On the last day of January, I decided to try out my tiny tent for a cold camp. I don’t really enjoy the cramped feel of small shelters like this (Snugpak Ionosphere), but I thought that being such a small space, it might retain heat better than a bigger hiking tent. I was right! During the night I was surprised to find about 5-and-a-half °C of temperature difference between outside and inside the tent. This is similar to what I’ve experienced with my Hille in freezing conditions in the past, so, very impressive This was a totally beautiful night! Big mountain views of an icy Yr Wyddfa, a pastel sunset, and a starry sky including our winter friend Orion, various planets, Pleiades and our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda too. I didn’t sleep very well (the ground wasn’t quite right), but that meant that I got to watch lots of tiny lights climbing the mountain, followed by a frosty, pink sunrise. Shoutout to anyone who night-climbed Snowdon and watched the sun rise from his summit on February 1st, I was watching you! In a non-creepy way haha As excited as I am for spring and to feel a little heat from the sun, this winter has actually been a real treat so far. I’ve had lots of cold, pretty nights out, compared to last winter which was mild and wet as hell. Apologies to the bad-weather lovers though, I didn’t get much of it over summer and now winter has been kind to me as well, but rest assured I have plenty of plans for wet & wild antics when I get the weather for it on my free weekends GEAR LIST

It was the day after I’d had a tent break in the wind, and I returned to the same area with a very similar forecast, this time armed with my Hille. Typically, the wind died down and there was no need for such a hardcore tent, but I was unexpectedly treated to one of the most beautiful camps! I pitched on an open, rock-scattered plateau up at 400 metres. The stars came out during the cold night, I slept deeply and I unzipped the tent in the morning to see clouds flowing down the nearby cliffs, billowing out into the open expanse behind me The waves flowed for hours and were absolutely mesmerising. It was like a giant waterfall, but made of cloud. A cloudfall. I’ll never forget it GEAR LIST

There was a standard slightly ropey mountain forecast but nothing out of the ordinary. I wasn’t expecting it to be a bad-weather-tent-test kinda camp and I thought I was pitching in a nice sheltered spot by a lake backed by majestic cliffs, then the wind changed direction, naturally The tent poles were bending inwards, two of the pole sections kept pulling apart and then the crossbar snapped. I didn’t manage to get the tent up fully so I can’t say how it would have fared if I’d finished with it, but I just don’t trust lightweight pole tents in our unhinged UK weather This tent has performed very well in more sheltered conditions (see that video here), it has innovative design features and is a great tent. I just don't think that lightweight and 'stormworthy' are qualities that can be found together in pole tents. In my experience, you choose one or the other GEAR LIST

This one was so gorgeous A few days of peace & freedom in the Rhinogydd, full of moonbeams, autumn colours, beautiful views, wind, rain, mud, and adventure.. Day 1 – distance walked 4.1km It was a still and pleasant Autumn afternoon as I arrived in the very south of the Rhinogydd, with 4 days of supplies on my back and only one objective; to summit the small peak of Y Garn, who currently had his head in the clouds. I trudged along muddy tracks through a woodland valley, before turning west onto open access land. The way was slow, wet and pathless through long grass, with old ruined stone huts dotted about from previous mining activity. One had a lovely tree bursting out of it, filling the space previously taken by the building, reclaiming its place in the hills Up at 300 metres, views of the valley below opened up, looking out over the wide, silty estuary of the Afon Mawddach. It was already starting to get dark, and as I pitched my tent, the air seemed tinged with hazy blues, with layers of mountains fading into the dusky evening After settling into my cosy sleeping bag and having my tea (chilli and rice with bread and butter – a camping fav of mine for the first night of a trip!) the crescent moon shone brightly, sending beams of light down between the surrounding clouds. I’d never witnessed such moonbeams before, and watched them dance along, lighting up the valley below. It was so very pretty. At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

This turned out to be an absolutely beautiful night. It was chilly, with temperatures hovering just above freezing, and actually dipping a little below in the early hours. After the sun set, there was a bright moon, and after the moon had sunk below the horizon, the milky way could be seen hanging above my tent, along with pastel hues of pink and green from a very faint aurora As for the tent.. I’m perpetually looking for the ideal tent for my multi-night trips. This time I was trying ‘The One’ by Gossamer Gear. This is a one-person, single skin, sil nylon shelter. Functionality and performance wise, my favourite lightweight trekking pole tent in my DCF Durston Xmid Pro1.. but I just can’t get on board with how blue and un-stealthy it is. I love the look amd feel of my Lanshan Pro 1, but it repeatedly requires seam sealing, and isn’t overly reliable. So I figured this one might be a happy compromise between the two. This is what I was hoping for;
It’s definitely light, at 630g all in. The colour.. it’s not exactly what I was hoping for. The listing showed a grey tent, which would be perfect as it would just look like a rock, but in reality, it seemed to me to be more of a greeny blue. But, the colour seems to change depending on weather conditions, and in dull cloudy weather I was pretty happy with it. And the seams are factory sealed, which is amazing as I can’t stand seam sealing myself. So, this one should be waterproof straight out of the bag, hurray It was also easy to set up – just peg in the four corners and stick the trekking poles in. There’s just the one door, with the back having a large mesh ventilation panel under a lip to keep the rain out. Being single skin, condensation will always be a consideration. As with all single skin tents, a bivi bag to cover the sleeping bag and something to mop up the walls of the tent are essential. Room inside was adequate for my sleep system and gear, and the vestibule is pretty large. Headroom is great. There’s also a built in ‘washing line’ in the vestibule (handy!), which doubles as a guy line that you can use to furl up the vestibule – a great option for cooking in the rain. There’s also side-wall tie out points, which give extra space inside and add stability to the shelter The floor is thin (the entire tent is composed of 10D ripstop silnylon) so I popped a lightweight ground sheet underneath for a little extra protection. In the morning, the weather started to come in. The lil tent took the rain just fine, I didn’t notice any leaking at all and it took gusts of up to 36km/h with no issue. This is pretty standard mountain weather so nothing out of the ordinary, but reassuring none-the-less. I’ll try to get it out in some slightly more demonic weather at some point to see how it fares Gear List

And so the Cnicht saga continues, with a very wet, 3-night adventure in the Moelwyns! I’d arrived here for a summer trip in August, in the territory of my nemesis Cnicht, with no route plan, a few days of food and a set of both wet clothes and dry clothes. Once again, I wouldn’t end up having a go at Cnicht, as the weather came in and it just didn’t feel ‘right’.. Cnicht and I have a bit of a history you see; previous trips involving an insane tick attack, a wind-busted tent and a dislocated ankle had all created a general feel of foreboding for the area – the curse of Cnicht. But while this trip didn’t go particularly right, nothing went particularly wrong either, so maybe the curse is broken. Maybe we’re slowly warming to each other. It appears to have worked :D I had such a gorgeous night out in a dry lil umbrella nook, slept for 10 hours! (I had just filmed a night out in a survival shelter the night before, so was glad of the long rest) and I decided to have a dip in the river on the way out – a nice refreshing 13.7°C. Met a lovely grasshopper. It was even dry to set up, and dry to pack away, while getting to listen to the rain for hours overnight- perfection! And now I know that it’s waterproof, I can move on to my next plans for the brolly. Just waiting for a bad enough weather forecast on one of my camping weekends. Almost There – Simon Folwar Awakening - Monument Music Slow Down – Brock Hewitt Your Own World - Sonda All from Uppbeat with license On a chilly evening in July, I headed out to the mountains with Frank to try out another survival shelter – this time it was the Lifesystems 2. I had just my day hiking stuff, so no sleeping bag etc, to see how I’d do with this shelter had I become lost or injured and had to unexpectedly spend a night in the hills Having never had it out before, I was surprised how small it was, especially for a 2-person shelter. However, we both fit in ok squished up (although I have to say, if Frank were bigger and had his own rucksack, this would have been quite a challenge haha!) However, due to the small size and sturdy construction, this thing held in an unbelievable amount of heat. I tested the inside/outside temperatures twice, and both times got a difference of 6 to 7°C, which I think is the biggest temperature difference I’ve ever recorded so far This is a well-made shelter, which is not prone to ripping or tearing unlike the last survival shelter I tried, but it remains light enough to chuck in a day bag at 345g. Frank and I got to try it out in the rain, got eaten alive by midges and had a pretty cosy (ok, cramped) night in this lil thing. Condensation will always be an issue of course, so you’ll still need waterproofs, and no sleep was had due to the uncomfortable conditions, but it kept me perfectly warm with no sleeping bag (very rare for a coldy like me!) and could have saved my life in an actual emergency There’s a window, an air vent, reflective strips, and 2 lil bum-seat areas so that you don’t have to park your rear directly onto wet ground (yay). The bright orange colour is great for attracting attention from bugs mountain rescue. It’s also real simple, not requiring any hanging-from-trees or creating ridgelines; you simply put it over your head and wait out the weather. I imagine it would also be handy for sandwich stops on wet days. It’s deffo my new fav shelter to carry in my day hiking bag I was pretty close to my car for this in case it went wrong – not a good idea to do silly stuff in the mountains without a solid back up plan :) Gear List

A few days alone in the Arans! This trip didn’t go to plan at all but I got my first dip of the year, found a beautiful waterfall pool, enjoyed hiking in heat, came across a tree that had exploded, I guess from lightning. I even saw a lizard, which I didn’t even know we had in the UK until I looked it up afterward. And the trip ended a day earlier than I'd planned, but in the most unexpected and breathtaking fashion.
