My first mountain night out with the Durston X-Dome didn’t go very well haha! There was a standard slightly ropey mountain forecast but nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn’t expecting it to be a bad-weather-tent-test kinda camp and I thought I was pitching in a nice sheltered spot by a lake backed by majestic cliffs, then the wind changed direction, naturally The tent poles were bending inwards, two of the pole sections kept pulling apart and then the crossbar snapped. I didn’t manage to get the tent up fully so I can’t say how it would have fared if I’d finished with it, but I just don’t trust lightweight pole tents in our unhinged UK weather This tent has performed very well in more sheltered conditions (see that video here), it has innovative design features and is a great tent. I just don't think that lightweight and 'stormworthy' are qualities that can be found together in pole tents. In my experience, you choose one or the other GEAR LIST

It was a mildly rainy and windy evening for this one. I was pitched in a nice sheltered spot, but the wind did change direction overnight, letting me test out the option to add trekking poles to support the tent poles. The tent did really well in this (fairly tame) British weather, although I had my doubts about the strength of the thin & lightweight poles, especially with the tent being described on the website as having ‘unprecedented stormworthiness’ Unfortunately, I’ve since taken this tent out to the mountains on a standard breezy mountain day, but then the wind suddenly changed direction, sending crazy winds down a cliff in the direction of my chosen pitch. The crossbar snapped, right after I’d managed to get the first trekking pole in place for support. The poles were bending inward considerably in the wind and also came undone on one side where the wind had pulled them apart Having said that, I do think this is a great tent for fair weather camping, or mild-moderate weather sheltered camping. It is HUGE inside, the head room is great, the colour is great. It’s so light at under 1 kilo – amazing for a double wall shelter. The option to pull back part of the fly, or remove it entirely is fantastic and means you can customise the tent according to conditions on the day and reduce condensation in fair weather. It also pitches all-in-one go, which is great in rain, or just as a mesh inner which is great for a warm summer evening. It did not leak and doesn’t require seam sealing – hurray! I really like it! I just don’t think ‘stormworthy’ is an appropriate description. Especially not for our unhinged UK weather I’ve informed Durston customer service of the issues I had in high wind as I know they’re a company that like to take on board customer experiences and get things fine-tuned. Prices October 2024 when purchased - they may have since changed, and do not include import or customs fees from Canada to UK which were as follows in December 2024; Import VAT £91.25 Customs duty £48.88 Handling fee £8.00 TOTAL £148.13 just to send the tent to the UK DAY 1 I arrived in Eryri prepared for interesting weather, but not knowing that the bad weather system due to come in had actually been named – Storm Bert was approaching. It was a cold and snowy November afternoon as I hauled myself with my heavy winter rucksack up to an open shelf in the mountains, up at around 400m elevation and perched above a Welsh mining town The scene was beautiful; everything sparkly white and snow-covered, the sun shining in a still, blue sky, and the Moelwyns sitting pretty in the distance on the other side of the valley. But my gut told me that this was not a place to stay. This peace and prettiness was deceptive; it was the calm before the storm. A text pinged through from Ash, letting me know that the oncoming storm had been given a name, and to be careful I pondered that when the weather came in up here, surrounded by all this snow and ice, I might find myself in blizzard conditions. The snow hid the ground below it, leaving me unable to tell what I was walking on, or what I would be pitching on. There were small, partially frozen lakes dotted around, and ruined mining buildings. I decided to head back down the mountain. Overnight, the temperature was due to rise. The snow would melt. I’d spend tonight in my car, and head out the next day I drove round to one of my favourite laybys on a quiet, single-track road, made my tea and settled down in my cosy car bed click on 'read more' below to continue the story.. This one was so gorgeous A few days of peace & freedom in the Rhinogydd, full of moonbeams, autumn colours, beautiful views, wind, rain, mud, and adventure.. Day 1 – distance walked 4.1km It was a still and pleasant Autumn afternoon as I arrived in the very south of the Rhinogydd, with 4 days of supplies on my back and only one objective; to summit the small peak of Y Garn, who currently had his head in the clouds. I trudged along muddy tracks through a woodland valley, before turning west onto open access land. The way was slow, wet and pathless through long grass, with old ruined stone huts dotted about from previous mining activity. One had a lovely tree bursting out of it, filling the space previously taken by the building, reclaiming its place in the hills Up at 300 metres, views of the valley below opened up, looking out over the wide, silty estuary of the Afon Mawddach. It was already starting to get dark, and as I pitched my tent, the air seemed tinged with hazy blues, with layers of mountains fading into the dusky evening After settling into my cosy sleeping bag and having my tea (chilli and rice with bread and butter – a camping fav of mine for the first night of a trip!) the crescent moon shone brightly, sending beams of light down between the surrounding clouds. I’d never witnessed such moonbeams before, and watched them dance along, lighting up the valley below. It was so very pretty. This turned out to be an absolutely beautiful night. It was chilly, with temperatures hovering just above freezing, and actually dipping a little below in the early hours. After the sun set, there was a bright moon, and after the moon had sunk below the horizon, the milky way could be seen hanging above my tent, along with pastel hues of pink and green from a very faint aurora As for the tent.. I’m perpetually looking for the ideal tent for my multi-night trips. This time I was trying ‘The One’ by Gossamer Gear. This is a one-person, single skin, sil nylon shelter. Functionality and performance wise, my favourite lightweight trekking pole tent in my DCF Durston Xmid Pro1.. but I just can’t get on board with how blue and un-stealthy it is. I love the look amd feel of my Lanshan Pro 1, but it repeatedly requires seam sealing, and isn’t overly reliable. So I figured this one might be a happy compromise between the two. This is what I was hoping for;
It’s definitely light, at 630g all in. The colour.. it’s not exactly what I was hoping for. The listing showed a grey tent, which would be perfect as it would just look like a rock, but in reality, it seemed to me to be more of a greeny blue. But, the colour seems to change depending on weather conditions, and in dull cloudy weather I was pretty happy with it. And the seams are factory sealed, which is amazing as I can’t stand seam sealing myself. So, this one should be waterproof straight out of the bag, hurray It was also easy to set up – just peg in the four corners and stick the trekking poles in. There’s just the one door, with the back having a large mesh ventilation panel under a lip to keep the rain out. Being single skin, condensation will always be a consideration. As with all single skin tents, a bivi bag to cover the sleeping bag and something to mop up the walls of the tent are essential. Room inside was adequate for my sleep system and gear, and the vestibule is pretty large. Headroom is great. There’s also a built in ‘washing line’ in the vestibule (handy!), which doubles as a guy line that you can use to furl up the vestibule – a great option for cooking in the rain. There’s also side-wall tie out points, which give extra space inside and add stability to the shelter The floor is thin (the entire tent is composed of 10D ripstop silnylon) so I popped a lightweight ground sheet underneath for a little extra protection. In the morning, the weather started to come in. The lil tent took the rain just fine, I didn’t notice any leaking at all and it took gusts of up to 36km/h with no issue. This is pretty standard mountain weather so nothing out of the ordinary, but reassuring none-the-less. Day 1 | Distance travelled: 5km | Weather: mild & pleasant I arrived in the Moelwyns to a bright afternoon with a few butterflies in my tummy.. I’d not been out for a multi-night for a while and the weather forecast was all over the place. I didn’t know what to expect, but, prepared for everything from sunshine to snow, I sloshed off from the Crimea Pass into the soggy November mountains Moel Siabod watched over me quietly as I picked my way through mud and heather, heading north. I was carrying 18kilos, on the lookout for bogs and shuddering at the thought of falling into one. The day was mild and pleasant, and I stopped to look over a valley. I’d need to cross this valley to get to where I’d hoped to pitch for the night, so I started heading down, soon hearing a chorus of mooing cows. I really don’t like cows. I’ve been chased by a heard of angry horned cows before, and had to throw myself over a barbed wire fence to escape I came through a short stone tunnel and emerged to see the cows wandering all over and around the footpath. Cows on a public right of way – not the best, at least, not for someone who’s afraid of them Usually, I’d find another way around, but I needed to cross this valley. I nervously wombled through, talking to the cows and hoping they didn’t mind my passing, which they didn’t. Thankfully they weren’t bothered by my presence at all, and I soon emerged out from the cow-ridden tracks and started climbing up the other side of the valley It was almost dusk as I found a place to pitch at 310m elevation, a little bit wonky, but flat enough. Moel Siabod stood behind and views of Ysgafell Wen, Moel Druman and Allt-fawr graced the distant skyline; the 20km circular than I was hoping to do would take me along this ridge, but a quick look at the changing forecast gave me an uncomfortable, nagging feeling. Apparently, heavy rain and gale force winds were coming, and I didn’t want to be up there alone, in unfamiliar territory and insane weather, not even knowing if my way would be passable I took off my boots, gaiters and waterproof over-socks to find that my lil merino under-socks were still dry, despite splashing though water and trudging through mud all afternoon. Have I finally cracked it? Figured out how to keep my feet dry? This is promising.. I hate having wet feet, especially so early on in a trip I heard the distant rumbling of a train. The Conwy Valley Line passes underneath these mountains, a 4km long tunnel under the ground – the longest single line railway tunnel in the UK. It was feeling fresh now, about 5°C and Pleiades and the milky way sparkled through passing clouds as I had my tea – a warming, home cooked chicken tikka masala – and settled down for the night. Ahh, a night in the wind and rain in a Dinky Lil Tent This is the Snugpak Ionosphere, and I thought it would be fun to try it out in a nice exposed spot and see what it’s made of. First you notice that it pitches inner first, which wasn’t an issue for this camp as it wasn’t raining when I pitched the tent. But pitching an inner first tent in rain is always a bit dodgy as the inner can fill up with water The tent was easy to set up and I soon had all my gear inside, and my happy helper Frank to assist. Snugpak call this a one-person shelter, which will take 2 in an emergency. As you can see, it takes 2 people, but it’s a bit romantic. You’ll never get 2 mats in it, but it could provide shelter for 2 in a life-threatening situation I found camping with this tent a bit annoying. There’s no vestibule of course, so no shelter for cooking, or to store your rucksack or boots (which I kept between the inner and the fly). You can’t sit up in it unless you sit in the doorway with the door open, which obviously isn’t an option in rain. And when you are confined inside because of rain, it’s cramped as hell. My usually neatly arranged possessions were all over the place and I ended up with a sore neck from all the contorting in the tiny space But, to sleep in, it was just fine. It makes a great stealth shelter being only 75cm high, and for once, there were no leaky seams. Not even any condensation due to the wind. I measured gusts of up to 37km/hr but had no concerns in this lil bad boy, as it’s so low profile with a small surface area, this kinda wind was no issue for it at all. It kept me safe and dry, and I found it to be very good at being what it is ~ a very tiny tent. If you like that kinda thing The stars shone between rain showers and I woke to the most beautiful sunny morning in the mountains, a real treat after the cramped rainy night Gear List

Nick Petrov – Indigo Of Water - Firebird FLYIN - Future is Now Moorland Songs - The White Birch Lama House – Wild Lake All from Epidemic Sound & Bensound with license I was so excited to head out in what I assumed was just going to be a standard rainy night, and make a cosy nook under my giant umbrella. This is a 2.2m wide fishing umbrella, but I thought it might make a perfect camping shelter Initial findings were that the plastic D-loop attachment points on the brolly were rubbish, and one of them fell off as soon as I tried the umbrella at home. So, I set about making new attachment points, with metal D-loops and webbing, and sewing them on securely. I replaced the two at the back of the brolly, and the 2 on the flappy side panel bits. And I added x4 new ones across the front of the brolly, in case it needed to be anchored from the front too Now this of course isn’t something you would want to use on a windy night – I’d assume that it would just get smashed to bits, but I figured it would be ok on a fairly still night in sheltered woods. I took a small tarp with me, just in case I needed it I loved setting up my sleep system under the brolly, it felt like being in a cave – nice and sheltered but with gorgeous views out too. However, as the rain started again at night and passing thunderstorms rumbled about, it soon started to leak. Water was coming through all the seams. I chucked my lil tarp over the brolly, which did the trick, but did kind of defeat the object of using the brolly Regardless, I loved this setup. It was one of my favourites. It was heavy to carry in (the brolly alone weighing about 2.6kg, and that’s without the groundsheet and spare tarp that I needed to carry in too. So not overly practical, and I possibly looked a bit of a lunatic walking in with it haha, but there was something about it that I really loved. It was cosy and fun, and it gave me playing-dens-vibes I absolutely loved my first experience of sleeping wild during a thunderstorm. I was camped at low elevation, and the storms were always a few miles away, which is still never entirely safe but considerably safer than being directly under one. I got to relax under my massive brolly and watch the sky light up, and wait for the rumbles while the rain poured. It was just perfection and I feel very lucky to have experienced it Gear List

Matt Large - EZ Target Louna – Change Will Come DaniHaDani – Everlasting Flower DoDa – Ian Post Letra – Circle of Life Bird of Figment – The Wild (all from Epidemic Sound and Artlist with license) I finally got to try out camping under my Poncho tarp in the rain :D This was during 'Storm Antoni', which to be fair amounted to some drizzle and a light breeze. I somehow managed to survive, but getting the poncho erected without getting wet did prove challenging nonetheless I decided to go for a lean-to using my trekking poles, so that I could adjust the height as needed. I was able to get the back corners pegged in while under poncho, but when it came to pegging in the guy lines running off the trekking poles, there was no option other than to get out and get a bit soggy So I'm not sure that a poncho is overly practical as I can't work out a way to get it up without getting wet.. I feel taking additional waterproofs kinda defeats the object I also ended up with a leaky doo-dah (that's the hood bit) so that'll need seem sealing. I feel like hardly anything is water proof these days Anyhow, this was a lovely lil night in the woods. Gear List

Andy Bird – Part of Me Indiebox – Icarus Dream Dan Phillipson - This Is Your Time (all from Bensound with license) I thought I'd try the stone hut with a tarp thing again, but this time with a ridiculously heavy, robust 3x3m polycotton tarp I was pretty confident that this was gonna work out and I'd get that cosy night in the hut that I was hoping for But, it was not to be. This tarp didn't rip in the wind like the last one did, but it did let water through instead. It was a wet night, spent entirely in the bivi bag in an attempt to stay dry, plus no sleep whatsoever.
