On the last day of January, I decided to try out my tiny tent for a cold camp. I don’t really enjoy the cramped feel of small shelters like this (Snugpak Ionosphere), but I thought that being such a small space, it might retain heat better than a bigger hiking tent. I was right! During the night I was surprised to find about 5-and-a-half °C of temperature difference between outside and inside the tent. This is similar to what I’ve experienced with my Hille in freezing conditions in the past, so, very impressive This was a totally beautiful night! Big mountain views of an icy Yr Wyddfa, a pastel sunset, and a starry sky including our winter friend Orion, various planets, Pleiades and our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda too. I didn’t sleep very well (the ground wasn’t quite right), but that meant that I got to watch lots of tiny lights climbing the mountain, followed by a frosty, pink sunrise. Shoutout to anyone who night-climbed Snowdon and watched the sun rise from his summit on February 1st, I was watching you! In a non-creepy way haha As excited as I am for spring and to feel a little heat from the sun, this winter has actually been a real treat so far. I’ve had lots of cold, pretty nights out, compared to last winter which was mild and wet as hell. Apologies to the bad-weather lovers though, I didn’t get much of it over summer and now winter has been kind to me as well, but rest assured I have plenty of plans for wet & wild antics when I get the weather for it on my free weekends GEAR LIST

My first mountain night out with the Durston X-Dome didn’t go very well haha! There was a standard slightly ropey mountain forecast but nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn’t expecting it to be a bad-weather-tent-test kinda camp and I thought I was pitching in a nice sheltered spot by a lake backed by majestic cliffs, then the wind changed direction, naturally The tent poles were bending inwards, two of the pole sections kept pulling apart and then the crossbar snapped. I didn’t manage to get the tent up fully so I can’t say how it would have fared if I’d finished with it, but I just don’t trust lightweight pole tents in our unhinged UK weather This tent has performed very well in more sheltered conditions (see that video here), it has innovative design features and is a great tent. I just don't think that lightweight and 'stormworthy' are qualities that can be found together in pole tents. In my experience, you choose one or the other GEAR LIST

It was a mildly rainy and windy evening for this one. I was pitched in a nice sheltered spot, but the wind did change direction overnight, letting me test out the option to add trekking poles to support the tent poles. The tent did really well in this (fairly tame) British weather, although I had my doubts about the strength of the thin & lightweight poles, especially with the tent being described on the website as having ‘unprecedented stormworthiness’ Unfortunately, I’ve since taken this tent out to the mountains on a standard breezy mountain day, but then the wind suddenly changed direction, sending crazy winds down a cliff in the direction of my chosen pitch. The crossbar snapped, right after I’d managed to get the first trekking pole in place for support. The poles were bending inward considerably in the wind and also came undone on one side where the wind had pulled them apart Having said that, I do think this is a great tent for fair weather camping, or mild-moderate weather sheltered camping. It is HUGE inside, the head room is great, the colour is great. It’s so light at under 1 kilo – amazing for a double wall shelter. The option to pull back part of the fly, or remove it entirely is fantastic and means you can customise the tent according to conditions on the day and reduce condensation in fair weather. It also pitches all-in-one go, which is great in rain, or just as a mesh inner which is great for a warm summer evening. It did not leak and doesn’t require seam sealing – hurray! I really like it! I just don’t think ‘stormworthy’ is an appropriate description. Especially not for our unhinged UK weather I’ve informed Durston customer service of the issues I had in high wind as I know they’re a company that like to take on board customer experiences and get things fine-tuned. This turned out to be an absolutely beautiful night. It was chilly, with temperatures hovering just above freezing, and actually dipping a little below in the early hours. After the sun set, there was a bright moon, and after the moon had sunk below the horizon, the milky way could be seen hanging above my tent, along with pastel hues of pink and green from a very faint aurora As for the tent.. I’m perpetually looking for the ideal tent for my multi-night trips. This time I was trying ‘The One’ by Gossamer Gear. This is a one-person, single skin, sil nylon shelter. Functionality and performance wise, my favourite lightweight trekking pole tent in my DCF Durston Xmid Pro1.. but I just can’t get on board with how blue and un-stealthy it is. I love the look amd feel of my Lanshan Pro 1, but it repeatedly requires seam sealing, and isn’t overly reliable. So I figured this one might be a happy compromise between the two. This is what I was hoping for;
It’s definitely light, at 630g all in. The colour.. it’s not exactly what I was hoping for. The listing showed a grey tent, which would be perfect as it would just look like a rock, but in reality, it seemed to me to be more of a greeny blue. But, the colour seems to change depending on weather conditions, and in dull cloudy weather I was pretty happy with it. And the seams are factory sealed, which is amazing as I can’t stand seam sealing myself. So, this one should be waterproof straight out of the bag, hurray It was also easy to set up – just peg in the four corners and stick the trekking poles in. There’s just the one door, with the back having a large mesh ventilation panel under a lip to keep the rain out. Being single skin, condensation will always be a consideration. As with all single skin tents, a bivi bag to cover the sleeping bag and something to mop up the walls of the tent are essential. Room inside was adequate for my sleep system and gear, and the vestibule is pretty large. Headroom is great. There’s also a built in ‘washing line’ in the vestibule (handy!), which doubles as a guy line that you can use to furl up the vestibule – a great option for cooking in the rain. There’s also side-wall tie out points, which give extra space inside and add stability to the shelter The floor is thin (the entire tent is composed of 10D ripstop silnylon) so I popped a lightweight ground sheet underneath for a little extra protection. In the morning, the weather started to come in. The lil tent took the rain just fine, I didn’t notice any leaking at all and it took gusts of up to 36km/h with no issue. This is pretty standard mountain weather so nothing out of the ordinary, but reassuring none-the-less. I’ll try to get it out in some slightly more demonic weather at some point to see how it fares Gear List

Continuing my mission to find stealthy ways to camp in the woods, this time I tried a second-hand British Military Bivi! This bivi is 1.7 kilos, not light by any means compared to a simple bivi bag, but I thought this might provide a nice, stealthy lil nook for me to spend the night, and I was right! The camo was amazing – it blends so well into the surroundings without the need for my usual camo netting and chucking leaves & twigs all over the place. It was also roomier than I’d anticipated, allowing me to store some bits ‘n bobs and lots of room for me inside my floofy winter bag (the forecast had predicted a chilly 3°C night – pretty cool for September). It’s also super low-profile, so it just disappears behind long grass I had a perfect night out with this! There was a brief rain shower, and I’m glad it was brief as I’ve no idea if the bivi is even waterproof. Deer wandered close to camp with no idea that I was there, one even walking right behind me while I was sleeping. Stars twinkled between the leaves of the big tree that I was settled under, and I woke to a fresh, sunny morning after at least 8 hours of sleep You know when it all just feels so right? It was one of those :) However, I do think it would have been very different if the rain had come in. Being confined inside a zipped-up bivi in bad weather seems to me like a claustrophobic, condensation-ridden hell hole. But I’ll update you on that when I try it haha The end of the pole at the head end also kept popping out, but it wasn’t too much bother And HAPPY AUTUMN! The colours are starting to turn. The nights are getting longer.. I’m so content. Maybe I’m part bat or something but I do love this cosy descent into darkness and cold Gear List

I wanted to think this is really cool but I just can’t get my head around the fact that you still need to bring a raincoat, in addition to your ponchos, because you have to take the ponchos off to erect them as a shelter.. seems a bit pointless really But with that inconvenient issue aside, the two ponchos joined together really easily via zips and velcro. It was a bit faffy getting the shelter up and getting the mesh inner installed but I got there in the end, and got to enjoy a nice lil nook out of the rain with a mesh-enclosed bedroom area Another issue is that it looks like you can only install one mesh inner under the 2 ponchos, so one of you would be out with the bugs in the vestibule area.. although I think I preferred the space inside without the mesh inner installed – a head bug net would suffice to keep the bugs off the important parts I whipped up a delicious pork chow mein for my tea and spent a lovely rainy night in the woods Thank you to Frank for being the second poncho wearer and keeping me company Ps. On a chilly evening in July, I headed out to the mountains with Frank to try out another survival shelter – this time it was the Lifesystems 2. I had just my day hiking stuff, so no sleeping bag etc, to see how I’d do with this shelter had I become lost or injured and had to unexpectedly spend a night in the hills Having never had it out before, I was surprised how small it was, especially for a 2-person shelter. However, we both fit in ok squished up (although I have to say, if Frank were bigger and had his own rucksack, this would have been quite a challenge haha!) However, due to the small size and sturdy construction, this thing held in an unbelievable amount of heat. I tested the inside/outside temperatures twice, and both times got a difference of 6 to 7°C, which I think is the biggest temperature difference I’ve ever recorded so far This is a well-made shelter, which is not prone to ripping or tearing unlike the last survival shelter I tried, but it remains light enough to chuck in a day bag at 345g. Frank and I got to try it out in the rain, got eaten alive by midges and had a pretty cosy (ok, cramped) night in this lil thing. Condensation will always be an issue of course, so you’ll still need waterproofs, and no sleep was had due to the uncomfortable conditions, but it kept me perfectly warm with no sleeping bag (very rare for a coldy like me!) and could have saved my life in an actual emergency There’s a window, an air vent, reflective strips, and 2 lil bum-seat areas so that you don’t have to park your rear directly onto wet ground (yay). The bright orange colour is great for attracting attention from bugs mountain rescue. It’s also real simple, not requiring any hanging-from-trees or creating ridgelines; you simply put it over your head and wait out the weather. I imagine it would also be handy for sandwich stops on wet days. It’s deffo my new fav shelter to carry in my day hiking bag I was pretty close to my car for this in case it went wrong – not a good idea to do silly stuff in the mountains without a solid back up plan :) Gear List

I took my DCF tent out for a trial run in the rain and did some chaotic but delicious cooking! It was late April and plenty of rain was forecast, so I took myself out to the woods to have a soggy night out in the Xmid Pro1, just to check it was all sound really before taking it on a longer adventure As it got dark, I started cooking my tea – chicken tikka masala baps. You’d think this would be quite simple really, but I somehow managed to smoke myself out. The food was absolutely delicious though! One of my favourite woodland meals so far (I know I always say that) As I settled down to eat my creation, rain started to fall, just lightly. But it continued all through the night, getting heavier and giving the woods a good drenching. I’d actually never seen these woods so full of water, there are no streams here usually but, on this morning, they had popped up all over the place The tent did very well, a very small amount of manageable condensation but no leaks or other water-related dramas to report on, so I feel confident in taking this out for multi-day trips. I also tried a new bivi bag, this is the Mountain Equipment Ion.. can’t report on how well it works yet, but as soon as I’ve given it a good ol’ WildBeare Torture Test I’ll let you know Gear List

My first DCF tent! (Dyneema Composite Fabric) Just 485g.. kinda crazy! I was hoping to find something a bit stealthier, maybe a camo DCF tent, but I wasn’t able to find anything in those kinda colours. So, I decided to go with the Durston X-mid, as I’ve been very impressed with the heavier non-pro version I really liked this tent but more importantly, my floppy joints will really enjoy the weight of it. I’m hoping to do some longer trips soon now that spring is (apparently) here and providing the weather will (please) warm up enough for me to carry a lighter sleeping bag, I’ll be feeling light as a feather :D ..pure joy after hauling 18kg on my back all winter Click on 'read more' at the bottom of this blog post to continue reading.. 9 Hours in a Survival Shelter.. this was grim! But a real eye-opener It was a sopping wet, rainy day in February and thought I’d see what it would be like to find myself lost in the wild and having to spend an unexpected night out, using only what was in my day-hiking rucksack. For this scenario, I had my usual day hiking bits & bobs.. food, stove, head torch, something to sit on, my down puffy, waterproof pack liner, med kit, hand warmers and an emergency shelter This time my shelter was a ‘Life Tent’ – a tiny lil thing, not much bigger than a drinks can and weighing around 300g. Something that I would chuck into a day pack, probably never think about again and *hopefully* never have to actually use.
