breezy mountain day, but then the wind suddenly changed direction, sending crazy winds down a cliff in the direction of my chosen pitch. The crossbar snapped, right after I’d managed to get the first trekking pole in place for support. The poles were bending inward considerably in the wind and also came undone on one side where the wind had pulled them apart Having said that, I do think this is a great tent for fair weather camping, or mild-moderate weather sheltered camping. It is HUGE inside, the head room is great, the colour is great. It’s so light at under 1 kilo – amazing for a double wall shelter. The option to pull back part of the fly, or remove it entirely is fantastic and means you can customise the tent according to conditions on the day and reduce condensation in fair weather. It also pitches all-in-one go, which is great in rain, or just as a mesh inner which is great for a warm summer evening. It did not leak and doesn’t require seam sealing – hurray! I really like it! I just don’t think ‘stormworthy’ is an appropriate description. Especially not for our unhinged UK weather I’ve informed Durston customer service of the issues I had in high wind as I know they’re a company that like to take on board customer experiences and get things fine-tuned. It was a cold and snowy November afternoon as I hauled myself with my heavy winter rucksack up to an open shelf in the mountains, up at around 400m elevation and perched above a Welsh mining town The scene was beautiful; everything sparkly white and snow-covered, the sun shining in a still, blue sky, and the Moelwyns sitting pretty in the distance on the other side of the valley. But my gut told me that this was not a place to stay. This peace and prettiness was deceptive; it was the calm before the storm. A text pinged through from Ash, letting me know that the oncoming storm had been given a name, and to be careful I pondered that when the weather came in up here, surrounded by all this snow and ice, I might find myself in blizzard conditions. The snow hid the ground below it, leaving me unable to tell what I was walking on, or what I would be pitching on. There were small, partially frozen lakes dotted around, and ruined mining buildings. I decided to head back down the mountain. Overnight, the temperature was due to rise. The snow would melt. I’d spend tonight in my car, and head out the next day I drove round to one of my favourite laybys on a quiet, single-track road, made my tea and settled down in my cosy car bed click on 'read more' below to continue the story..
