STRANDED! Attempt #1

5/6/2024

Blindfolded & Abandoned 100km from Home.
Can I make it back on foot?

I finally finished my first feature length film 🍿 of my first long distance hike!

On the 5th of June 2024, I was blindfolded & left stranded 100km from home, as the crow flies, at a location unknown to me that I'd picked out blindly from a hat. @AshOutdoorsUK drove me out & left me there, alone with my nerves to find out where I was, and begin the long trek home

I had my tent, a bivi and supplies on my back – not light gear as it was unseasonably cool. I also had 2 days of food and 2L of water to start me off

My map showed me that I would need to walk 124km, and cross 3 entire counties

Even if I could make it just a third of the way, it would be the furthest I had ever walked in my little life by far. Little did I know, this adventure along our English rights of way would basically be an obstacle course, including a cow chase, a soaked sleeping bag, an angry guard dog, bivi camping next to a road, about a million overgrown footpaths, ditch jumping, ridiculous stinging nettles, fights with hedgerows..

I'd anticipated the physical challenge of hauling up to 20kg of gear and water for miles & miles and I'd been training for months to prepare my body & correct a few ailments. What I didn't anticipate was how much of a mental game it would be..

..to be stranded so far from home, alone, with so far to go and such a weight to carry.

I find that the discomfort & fear are the first things to fade from memory. I already miss this adventure so much 🥲 There were no mountains, no waterfalls. Just a very real experience of England, my home country. A more understated beauty, a bit rough around the edges, with wonderful people along the way

This project has been a huge part of my life for months now. It's been such a thrill to bring my crazy lil idea to life and document it. I've laughed & cried. It's been created from my blood, sweat and tears, literally haha. I'm so excited to finally share it with you guys :D

Thank you so much to everyone I met along the way. I could not have got as far as I did without the kindness of strangers 💚

New to STRANDED? Here's how it goes:

My good friend Ash chooses a variety of potential starting locations from a 100km radius circle from Ivinghoe Beacon (home)
I pick out one of those locations, blindly from a hat
I'm blindfolded and driven out to the unknown starting location that I've picked out
I'm abandoned there alone, still blindfolded, with my camping & filming gear
I attempt to make it back home on foot, filming my escapades along the way

The 100km radius circle..

Gear List
Stranded 1 took place in June - but with unseasonably cool nights dropping down to 6°C. Because of this, unfortunately I wasn't able to take my real lightweight summer camping gear, and was considerably heavier than what I would have liked

Ash of Ash Outdoors UK - for creating the start locations and the blind draw, agreeing to drop me off, picking me up after, always being there on the end of the phone and believing that I could do this when I didn't believe in myself

Friends & family - for cheering me on and keeping tabs on me, even though you thought it was nuts

Nick of Get Wild, an environmentalist who was also filming a time-lapse on a certain hill and gave me tea and a biscuit, thanks, it was so lovely to meet you

MSK Doc H.M. for advising me which muscles to strengthen and which to lengthen. With your advice, over the months prior I was able to correct my hip impingement and adductor tendonitis. I wouldn't have been able to even attempt this without your expert guidance (GP on the other hand just told me to 'stop hiking'.. helpful)

Most of all, thanks so much Wild Ones for coming along on this adventure with me. If it weren't for you guys watching, I wouldn't be able to take the time to do this mad stuff in the first place. You allow me to live my weird lil dreams. Thank you 💚

Superlight Gear Camping

25/6/2023

A lil camp using superlight gear; the 'Big 3' tent, sleeping bag and mat all coming in at under 1.5kg! Which is the lightest I've ever tried, but, the mat broke as soon as I lay on it

Here's what I used and a brief summary of my thoughts on these 3 items:

🏕 TENT Lanshan Pro 1 690g

Great in good weather. My pole was stuck in the collapsed position so I had to use a stick instead, but this actually worked just fine. Not sure what I would do in this situation in the mountains with no sticks around. Not so good in wet weather. Seam sealing can be tricky, sags a lot when wet, unforgiving of a bad pitch and human error

🏕 BAG Sea To Summit Spark II 490g

Love it so far! Kept me lovely and warm in 12/13°C. Think this might be perfect for my warm weather multi-night trips. Soo tiny and compact when compressed

🏕 MAT Thermarest Neoair Uberlight 250g

Broke internally at the head end as soon as I put weight on it. Wouldn't trust it at all out in the wild, or anywhere actually. In my opinion, not worth the 120g weight saving on the Xlite - I sent it back for a refund

The Mountain Adventure I Nearly Quit (but I'm so glad I didn't)

26/5/2023

Day 1

Man, what a day this was! It started so well, with both an 18km and a 30km circular route planned (I would decide which to do later on, depending on how my floppy joints did with it all). So with fresh legs, I set off straight into a thoroughly enjoyable scramble up the Afon Ddu gorge

I'd had a guided gorge walk here last year, so I was familiar with the route. Although, with my huge rucksack and no ropes or helmet, this time around was more of a poodling-up-the-sides and paddling-across-a-few-pools than a full on gorge walk. Naturally

I cautiously made it all the way up to the 'big waterfall'. It was so beautiful here. The gorge walls were steep and high and completely surrounded the falls and the plunge pool, the sun just peeking over the rim of the gorge, and then sinking out of view

Aware of the chill I might get in the shade, I had just a quick dunk before heading back down the gorge to the path and continuing on my way. I'd planned to camp on Moel Eilio and had just a few km of what I assumed would be fairly easy hiking

I was wrong about that, haha!

After the gorge, the path started steep but easy, a track up through Coed Dollgarog. But the track soon turned to nothing, and nothing soon turned to overgrown crazy. Just as I was getting tired out and the sun was disappearing behind the hill, overgrown crazy turned into boggy hell. In my attempt to avoid an obvious, endless bog crossing my way, I had ended up a fair distance onto a 250m wide area of thick, sticky, grass covered mud. The kind you get sucked in and stuck in, like half-set cement

This stretch had me reduced to tears..

Balance on wobbly grass tuft
Slip
Foot gets sucked down
Fall over
Repeat.

When I eventually collapsed, exhausted into my tent on Moel Eilio, rubbing my sore feet, I was questioning my life choices and had an uncomfortable feeling of wanting to go home

The moon and stars danced about my tent and Llyn Cowlyd; the deepest lake in North Wales, and my view for the evening.

I would wake up rested and go on to have one of my favourite trips ever. Sometimes, you just gotta sleep on it

24 Hours Wild! Dusting off my lightweight tent for Summer

13/5/2023

A night out in the mountains getting reacquainted with the Lanshan Pro 1, before taking it out on a multi-night trip

This was a hot day in May. 18/19°C in the shade, but my thermometer hit 40°C in the sun. I was meltingg 🫠 (hiking in anything over 14°C usually = melted Beare). But of course, the tumbling river was there to cool me down, and I had a beautiful evening, having a refresher with the tent and trying to figure out why I had a Flappy Front Bit 🤔

The sun set over the hills and Jupiter rose. The lil glowing head torches of the night hikers on the opposite mountain became visible in the dark (can you guess which mountain it is?)

It made me feel all warm and cosy inside, wondering who they were and what kind of adventures they were having
