A Stealthy Den against a Fallen Tree 🍂 Armed with a small tarp, some pegs, cordage, camo netting and a trekking pole, I headed out into the foggy woods to create some kind of shelter against a big fallen tree It wasn’t perfect or invisible, but it was pretty low-key and I had the best time sheltering out of the light rain, watching leaves fall from the trees and spotting deer. I saw two bucks with their majestic antlers, one was a beautiful white boy, which I’d never seen before! And had a cosy night in my autumn nook Typically, this lil woodland has no people wandering around in it, no road noise, but it turns out, it’s right under a flight path instead (there’s always something haha!) So, it’s back to the drawing board with finding a quiet local place to camp. I’m gonna find somewhere one day I just know it! 😬🤞 Gear List

Aves – Rush Hour Narrow Skies – With the Earth American Legion – Reflections Aerian – Zephyr Monument Music – Majestic Whispers All from Epidemic Sound, Artlist & Uppbeat with license It was a windy day in mid October, and I decided to try camping in an old abandoned mining trench, with a tarp for a roof! At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

Just about enough time had passed for me to have forgotten the horrors of the two previous attempts, so it was time for round 3 of Stone Hut with a Tarp. Armed with a bigger tarp, a massive pole and a healthy dose of Being A Stubborn Cow, I took a drenching as I wrestled my 3.5x3.5m multicam over the old slate construction in the wind, shoved a pole up in the middle and hoped for the best Would this be third time lucky.. or another fail? So far, so good. It had taken 1.5 hours to set up the tarp, but it seemed pretty solid. Every guy line was well anchored down with rocks and the pole was working a treat – creating a pitch in the roof so that the water ran straight off instead of pooling on top, and holding the whole thing nice and taught The extra fabric of the larger sized tarp allowed for a sizable flap to come over the doorway – this stopped the rain coming in through the door, and for the first time, it felt relatively dry inside A small tear had already developed on the front where the tarp had ripped on the sharp slate, but other than that, there didn’t seem to be any major issues. I just had to hope that this small tear didn’t turn into oh-dear-my-tarp’s-been-ripped-in-half like the first attempt I changed into my dry clothes and settled down in my sleeping bag for some hot noodles, fully expecting to have to bail at any moment. But the hours ticked by, the wind and the rain continued, and still everything held in place. This was promising, and as bedtime approached and I was still sheltered, I was beginning to feel quietly confident As darkness fell, an occasional gust would come and knock the pole out of place, but it was easy to just pop it back in place. The wind got up and the tarp shook, but still it held fast. I fell asleep sometime after midnight, and woke up as the sky was starting to get light.. somewhat surprised to still have a roof above my head I had done it! A dry(ish) night in the old stone hut. This time around, it had been a brilliant shelter. As I examined the state of things in the morning, I found that bigger rips were forming in the tarp, but none had affected me on this night. I thought I'd try the stone hut with a tarp thing again, but this time with a ridiculously heavy, robust 3x3m polycotton tarp I was pretty confident that this was gonna work out and I'd get that cosy night in the hut that I was hoping for But, it was not to be. This tarp didn't rip in the wind like the last one did, but it did let water through instead. It was a wet night, spent entirely in the bivi bag in an attempt to stay dry, plus no sleep whatsoever. I made a cosy nook in this beautiful old boy, ready for a 0°C night in the woods. There were a lot of people around during the daylight hours so I was a little on edge that I may have been seen, but this was a beautiful night nonetheless. I heard a Red Kite (I think), Muntjac, and what may or may not have been an angry badger. I also had fun experimenting with some camo netting for the first time – really liked this! This wasn't what I had planned for this camp, but there were too many people around to set a tarp up out in the open. And with no leaves on the trees for cover, it's open everywhere. So I used my small tarp as a ground sheet under a beautiful evergreen and had a cosy night. It turns out the tree kept me much warmer than I would have been, with a 3°C temperature difference between outside in the open and under the tree 😯 I mean, -3 is cold, but it's warmer than -6 🥶 I don't think I've experienced such cold temperatures before. During the night, my fingers felt like they were starting to freeze as soon as I got out of the bag. But as long as I stayed in the bag, I was toasty warm and had a nice 8 hour sleep to the sound of a slightly irate owl 🦉 Camping in this temperature was challenging. There's a lot to think about. Not just keeping yourself warm enough but your water, fuel and electronics too. Despite being as floofed up as the Michelin Man, I got through 2 sets of handwarmers, which was a first, as usually one set is enough But, if you've got gear (or handwarmers 😄) good enough to keep you warm, this is a really lovely way to spend a night. I'm craving spring now. There's deffo a smidge of warmth in the midday sun. Things are moving and preparing under the ground. It's just round the corner :) Gear List

The slate was starting to rip the tarp and when the wind really got going late at night, it got completely destroyed One side of the tarp was ripped off entirely, as was the back corner.
