My first camping trip of Spring was so beautiful! I had my first proper swim of the year in 9°C water, watched the moon snuggle down into a cosy cloud, came upon some unexpected dafs, did a bit of lazy hiking and had two nights out without a route planned, just existing and rambling about, sometimes it's the most perfect way to do it! 💦 In cold water, don’t jump in when unacclimatised (risk of cold shock & potential drowning), work on your tolerance gradually, get a good feel for how your body responds to it and don’t underestimate the after-drop – your body temperature will likely continue to drop for a period of time even after you exit the water and get dressed. Not accounting for this may result in hypothermia post-swim, which, even if mild can cause confusion.. not ideal out in the middle of nowhere ⚠️ It’s good practice to be aware of any bodies of water upstream that could potentially flood into the river that you’re crossing, or swimming in, or camping near. We all know and expect that natural lakes can burst their banks and flood after heavy rain. But certain man-made reservoirs and dams can be particularly risky as the rivers below them cannot be expected to behave in such predictable ways. This river crossing above the gorge for example can be unexpectedly flooded with no warning, even when there has not been heavy rain in recent days. With this type of balance tip dam upstream, unless you’ve actually been to check out the water levels up at the reservoirs, there’s no knowing if or when the water level might reach its tipping point and suddenly be released, and so crossing or entering the river at all is best avoided. Always check your map to see what might be lurking upstream That being said, adventuring and life in general is never risk free. So be aware, be prepared, make sensible-ish decisions and have fun It was early March, and I had arrived toward the western border of Eryri, for my last trip of winter. It was pleasantly mild for the time of year, 14°C.. my perfect hiking temperature! I had 4 days of food with me, my supplies and home on my back, and a thirst for adventure  Day 1 I was on my way to a wide valley surrounded by low peaks, but first I would have to travel across some boggy ground. Still squelchy everywhere from winter wetness, the going was slow, not helped by a gate that I needed to use being in disrepair, and having big ‘ol rusty nails sticking out of it. After straddling the adjoining fence with my huge rucksack on and nearly getting stuck, I eventually I made it on to a track, which was easy going in parts, and in other parts completely flooded and full of lovely frogs After passing a majestic sheep, perched on top of his hay bales and looking like a king with his loyal subjects surrounding him on the ground below, the track led me into the valley, and across a ford, which I stumbled across and gave my nice dry right foot a refreshing dunk into. And then I reached the lake – Llyn Hesgyn. From my position on the track, the area surrounding the lake looked boggy, so I decided to head up the hill next to me to the east, and find a pitch there for my first night The weather was turning. The temperature was dropping and there was light rain in the air. I put on my rain coat and starting trudging upward, following a sunken drystone wall all the way to my first lil summit. I’m not sure what this one is called; my maps says both ‘Craig yr Hafod’ and ‘Cyfiau’, although I’ve no idea if those are just the names of the westerly and easterly slopes, respectively Up by the 534m summit there was a perfect, grassy lil clearing for my tent. From here I could see the peaks on the other side of the valley, where I’d be headed tomorrow. But for now, I just wanted to pitch my tent, get cosy and have my dinner. Typically, the wind died down and there was no need for such a hardcore tent, but I was unexpectedly treated to one of the most beautiful camps! I pitched on an open, rock-scattered plateau up at 400 metres. The stars came out during the cold night, I slept deeply and I unzipped the tent in the morning to see clouds flowing down the nearby cliffs, billowing out into the open expanse behind me The waves flowed for hours and were absolutely mesmerising. This one was so gorgeous A few days of peace & freedom in the Rhinogydd, full of moonbeams, autumn colours, beautiful views, wind, rain, mud, and adventure.. Day 1 – distance walked 4.1km It was a still and pleasant Autumn afternoon as I arrived in the very south of the Rhinogydd, with 4 days of supplies on my back and only one objective; to summit the small peak of Y Garn, who currently had his head in the clouds. I trudged along muddy tracks through a woodland valley, before turning west onto open access land. The way was slow, wet and pathless through long grass, with old ruined stone huts dotted about from previous mining activity. One had a lovely tree bursting out of it, filling the space previously taken by the building, reclaiming its place in the hills Up at 300 metres, views of the valley below opened up, looking out over the wide, silty estuary of the Afon Mawddach. It was already starting to get dark, and as I pitched my tent, the air seemed tinged with hazy blues, with layers of mountains fading into the dusky evening After settling into my cosy sleeping bag and having my tea (chilli and rice with bread and butter – a camping fav of mine for the first night of a trip!) the crescent moon shone brightly, sending beams of light down between the surrounding clouds. I’d never witnessed such moonbeams before, and watched them dance along, lighting up the valley below. It was so very pretty. I’d arrived here for a summer trip in August, in the territory of my nemesis Cnicht, with no route plan, a few days of food and a set of both wet clothes and dry clothes. Once again, I wouldn’t end up having a go at Cnicht, as the weather came in and it just didn’t feel ‘right’.. Cnicht and I have a bit of a history you see; previous trips involving an insane tick attack, a wind-busted tent and a dislocated ankle had all created a general feel of foreboding for the area – the curse of Cnicht. But while this trip didn’t go particularly right, nothing went particularly wrong either, so maybe the curse is broken. Maybe we’re slowly warming to each other. Can I make it back on foot? I finally finished my first feature length film 🍿 of my first long distance hike! On the 5th of June 2024, I was blindfolded & left stranded 100km from home, as the crow flies, at a location unknown to me that I'd picked out blindly from a hat. @AshOutdoorsUK drove me out & left me there, alone with my nerves to find out where I was, and begin the long trek home I had my tent, a bivi and supplies on my back – not light gear as it was unseasonably cool. I also had 2 days of food and 2L of water to start me off My map showed me that I would need to walk 124km, and cross 3 entire counties Even if I could make it just a third of the way, it would be the furthest I had ever walked in my little life by far. Little did I know, this adventure along our English rights of way would basically be an obstacle course, including a cow chase, a soaked sleeping bag, an angry guard dog, bivi camping next to a road, about a million overgrown footpaths, ditch jumping, ridiculous stinging nettles, fights with hedgerows.. I'd anticipated the physical challenge of hauling up to 20kg of gear and water for miles & miles and I'd been training for months to prepare my body & correct a few ailments. What I didn't anticipate was how much of a mental game it would be.. ..to be stranded so far from home, alone, with so far to go and such a weight to carry. I find that the discomfort & fear are the first things to fade from memory. I already miss this adventure so much 🥲 There were no mountains, no waterfalls. Just a very real experience of England, my home country. A more understated beauty, a bit rough around the edges, with wonderful people along the way This project has been a huge part of my life for months now. It's been such a thrill to bring my crazy lil idea to life and document it. I've laughed & cried. It's been created from my blood, sweat and tears, literally haha. This was such a special occurrence for me, I created a dedicated video focused specifically on the aurora..
Stealth Camping on a lake peninsula! With my small tarp and a bivi bag, I wombled my way up to a beautiful mountain lake and made up a stealthy, low-profile lil nook to spend the night. My camp was totally hidden from view by bushy heather to my right and a rocky rise to my left, and I spent the evening watching Geese Friends going back and forth between adjacent lakes, beating each other up and bobbing around on the water. The stars sparkled above me and I fell asleep before midnight (unlike me) and woke early to a pink moon rising over rocky crags to the south. It was cold, around 5°C so I went back to sleep a while before enjoying a relaxed breakfast in the early spring sunshine This was a gorgeous lil jaunt Gear List

It was the 1st of March and armed with a pretty grim forecast as usual, I expected this to be another godawful-weather-ordeal so I didn’t even plan any kind of route, thinking I would be hunkering down in the forest all weekend. But instead, I was granted cold starry nights, clear skies, silence, snowy mountain views and babbling brooks surrounded by evergreens. Having no planned route to follow, I instinctively wandered in whichever direction I felt most drawn to. I visited mines, paddled in biting water and peered into some giant freaky holes too.
