And most of all, having some much-needed nature time. I’d not been out for ages and it was so good to just hang out in the woods I won’t lie to you I proper cremated this 1.6kilo tomahawk. I cooked up a delicious dinner on the firebox; smoky sausages with smoky paprika and parsley mash and gravy. Had to evict more spiders than I would have liked but had a lazy morning of relaxing in heavy rain and spotting deer. The tent was a little leaky, but I loved the foresty, bushcrafty vibes, it kinda felt like camping out under a tarp with a tent at the back. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it, but started by hanging the middle tie-out point from a ridgeline between two evergreens, making use of the surrounding foliage for camouflage I kept securing different points until I’d created a sort of floating cube shape, which I then pegged into the ground, covered with looooads of camo netting, leaves, twigs and moss to blend it in as much as I could I really loved it. It wasn’t the stealthiest that I’ve ever made, but it was good enough, and inside was huge! It had such den vibes, and I had a beautiful night in the woods, cooking meat on my firebox and hanging out with all the small critters After a long sleep and bacon baps, a thunderstorm rolled in with rain and loud rumbles and booms. It was a really wonderful camp and it felt kind of a shame to pack it away Gear List

I love this configuration as it creates the walls, the door and a floor, all from one tarp! The last time I tried this was with a 3.5x3.5m tarp, hung from a tree (see that one here), and it was pretty perfect. But I wanted to see if it could be done with a trekking pole. So, armed with a smaller and lighter 3x3m tarp and a new, slightly longer trekking pole, I gave it a shot My initial thoughts were that it looked a bit shoddy. I do like the look of a nice taught tarp with clean lines, but my trekking pole, even over-extended, still wasn’t quite long enough to give it the height required for that. However, looking past the slight sagworthiness, it was still a great shelter.. Just big enough inside to take my sleep system, so you wouldn’t want to go any smaller than 3x3 with your tarp. Fully enclosed to retain a bit of body heat on a cold night and protect from rain, and that awesome ability to perform a little tarpology, and open it up into an ideal, open shelter for cooking and chilling at camp, before folding it down enclosed again for bed I cooked chonky lamb steaks on my firebox and hung out with crows and tawny owls Only 2 weeks til Spring officially starts, how exciting! Trying a bit of mesh tent & tarp camping! I decided to use just the mesh inner from my claustrophobic & fairly awkward lil Snugpak Ionosphere for this, leaving the outer fly at home and instead pairing it with a lightweight tarp overhead This turned out to be a perfect combination :D the mesh tent kept the hoards of spiders off me while I slept, so I didn’t need to use a head bug net for a change. And the open tarp formation above, propped up with my trekking poles and sticks, allowed me to see all around me and really feel like I was outside, while still being protected from any rain I had such a beautiful autumn night out! I cooked the most delicious chicken and chorizo baps, slept soundly in the fresh woodland air, and found an amazing skull (which I thought was a badger, but according to my very knowledgeable viewers, is actually a fox!). Boris the Fox has now joined the Dead Gang in my living room, along with my deer, sheep and mountain goat skulls. Very pleased to add a fox to the collection. He has some mean ol’ teeth! This was one of my favourite set-ups, being so open but protected. I’m not sure that it would hold up well in wind, but it was great for a sheltered woodland camp. Gear List

I wanted to think this is really cool but I just can’t get my head around the fact that you still need to bring a raincoat, in addition to your ponchos, because you have to take the ponchos off to erect them as a shelter.. seems a bit pointless really But with that inconvenient issue aside, the two ponchos joined together really easily via zips and velcro. It was a bit faffy getting the shelter up and getting the mesh inner installed but I got there in the end, and got to enjoy a nice lil nook out of the rain with a mesh-enclosed bedroom area Another issue is that it looks like you can only install one mesh inner under the 2 ponchos, so one of you would be out with the bugs in the vestibule area.. although I think I preferred the space inside without the mesh inner installed – a head bug net would suffice to keep the bugs off the important parts I whipped up a delicious pork chow mein for my tea and spent a lovely rainy night in the woods Thank you to Frank for being the second poncho wearer and keeping me company Ps. A new tarp configuration.. apparently it's a variation on a plough point, but I'm calling this one a forest tent. Isn't it the cutest!
This was super simple to set up - just a case of pegging in the back centre point and then lifting the front with the sticks, tensioning with a guy rope and pegging down the front corners I then got to work cooking a beef curry from scratch, made with sirloin steak, and had a lovely sleep in among the trees, waking to light rain showers pitter-pattering on the tarp I even caught some sweet fallow deer on one of my trail cams too! This is a lovely, simple configuration that provides great coverage, and is nice and sheltered due to the back being tapered down to the ground. The spare flappage at the back gets folded under, creating a covered floor area at the rear. You could also hang the front from a ridgeline instead of using sticks. One of my new favs!

Here's a quick how-to for this config..
I took my DCF tent out for a trial run in the rain and did some chaotic but delicious cooking! It was late April and plenty of rain was forecast, so I took myself out to the woods to have a soggy night out in the Xmid Pro1, just to check it was all sound really before taking it on a longer adventure As it got dark, I started cooking my tea – chicken tikka masala baps. You’d think this would be quite simple really, but I somehow managed to smoke myself out. The food was absolutely delicious though! One of my favourite woodland meals so far (I know I always say that) As I settled down to eat my creation, rain started to fall, just lightly. But it continued all through the night, getting heavier and giving the woods a good drenching. I’d actually never seen these woods so full of water, there are no streams here usually but, on this morning, they had popped up all over the place The tent did very well, a very small amount of manageable condensation but no leaks or other water-related dramas to report on, so I feel confident in taking this out for multi-day trips. I also tried a new bivi bag, this is the Mountain Equipment Ion.. can’t report on how well it works yet, but as soon as I’ve given it a good ol’ WildBeare Torture Test I’ll let you know Gear List

It was time to dust of my old friend – the Giant Leaky Umbrella This time for a stealth camp. I just love the dome-like space under this umbrella, and thought it would make a perfect frame to build a stealth den for the night There was some rain and wind forecast for the next morning, so my first job was to anchor it down as securely as I could, and make it waterproof (gotta love an umbrella that isn’t actually waterproof!) Being an umbrella, it is of course the prefect shape to get whipped away by a gust of wind, so I guyed it down from all of my modded attachment points, and from the middle point at the back. I then clipped my real light, DCF tarp over the top of it to make it waterproof. Next came the camo netting, followed by leaves and sticks, until my lil den just looked like a big pile of woodland stuff. From above, it was nearly invisible, however from the ground you could still make out the dome-like structure. I messed up a bit, because by building the den with the doorway facing away from the wind, I had unwittingly set it up with the doorway instead facing a small path, pretty close by that I didn’t know was there. So, I hoped for the best that no one would come along I got my lil nook all set up inside and settled down to make my most delicious camping meal yet. I cooked lamb chops in garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper, and then fried up some pre-cooked rice in the meat juices. A lil weevil friend walked around the rim of my pot over and over and over, and I snuggled down for a lovely sleep in the woods I woke to gusts of wind, followed by the pitter-patter of rain on my shelter. It felt real cosy, and as I sat and had my breakfast, the weather really came in, with a random and short-lived mini rain storm. My lil shelter held fast in some pretty strong gusts of wind and was a lovely way to spend a night in the woods Gear List

Oliver Michael – Ever Since The Hipcat Swagger – Ritchie Everett Mum Child – Aurora Light Patterns - Tethers All from Epidemic Sound, Artlist and Uppbeat with license Ahh a lovely fully enclosed tarp configuration. This one is called the Pyramid. This is a super-simple set up, although I had some trouble initially, as I found that my trekking pole wasn’t quite long enough to erect it, leaving me with a floppy tarp (never a good thing). This pole claims to be 132cm, but I measure it as 125cm fully extended, and 5cm of that is the spike, which just sinks into this kind of ground. So, I decided instead to suspend it from a ridge line, strung between the adjacent trees. This worked really well, and had the added bonus of no pole getting in the way I thought this arrangement looked so pretty in the fading light, and decided to name her Primrose – Primrose the Pyramid. I found that Primrose’s flaps were quite annoying. This formation would be amazing in bad weather, great protection from the elements, but on a dry evening getting in and out, I just kept getting caught up in the flaps I got the fire going and cooked up some delicious sausage and onion baps before settling down for a lovely sleep in the woods I woke to a chorus of birds, a tawny owl and crows, and sat in the doorway of the tarp, wondering if I could modify it somehow. I played around lifting one side and created a new, much more open configuration, and sat to have breakfast with woodland views. I just love how versatile tarps are! Gear List
