Trying a bit of mesh tent & tarp camping! I decided to use just the mesh inner from my claustrophobic & fairly awkward lil Snugpak Ionosphere for this, leaving the outer fly at home and instead pairing it with a lightweight tarp overhead This turned out to be a perfect combination :D the mesh tent kept the hoards of spiders off me while I slept, so I didn’t need to use a head bug net for a change. And the open tarp formation above, propped up with my trekking poles and sticks, allowed me to see all around me and really feel like I was outside, while still being protected from any rain I had such a beautiful autumn night out! I cooked the most delicious chicken and chorizo baps, slept soundly in the fresh woodland air, and found an amazing skull (which I thought was a badger, but according to my very knowledgeable viewers, is actually a fox!). Boris the Fox has now joined the Dead Gang in my living room, along with my deer, sheep and mountain goat skulls. Very pleased to add a fox to the collection. He has some mean ol’ teeth! This was one of my favourite set-ups, being so open but protected. I’m not sure that it would hold up well in wind, but it was great for a sheltered woodland camp. Gear List

The Day I’m in Love – Anthony Lazaro Waltz for the Dawn – Aren Park I Want To – Livingrooms Losing Streak – Paper Planes Leaves – Roy Dahan Celestial Rhythms – Ariel Dahan All from Artlist with license A Stealthy Den against a Fallen Tree 🍂 Armed with a small tarp, some pegs, cordage, camo netting and a trekking pole, I headed out into the foggy woods to create some kind of shelter against a big fallen tree It wasn’t perfect or invisible, but it was pretty low-key and I had the best time sheltering out of the light rain, watching leaves fall from the trees and spotting deer. I saw two bucks with their majestic antlers, one was a beautiful white boy, which I’d never seen before! And had a cosy night in my autumn nook Typically, this lil woodland has no people wandering around in it, no road noise, but it turns out, it’s right under a flight path instead (there’s always something haha!) So, it’s back to the drawing board with finding a quiet local place to camp. I’m gonna find somewhere one day I just know it! 😬🤞 Gear List

Well, sort of. The poncho becomes the fly, and the arm holes become the vents. You can use it like this, just as it is, like a lil tarp-type open shelter. Or, you can stick the matching mesh tent underneath it to create a bug-proof tent thing. It all seems pretty damn cool, and it’s a fun concept. But I still can’t get my head around these poncho shelters. First off, you still need to wear a rain coat, for two reasons. The sleeves are far too short to keep your arms dry. And then there’s that familiar poncho-shelter-problem.. if it’s raining, you’re going to get wet when you have to take off the poncho to erect it as a shelter. So, you end up just wearing it over your raincoat, which in my opinion defeats the object of it being a multi-purpose piece of gear. Pitching this inner first would be a bad idea in rain, as it would just fill up with water. So, I tried to pitch it fly-first, which I found a bit faffy. But it was my first time and I guess I’d be better at it now that I know how it all works I felt so cosy in this with my lil lantern glowing, enjoying a tasty home cooked chicken tikka masala and listening to the owls and the crows. I tried a mini hot water bottle for this camp, which I found to be a less effective method for warming myself than my electronic hand warmers. The lil hot water bottle only stayed warm 2-3 hours, compared to my handwarmer which chucks out heat all night long. The handwarmer, although I consider it heavy, is considerably lighter than a hot water bottle plus the extra water I had to carry in to fill it with I settled down for the night, and slept so soundly that I didn’t wake up at all as the rain started coming through the front mesh. By morning the floor was soggy, and my pillow was damp. Not really an issue as I always use a bivi bag, but could become a bit of an annoyance, particularly if you are to be out for more than one night. There's also no vestibule, so everything has to be in the 1-person sleeping space with you, or else shoved under the fly All that being said, I loved camping with this. I loved the colour and how discrete it was. I loved the ‘feel’ of it.. it felt woodlandly and lovely. Not the most technical terms, but you know what I mean, it felt nice and I felt at home in it. I’ve come to realise that I am such a lover of going unnoticed, that I prefer to camp in a stealthy shelter that lets a bit of water in, than a noticeable shelter that stays totally dry inside This seems to be well made too, with taped seams, to stop the rain from leaking through the roof (while it comes straight in through the front mesh instead haha!) I do think the poncho fly would make an excellent emergency or lunch shelter for summer hiking though. And, apparently you can join two of these ponchos together, to create a tipi tent! Walking into the woods wearing two ponchos just sounds too wonderfully ridiculous, so I’ll definitely be trying that at some point Gear List

I got this as I love my lightweight Lanshans, but they have caused me some bother.. namely, being pretty rubbish in bad weather But this tent claims to be both light and 'stormworthy'.. a bold claim indeed, but amazing if it actually is. The geometery-based design is quite unique, making it far studier than you'd expect - you don't even need to use guy lines. The biggest downside for me is the colour.. I feel obvious and noticeable in it, which is a shame, as I much prefer to blend in. This first look was a cold, fair weather autumn camp. There was an unnerving experience in the middle when, due to unknowingly pitching close to a tiny path which was hidden by fallen leaves, a person strolled behind my tent at dusk, and then decided to lurk around a while, hanging around and investigating my camp from a distance. As soon as he left I chucked my stuff back into my rucksack and got the hell outta there, walking by the light of the moon to an old trusty spot (which was really hard to find in the dark haha), where I've never been seen before and I felt safe. Give me weird nature noises and spooky tales any day, but other people are my worst fear in the woods. Day 1 | Distance travelled: 5km | Weather: mild & pleasant I arrived in the Moelwyns to a bright afternoon with a few butterflies in my tummy.. I’d not been out for a multi-night for a while and the weather forecast was all over the place. I didn’t know what to expect, but, prepared for everything from sunshine to snow, I sloshed off from the Crimea Pass into the soggy November mountains Moel Siabod watched over me quietly as I picked my way through mud and heather, heading north. I was carrying 18kilos, on the lookout for bogs and shuddering at the thought of falling into one. The day was mild and pleasant, and I stopped to look over a valley. I’d need to cross this valley to get to where I’d hoped to pitch for the night, so I started heading down, soon hearing a chorus of mooing cows. I really don’t like cows. I’ve been chased by a heard of angry horned cows before, and had to throw myself over a barbed wire fence to escape I came through a short stone tunnel and emerged to see the cows wandering all over and around the footpath. Cows on a public right of way – not the best, at least, not for someone who’s afraid of them Usually, I’d find another way around, but I needed to cross this valley. I nervously wombled through, talking to the cows and hoping they didn’t mind my passing, which they didn’t. Thankfully they weren’t bothered by my presence at all, and I soon emerged out from the cow-ridden tracks and started climbing up the other side of the valley It was almost dusk as I found a place to pitch at 310m elevation, a little bit wonky, but flat enough. Moel Siabod stood behind and views of Ysgafell Wen, Moel Druman and Allt-fawr graced the distant skyline; the 20km circular than I was hoping to do would take me along this ridge, but a quick look at the changing forecast gave me an uncomfortable, nagging feeling. Apparently, heavy rain and gale force winds were coming, and I didn’t want to be up there alone, in unfamiliar territory and insane weather, not even knowing if my way would be passable I took off my boots, gaiters and waterproof over-socks to find that my lil merino under-socks were still dry, despite splashing though water and trudging through mud all afternoon. Have I finally cracked it? Figured out how to keep my feet dry? This is promising.. I hate having wet feet, especially so early on in a trip I heard the distant rumbling of a train. The Conwy Valley Line passes underneath these mountains, a 4km long tunnel under the ground – the longest single line railway tunnel in the UK. It was feeling fresh now, about 5°C and Pleiades and the milky way sparkled through passing clouds as I had my tea – a warming, home cooked chicken tikka masala – and settled down for the night. I looked over my map for hours, trying to decide what to do to no avail, and fell into a restless, wondering sleep GEar List

A Fully Enclosed Tarp Set-Up! One of the coolest configurations that I’ve tried so far - so simple, yet practical and versatile too I used my 3.5x3.5m multicam tarp for this, and attached it to a tree, although you could also use a ridgeline. Arranged in this fashion, using a few pegs and cordage, this fully-enclosed set-up provides 3 walls, a full-coverage floor, a door and complete rain protection. I was also able to temporarily open up one side so that I could do some sheltered fire-cooking in the rain (sirloin steak on my firebox – so good!) The headroom is insane in this, loads of space inside too, I think it’s just amazing – a new fav of mine. Not a drop of water came in, despite it raining most of the night. Amos Ever Hadani – Convolution Gvidon – Paradise Beach Ikoliks – Daydream Muted – Under a Blanket All from Artlist with license ​ I ended up bailing on this autumn camp, but it was so freakin' beautiful regardless I set up my superlight tarp in the forest- a plow point from a tree, nestled among moss-covered rocks. I loved this lil set-up so much.. I felt so cosy as the rain came down and I settled in my sleeping bag and had my tea. But just as it had gotten dark, I suddenly saw lights moving through the forest. I turned my lights off and waited for them to pass, but they stayed. The lights moved around in one general area, occasionally flashing in my direction, the light passing over my camp. Realistically, they wouldn’t have been able to see me with my lights off from that distance, but they probably already saw my lights earlier and might be wondering if I was still there I waited around for an hour and felt more and more on edge, just sitting in the dark. I would never have been able to sleep now, so I decided to leave. I managed to pack up my entire camp in the pitch back by feel alone, only using dim light when I was ready to leave, to check I hadn’t left anything behind. By now there was a fire blazing along with the lights, but, it was kinda cool to find that I know my gear so well that I can pack away blindly On my womble down through the trees, it was hard to make out the rough paths in the dark, the stars shone through the canopy and there were more lights, in different places. I’m not travelling far from my car at the moment due to my poorly ankle, so I guess I’m more likely to run into others. I kinda take it for granted that I’m alone out there, and it made me nervous to find out that I wasn’t Back at the car, I drove to a quiet layby nearby, made a hot drink and arranged my car bed. Now out in the open, the heavenly display above Landy was absolutely stunning – one of the most beautiful night skies that I’ve ever seen. I slept soundly and deeply for 8 hours and woke to the sun peeping through the autumn foliage before driving home, well rested and, in retrospect, loving my little misadventure. Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan, but that’s ok. I may have hated realising that I wasn’t alone, fearful avenues that my mind goes down when it conjures up the possible dark consequences of running into possibly dark humans alone at night. But as always, once I wake, alive and well I am full of gratitude for it all – I loved so many things about this lil trip Gear List

First you notice that it pitches inner first, which wasn’t an issue for this camp as it wasn’t raining when I pitched the tent. But pitching an inner first tent in rain is always a bit dodgy as the inner can fill up with water The tent was easy to set up and I soon had all my gear inside, and my happy helper Frank to assist. Snugpak call this a one-person shelter, which will take 2 in an emergency. As you can see, it takes 2 people, but it’s a bit romantic. You’ll never get 2 mats in it, but it could provide shelter for 2 in a life-threatening situation I found camping with this tent a bit annoying. There’s no vestibule of course, so no shelter for cooking, or to store your rucksack or boots (which I kept between the inner and the fly). You can’t sit up in it unless you sit in the doorway with the door open, which obviously isn’t an option in rain. And when you are confined inside because of rain, it’s cramped as hell. My usually neatly arranged possessions were all over the place and I ended up with a sore neck from all the contorting in the tiny space But, to sleep in, it was just fine. It makes a great stealth shelter being only 75cm high, and for once, there were no leaky seams. Not even any condensation due to the wind. I measured gusts of up to 37km/hr but had no concerns in this lil bad boy, as it’s so low profile with a small surface area, this kinda wind was no issue for it at all. It kept me safe and dry, and I found it to be very good at being what it is ~ a very tiny tent. If you like that kinda thing The stars shone between rain showers and I woke to the most beautiful sunny morning in the mountains, a real treat after the cramped rainy night Gear List
