A Stealthy Den against a Fallen Tree 🍂 Armed with a small tarp, some pegs, cordage, camo netting and a trekking pole, I headed out into the foggy woods to create some kind of shelter against a big fallen tree It wasn’t perfect or invisible, but it was pretty low-key and I had the best time sheltering out of the light rain, watching leaves fall from the trees and spotting deer. I saw two bucks with their majestic antlers, one was a beautiful white boy, which I’d never seen before! And had a cosy night in my autumn nook Typically, this lil woodland has no people wandering around in it, no road noise, but it turns out, it’s right under a flight path instead (there’s always something haha!) So, it’s back to the drawing board with finding a quiet local place to camp. I’m gonna find somewhere one day I just know it! 😬🤞 Gear List

This bivi is 1.7 kilos, not light by any means compared to a simple bivi bag, but I thought this might provide a nice, stealthy lil nook for me to spend the night, and I was right! The camo was amazing – it blends so well into the surroundings without the need for my usual camo netting and chucking leaves & twigs all over the place. It was also roomier than I’d anticipated, allowing me to store some bits ‘n bobs and lots of room for me inside my floofy winter bag (the forecast had predicted a chilly 3°C night – pretty cool for September). It’s also super low-profile, so it just disappears behind long grass I had a perfect night out with this! There was a brief rain shower, and I’m glad it was brief as I’ve no idea if the bivi is even waterproof. Deer wandered close to camp with no idea that I was there, one even walking right behind me while I was sleeping. Stars twinkled between the leaves of the big tree that I was settled under, and I woke to a fresh, sunny morning after at least 8 hours of sleep You know when it all just feels so right? It was one of those :) However, I do think it would have been very different if the rain had come in. Being confined inside a zipped-up bivi in bad weather seems to me like a claustrophobic, condensation-ridden hell hole. But I’ll update you on that when I try it haha The end of the pole at the head end also kept popping out, but it wasn’t too much bother And HAPPY AUTUMN! The colours are starting to turn. The nights are getting longer.. I’m so content. Maybe I’m part bat or something but I do love this cosy descent into darkness and cold Gear List

Easy to Love – Saggie Ballerino – Yehezkel Raz Like a Bird – Hatamitsunami Meeting across the River – Staffan Carlen All from Artlist and Epidemic Sound with license I’d tried stealth camping close to this road before, hidden in a bit of a divot in the ground, and pulled it off quite successfully, so this time I decided to try it in plain sight instead It was all going a bit wonky from the start.. Firstly, I bought green woodland camo netting, as I was expecting the area to be full of waist-high ferns. However, the ferns were low and sparse, so the green camo was totally the wrong colour. Secondly, there was a red ants next right under where I wanted to run my tarp from a tree in a low plough point configuration that would be easy to blend into the ground. But, not being one to give up easily, I gave it a go anyway, placing the shelter further toward the road, away from the ants, and using a low-ish lean-to configuration, that would be just high enough for me to be able to sit behind it unnoticed, hopefully The camo netting being the wrong colour wasn’t too much of an issue in the end, as the texture of it allowed me to weave sticks into it and hold leaves and debris in place, making it satisfactorily blend into the surrounding colours. Once finished, I felt confident that I wouldn’t be seen by any passing vehicles, but I didn’t feel confident that I would go unnoticed by anyone walking by. But this was a country road with no paths, so I wasn’t expecting people to be walking along it anyway Gear List

Brown – Jack Lineham Cocktail – Devin Thomas Arne Dawn Breaks - Sulyya All from Filmstro and Uppbeat with license It was time to dust of my old friend – the Giant Leaky Umbrella This time for a stealth camp. I just love the dome-like space under this umbrella, and thought it would make a perfect frame to build a stealth den for the night There was some rain and wind forecast for the next morning, so my first job was to anchor it down as securely as I could, and make it waterproof (gotta love an umbrella that isn’t actually waterproof!) Being an umbrella, it is of course the prefect shape to get whipped away by a gust of wind, so I guyed it down from all of my modded attachment points, and from the middle point at the back. I then clipped my real light, DCF tarp over the top of it to make it waterproof. Next came the camo netting, followed by leaves and sticks, until my lil den just looked like a big pile of woodland stuff. From above, it was nearly invisible, however from the ground you could still make out the dome-like structure. I messed up a bit, because by building the den with the doorway facing away from the wind, I had unwittingly set it up with the doorway instead facing a small path, pretty close by that I didn’t know was there. So, I hoped for the best that no one would come along I got my lil nook all set up inside and settled down to make my most delicious camping meal yet. I cooked lamb chops in garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper, and then fried up some pre-cooked rice in the meat juices. A lil weevil friend walked around the rim of my pot over and over and over, and I snuggled down for a lovely sleep in the woods I woke to gusts of wind, followed by the pitter-patter of rain on my shelter. It felt real cosy, and as I sat and had my breakfast, the weather really came in, with a random and short-lived mini rain storm. I looove hammock camping (I find it so comfy!) but I don’t do it often as I always feel so obvious and visible hanging above the ground. So for this camp I decided to stealth it up using 3 panels of camo netting. I used the hammock with no bug net, just a head bug net to wear while sleeping. I went tarpless for this one as no rain was forecast, although I did have a ground sheet that I could chuck over myself if things became unexpectedly wet. I’m glad it didn’t rain though as this might have been a bit of a chaotic arrangement! I had such a nice night in the woods - my first mild night out this year, playing suduko, spotting muntjac, eating spagbol, watching a spider eat an unfortunate woodlouse, making friends with a moth and just chilling in my comfy lil nook. In the morning there were loads of dog walkers on the nearby paths, so I got to test out my stealthiness and managed to go completely unseen Gear List

With my small tarp and a bivi bag, I wombled my way up to a beautiful mountain lake and made up a stealthy, low-profile lil nook to spend the night. My camp was totally hidden from view by bushy heather to my right and a rocky rise to my left, and I spent the evening watching Geese Friends going back and forth between adjacent lakes, beating each other up and bobbing around on the water. The stars sparkled above me and I fell asleep before midnight (unlike me) and woke early to a pink moon rising over rocky crags to the south. It was cold, around 5°C so I went back to sleep a while before enjoying a relaxed breakfast in the early spring sunshine This was a gorgeous lil jaunt Gear List

What a wonderful way to blend in with the foliage for a stealth camp 👀 For this one I made my lil bed/shelter as low profile as possible. I used my foam mat, with a blanket and pillow, under a layer of camo netting. The resulting nook was completely flat and indistinguishable from the surrounding area, and I looked like a bush, so that was pretty neat I did bring a tarp in case of rain, but it was a lovely night and the tarp wasn’t needed. However, I was a bit chilly overnight. It must have dropped below 10degC (pretty cool for August) and the foam mat and blanket wasn’t quite warm enough, despite the floof provided by the ghillie suit The ghillie suit was real fun to try, although it was hot to wear during the day, and cumbersome to move around in. It also collected every piece of woodland/twig/leaf that it encountered, leaving me looking like a matted green sheep. Somehow I also developed a weird tail type thing.. not sure why or how that happened, but I ended up cutting it off I got to test it out in the morning, when I lay on the ground in full view and someone walked along the path a few metres away without even noticing I was there hehe. Although, I felt the colour of this suit would be better suited to evergreen forest than deciduous woods – I might need to try with a lighter green to match the ferns Gear List

D Fine Us – Howling at the Moon Maya Belsitzman- Wandering Caterpillar – Scene 1 Garden Friend – Hide & Seek Henyao – I Am Monster Yehezkel Raz – Ballerina Novembers – Just Ripe All from Epidemic Sound & Artlist with license I think this is my stealthiest camp so far! :D I found a lil ditch and fixed a lightweight tarp over a low ridgeline, before blending it into the ground using camo netting, leaves and twigs. If I didn’t make it, I would never have known it was there! This set-up was too low to sit up in, but I was able to slide right underneath it, so it would have given me complete coverage in the rain, if I had needed it I had a lovely night in the woods and went undetected, except for a passing dog, who didn’t see me at first, but when I moved he was startled to see a lunatic hiding in a ditch so he just stood there and barked. I was worried I was gonna get busted but he just backed away back to the path and his owners I used my foam mat for this one, which was a little chilly at night what with it dropping to 10 °C.. I think I prefer to use the foam mat in 14 °C+ Gear List

I really loved using the brown camo netting before to blend in with the ground, so I thought I'd try with green this time to try to blend in above ground with the summer foliage There were paths on both sides, and I managed to not be seen, even when someone strayed off the path and wandered right in front of my camp, although that did feel a bit close for comfort haha This was a hot day, 28°C and there was also a little light rain, which sounded so lovely although it didn't even seem to breach the tree canopy. Thunderstorms were forecast, and I was excited to experience a storm under a tarp, but typically they didn't start until I was driving home I met an angry bug on this camp! He fell out of a tree, seemed kinda shell-shocked, and when he started getting active he launched a piece of wood and pumped himself up to fight. He was big and a bit fluffy. I wasn't sure what he was so had to look it up.. apparently he's a Cockchafer. Which I found highly amusing, had the giggles that day haha! You can also call him a Doddlebug, which sounds much cuter I think. Gear List
