In July I took out the F2 – an unissued 1993 French Army Tent, for a night in the woods This one was not as camouflaged as previous army gear that I’ve tried, but I do love the olive drab colour. There’s loads of floor space inside this two-person shelter, although I found the headroom a lil low, and the poles at the entrances were a bit annoying. But a cosy time was had, and I munched my way through my first French ration pack. I had high hopes but I think I picked a bad box for my tastes – ‘menu B’, which unknown to me contained a lot of fish, not my thing! The beef tortellini was lovely though, as was the dark chocolate This tent weighs about 3.3kilos, so it’s not light, especially for a single skin shelter (although it’s lighter than canvas army tents such as the 1990’s Dutch KL-94). It also doesn’t have any mesh screens, so there’s no way of closing the tent to keep the bugs out unless you shut it up entirely. There are thin ventilation panels along each side though My trail cam caught a hare and the night was peaceful, so I’ll have to try it again in the rain and let you know how it performs in weather Gear List

Early in July I had a beautiful night out in the woods, trying the KL-94, a Dutch ex-military canvas tent from the early 90’s. Apparently, things from the early 90’s can now be classed as vintage, but I can’t quite get my head around being old enough for that to be the case haha! I loved this tent! It had a thick rubbery floor, heavy fabric walls and chonky metal poles and stakes. I bought a big ol’ vintage mallet and had a bit too much fun swinging that around. I also bought in a 24Hr Dutch ration pack, which was actually quite delicious! I had a lovely night out munching my way through that, trying to avoid getting eaten alive by the bugs, and admiring a munty caught on my trail cam just behind the tent This is a really heavy shelter - about 6.5 kilos, so not one I'd want to carry in in a rucksack. It was so dark inside the tent, that I slept for 9 hours in mid summer! I’m not sure how this would perform in rain, but I will take it out in some wet weather in future and let you know Gear List

I’d decided to go out for a stealth with my lovely, second-hand British Military Bivi. Then I decided to get myself a 24hr ration pack to go with it. And then I thought, why not head out to an area fairly near an army base to see if I could go 24hrs undetected. So it kinda turned into this army-themed thing I settled down half a km from the base in public woodland, with it just in view through the trees. I was a sensible distance away so that aspect of my endeavour was kind of a non-issue, but the woods on this warm April day were absolutely teeming with people and dogs So, I would be hoping to go unnoticed by using my low-profile, camo shelter, being quiet, staying low and not moving around too much I really loved this one, getting to test out my stealth skills (I do love to hide!), munching my way through my first ration pack (although there was way too much for me to eat within 24hrs in there), and being entertained by the lovely doggos running about This was a simple night out. Under the trees. Under the moon. Listening to the birds and the Muntjac. I didn’t even bring my usual night-time filming lights, only using the red light on my head torch for this one, in the hopes that I wouldn’t be seen. I had a nice sleep, feeling stealthy and hidden and kept everything crossed that the morning doggos wouldn’t decide to alert their owners to my presence GEAR LIST

This bivi is 1.7 kilos, not light by any means compared to a simple bivi bag, but I thought this might provide a nice, stealthy lil nook for me to spend the night, and I was right! The camo was amazing – it blends so well into the surroundings without the need for my usual camo netting and chucking leaves & twigs all over the place. It was also roomier than I’d anticipated, allowing me to store some bits ‘n bobs and lots of room for me inside my floofy winter bag (the forecast had predicted a chilly 3°C night – pretty cool for September). It’s also super low-profile, so it just disappears behind long grass I had a perfect night out with this! There was a brief rain shower, and I’m glad it was brief as I’ve no idea if the bivi is even waterproof. Deer wandered close to camp with no idea that I was there, one even walking right behind me while I was sleeping. Stars twinkled between the leaves of the big tree that I was settled under, and I woke to a fresh, sunny morning after at least 8 hours of sleep You know when it all just feels so right? It was one of those :) However, I do think it would have been very different if the rain had come in. Being confined inside a zipped-up bivi in bad weather seems to me like a claustrophobic, condensation-ridden hell hole. But I’ll update you on that when I try it haha The end of the pole at the head end also kept popping out, but it wasn’t too much bother And HAPPY AUTUMN! The colours are starting to turn. The nights are getting longer.. I’m so content. Maybe I’m part bat or something but I do love this cosy descent into darkness and cold Gear List

What a wonderful way to blend in with the foliage for a stealth camp 👀 For this one I made my lil bed/shelter as low profile as possible. I used my foam mat, with a blanket and pillow, under a layer of camo netting. The resulting nook was completely flat and indistinguishable from the surrounding area, and I looked like a bush, so that was pretty neat I did bring a tarp in case of rain, but it was a lovely night and the tarp wasn’t needed. However, I was a bit chilly overnight. It must have dropped below 10degC (pretty cool for August) and the foam mat and blanket wasn’t quite warm enough, despite the floof provided by the ghillie suit The ghillie suit was real fun to try, although it was hot to wear during the day, and cumbersome to move around in. It also collected every piece of woodland/twig/leaf that it encountered, leaving me looking like a matted green sheep. Somehow I also developed a weird tail type thing.. not sure why or how that happened, but I ended up cutting it off I got to test it out in the morning, when I lay on the ground in full view and someone walked along the path a few metres away without even noticing I was there hehe. Although, I felt the colour of this suit would be better suited to evergreen forest than deciduous woods – I might need to try with a lighter green to match the ferns Gear List
