Trying a bit of mesh tent & tarp camping! I decided to use just the mesh inner from my claustrophobic & fairly awkward lil Snugpak Ionosphere for this, leaving the outer fly at home and instead pairing it with a lightweight tarp overhead This turned out to be a perfect combination :D the mesh tent kept the hoards of spiders off me while I slept, so I didn’t need to use a head bug net for a change. And the open tarp formation above, propped up with my trekking poles and sticks, allowed me to see all around me and really feel like I was outside, while still being protected from any rain I had such a beautiful autumn night out! I cooked the most delicious chicken and chorizo baps, slept soundly in the fresh woodland air, and found an amazing skull (which I thought was a badger, but according to my very knowledgeable viewers, is actually a fox!). Boris the Fox has now joined the Dead Gang in my living room, along with my deer, sheep and mountain goat skulls. Very pleased to add a fox to the collection. He has some mean ol’ teeth! This was one of my favourite set-ups, being so open but protected. I’m not sure that it would hold up well in wind, but it was great for a sheltered woodland camp. Gear List

The Day I’m in Love – Anthony Lazaro Waltz for the Dawn – Aren Park I Want To – Livingrooms Losing Streak – Paper Planes Leaves – Roy Dahan Celestial Rhythms – Ariel Dahan All from Artlist with license It was a windy day in mid October, and I decided to try camping in an old abandoned mining trench, with a tarp for a roof! At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

A new tarp configuration.. apparently it's a variation on a plough point, but I'm calling this one a forest tent. Isn't it the cutest!
This was super simple to set up - just a case of pegging in the back centre point and then lifting the front with the sticks, tensioning with a guy rope and pegging down the front corners I then got to work cooking a beef curry from scratch, made with sirloin steak, and had a lovely sleep in among the trees, waking to light rain showers pitter-pattering on the tarp I even caught some sweet fallow deer on one of my trail cams too! This is a lovely, simple configuration that provides great coverage, and is nice and sheltered due to the back being tapered down to the ground. The spare flappage at the back gets folded under, creating a covered floor area at the rear. You could also hang the front from a ridgeline instead of using sticks. One of my new favs!

Here's a quick how-to for this config..
Ahh a lovely fully enclosed tarp configuration. This one is called the Pyramid. This is a super-simple set up, although I had some trouble initially, as I found that my trekking pole wasn’t quite long enough to erect it, leaving me with a floppy tarp (never a good thing). This pole claims to be 132cm, but I measure it as 125cm fully extended, and 5cm of that is the spike, which just sinks into this kind of ground. So, I decided instead to suspend it from a ridge line, strung between the adjacent trees. This worked really well, and had the added bonus of no pole getting in the way I thought this arrangement looked so pretty in the fading light, and decided to name her Primrose – Primrose the Pyramid. I found that Primrose’s flaps were quite annoying. This formation would be amazing in bad weather, great protection from the elements, but on a dry evening getting in and out, I just kept getting caught up in the flaps I got the fire going and cooked up some delicious sausage and onion baps before settling down for a lovely sleep in the woods I woke to a chorus of birds, a tawny owl and crows, and sat in the doorway of the tarp, wondering if I could modify it somehow. I played around lifting one side and created a new, much more open configuration, and sat to have breakfast with woodland views. I just love how versatile tarps are! Gear List

Waterfalls – Aves The Street Beat – Ikoliks Hebanera Carmen – Kashido Plan to Win – Dan Phillipson The Felt – Landmark Where We Belong – Helmet Schenker All from Artlist, Bensound and Epidemic Sound I ended up bailing on this autumn camp, but it was so freakin' beautiful regardless I set up my superlight tarp in the forest- a plow point from a tree, nestled among moss-covered rocks. I loved this lil set-up so much.. I felt so cosy as the rain came down and I settled in my sleeping bag and had my tea. But just as it had gotten dark, I suddenly saw lights moving through the forest. I turned my lights off and waited for them to pass, but they stayed. The lights moved around in one general area, occasionally flashing in my direction, the light passing over my camp. Realistically, they wouldn’t have been able to see me with my lights off from that distance, but they probably already saw my lights earlier and might be wondering if I was still there I waited around for an hour and felt more and more on edge, just sitting in the dark. I would never have been able to sleep now, so I decided to leave. I managed to pack up my entire camp in the pitch back by feel alone, only using dim light when I was ready to leave, to check I hadn’t left anything behind. By now there was a fire blazing along with the lights, but, it was kinda cool to find that I know my gear so well that I can pack away blindly On my womble down through the trees, it was hard to make out the rough paths in the dark, the stars shone through the canopy and there were more lights, in different places. I’m not travelling far from my car at the moment due to my poorly ankle, so I guess I’m more likely to run into others. I kinda take it for granted that I’m alone out there, and it made me nervous to find out that I wasn’t Back at the car, I drove to a quiet layby nearby, made a hot drink and arranged my car bed. Now out in the open, the heavenly display above Landy was absolutely stunning – one of the most beautiful night skies that I’ve ever seen. I slept soundly and deeply for 8 hours and woke to the sun peeping through the autumn foliage before driving home, well rested and, in retrospect, loving my little misadventure. Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan, but that’s ok. I may have hated realising that I wasn’t alone, fearful avenues that my mind goes down when it conjures up the possible dark consequences of running into possibly dark humans alone at night. But as always, once I wake, alive and well I am full of gratitude for it all – I loved so many things about this lil trip Gear List

Amos Ever Hadani – Waltz Sentimental DaniHaDani – Change (instrumental) DaniHaDani – Wandering Heart David Morton – An Awakening Julian Cassia – Expansive, Expansive (instrumental) TwinsMusic - Autoreverse All from Artlist & Bensound with license I think this is my stealthiest camp so far! :D I found a lil ditch and fixed a lightweight tarp over a low ridgeline, before blending it into the ground using camo netting, leaves and twigs. If I didn’t make it, I would never have known it was there! This set-up was too low to sit up in, but I was able to slide right underneath it, so it would have given me complete coverage in the rain, if I had needed it I had a lovely night in the woods and went undetected, except for a passing dog, who didn’t see me at first, but when I moved he was startled to see a lunatic hiding in a ditch so he just stood there and barked. I was worried I was gonna get busted but he just backed away back to the path and his owners I used my foam mat for this one, which was a little chilly at night what with it dropping to 10 °C.. I think I prefer to use the foam mat in 14 °C+ Gear List

I really loved using the brown camo netting before to blend in with the ground, so I thought I'd try with green this time to try to blend in above ground with the summer foliage There were paths on both sides, and I managed to not be seen, even when someone strayed off the path and wandered right in front of my camp, although that did feel a bit close for comfort haha This was a hot day, 28°C and there was also a little light rain, which sounded so lovely although it didn't even seem to breach the tree canopy. Thunderstorms were forecast, and I was excited to experience a storm under a tarp, but typically they didn't start until I was driving home I met an angry bug on this camp! He fell out of a tree, seemed kinda shell-shocked, and when he started getting active he launched a piece of wood and pumped himself up to fight. He was big and a bit fluffy. I wasn't sure what he was so had to look it up.. apparently he's a Cockchafer. Which I found highly amusing, had the giggles that day haha! You can also call him a Doddlebug, which sounds much cuter I think. Gear List

I made a cosy nook in this beautiful old boy, ready for a 0°C night in the woods. There were a lot of people around during the daylight hours so I was a little on edge that I may have been seen, but this was a beautiful night nonetheless. I heard a Red Kite (I think), Muntjac, and what may or may not have been an angry badger. I also had fun experimenting with some camo netting for the first time – really liked this! The slate was starting to rip the tarp and when the wind really got going late at night, it got completely destroyed One side of the tarp was ripped off entirely, as was the back corner.
