A fully enclosed tarp camp using my trekking pole! I love this configuration as it creates the walls, the door and a floor, all from one tarp! The last time I tried this was with a 3.5x3.5m tarp, hung from a tree (see that one here), and it was pretty perfect. But I wanted to see if it could be done with a trekking pole. So, armed with a smaller and lighter 3x3m tarp and a new, slightly longer trekking pole, I gave it a shot My initial thoughts were that it looked a bit shoddy. I do like the look of a nice taught tarp with clean lines, but my trekking pole, even over-extended, still wasn’t quite long enough to give it the height required for that. However, looking past the slight sagworthiness, it was still a great shelter.. Just big enough inside to take my sleep system, so you wouldn’t want to go any smaller than 3x3 with your tarp. Fully enclosed to retain a bit of body heat on a cold night and protect from rain, and that awesome ability to perform a little tarpology, and open it up into an ideal, open shelter for cooking and chilling at camp, before folding it down enclosed again for bed I cooked chonky lamb steaks on my firebox and hung out with crows and tawny owls Only 2 weeks til Spring officially starts, how exciting! Trying a bit of mesh tent & tarp camping! I decided to use just the mesh inner from my claustrophobic & fairly awkward lil Snugpak Ionosphere for this, leaving the outer fly at home and instead pairing it with a lightweight tarp overhead This turned out to be a perfect combination :D the mesh tent kept the hoards of spiders off me while I slept, so I didn’t need to use a head bug net for a change. And the open tarp formation above, propped up with my trekking poles and sticks, allowed me to see all around me and really feel like I was outside, while still being protected from any rain I had such a beautiful autumn night out! I cooked the most delicious chicken and chorizo baps, slept soundly in the fresh woodland air, and found an amazing skull (which I thought was a badger, but according to my very knowledgeable viewers, is actually a fox!). Boris the Fox has now joined the Dead Gang in my living room, along with my deer, sheep and mountain goat skulls. Very pleased to add a fox to the collection. He has some mean ol’ teeth! This was one of my favourite set-ups, being so open but protected. I’m not sure that it would hold up well in wind, but it was great for a sheltered woodland camp. Gear List

The Day I’m in Love – Anthony Lazaro Waltz for the Dawn – Aren Park I Want To – Livingrooms Losing Streak – Paper Planes Leaves – Roy Dahan Celestial Rhythms – Ariel Dahan All from Artlist with license A Stealthy Den against a Fallen Tree 🍂 Armed with a small tarp, some pegs, cordage, camo netting and a trekking pole, I headed out into the foggy woods to create some kind of shelter against a big fallen tree It wasn’t perfect or invisible, but it was pretty low-key and I had the best time sheltering out of the light rain, watching leaves fall from the trees and spotting deer. I saw two bucks with their majestic antlers, one was a beautiful white boy, which I’d never seen before! And had a cosy night in my autumn nook Typically, this lil woodland has no people wandering around in it, no road noise, but it turns out, it’s right under a flight path instead (there’s always something haha!) So, it’s back to the drawing board with finding a quiet local place to camp. I’m gonna find somewhere one day I just know it! 😬🤞 Gear List

Aves – Rush Hour Narrow Skies – With the Earth American Legion – Reflections Aerian – Zephyr Monument Music – Majestic Whispers All from Epidemic Sound, Artlist & Uppbeat with license It was a windy day in mid October, and I decided to try camping in an old abandoned mining trench, with a tarp for a roof! At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

So, I decided to jump in the car and take a drive up to Northamptonshire, to one of the footpaths that I had walked on that long journey. I had no plan, a small tarp and a bivi bag, and my map showed that there was an open access woodland not too far away, so I headed for that, passing by a big muddy puddle teeming with bugs, but not thinking much of it The woods were beautiful, quiet, all long grass and wildflowers. I’d forgotten my trekking poles so I fashioned a walking stick from a fallen branch and found a lil nook to pop my tarp up and settle down for the night I heated up a home-made chicken curry as the bugs came out. Mozzies and glow worms buzzed about, muntjac barked, pheasants squawked and crows cawed. And then it was dark. I had absolutely no sleep this night, due to three things; 🦉 A persistent squeaky bird that squeaked all. night. long. And I could still hear it through my ear plugs 🔦 Weird bright lights through the trees all night. At first, I thought it was other people, so I turned my own lights off and sat quietly watching, hoping to go unnoticed. But then I realised, there was no sound. Surely if it were people, I would hear them in the quiet of the woods at night, but aside from the godawful squeaky bird, all was eerily silent 🦟 The mozzies, which had already bitten me through my clothes at dusk, and now in the early hours once in my sleeping bag, decided to start attacking my face instead, right through my lil bug net. They tormented me buzzing around my head and the itching was driving me nuts So all in all, this was not the relaxing night out that I had in mind. I’d never experienced the mozzies going for my face so relentlessly before and it’s kinda put me off bivi camping in the summer a bit.. but, it was so lovely to go exploring a bit closer to home and get out of my usual, local woods Hope you’re all having a lovely summer Wild Ones! A new tarp configuration.. apparently it's a variation on a plough point, but I'm calling this one a forest tent. Isn't it the cutest!
This was super simple to set up - just a case of pegging in the back centre point and then lifting the front with the sticks, tensioning with a guy rope and pegging down the front corners I then got to work cooking a beef curry from scratch, made with sirloin steak, and had a lovely sleep in among the trees, waking to light rain showers pitter-pattering on the tarp I even caught some sweet fallow deer on one of my trail cams too! This is a lovely, simple configuration that provides great coverage, and is nice and sheltered due to the back being tapered down to the ground. The spare flappage at the back gets folded under, creating a covered floor area at the rear. You could also hang the front from a ridgeline instead of using sticks. One of my new favs!

Here's a quick how-to for this config..
Ahh a lovely fully enclosed tarp configuration. This one is called the Pyramid. This is a super-simple set up, although I had some trouble initially, as I found that my trekking pole wasn’t quite long enough to erect it, leaving me with a floppy tarp (never a good thing). This pole claims to be 132cm, but I measure it as 125cm fully extended, and 5cm of that is the spike, which just sinks into this kind of ground. So, I decided instead to suspend it from a ridge line, strung between the adjacent trees. This worked really well, and had the added bonus of no pole getting in the way I thought this arrangement looked so pretty in the fading light, and decided to name her Primrose – Primrose the Pyramid. I found that Primrose’s flaps were quite annoying. This formation would be amazing in bad weather, great protection from the elements, but on a dry evening getting in and out, I just kept getting caught up in the flaps I got the fire going and cooked up some delicious sausage and onion baps before settling down for a lovely sleep in the woods I woke to a chorus of birds, a tawny owl and crows, and sat in the doorway of the tarp, wondering if I could modify it somehow. I played around lifting one side and created a new, much more open configuration, and sat to have breakfast with woodland views. I just love how versatile tarps are! Gear List

Just about enough time had passed for me to have forgotten the horrors of the two previous attempts, so it was time for round 3 of Stone Hut with a Tarp. Armed with a bigger tarp, a massive pole and a healthy dose of Being A Stubborn Cow, I took a drenching as I wrestled my 3.5x3.5m multicam over the old slate construction in the wind, shoved a pole up in the middle and hoped for the best Would this be third time lucky.. or another fail? So far, so good. It had taken 1.5 hours to set up the tarp, but it seemed pretty solid. Every guy line was well anchored down with rocks and the pole was working a treat – creating a pitch in the roof so that the water ran straight off instead of pooling on top, and holding the whole thing nice and taught The extra fabric of the larger sized tarp allowed for a sizable flap to come over the doorway – this stopped the rain coming in through the door, and for the first time, it felt relatively dry inside A small tear had already developed on the front where the tarp had ripped on the sharp slate, but other than that, there didn’t seem to be any major issues. I just had to hope that this small tear didn’t turn into oh-dear-my-tarp’s-been-ripped-in-half like the first attempt I changed into my dry clothes and settled down in my sleeping bag for some hot noodles, fully expecting to have to bail at any moment. But the hours ticked by, the wind and the rain continued, and still everything held in place. This was promising, and as bedtime approached and I was still sheltered, I was beginning to feel quietly confident As darkness fell, an occasional gust would come and knock the pole out of place, but it was easy to just pop it back in place. The wind got up and the tarp shook, but still it held fast. I fell asleep sometime after midnight, and woke up as the sky was starting to get light.. somewhat surprised to still have a roof above my head I had done it! A dry(ish) night in the old stone hut. This time around, it had been a brilliant shelter. As I examined the state of things in the morning, I found that bigger rips were forming in the tarp, but none had affected me on this night. This was the lightest tarp I’ve ever used as a shelter – DCF and only 88g. I tried this out on a sort of stop-off camp, when I was on my way somewhere else and had a rucksack full of gear for the next nights camp. This shelter was so light and small, I could have put it in my pocket.. so I was fully expecting it to get ripped in half in the winds. But the lil thing just kept taking it, and made I through the night unscathed. One of my generic guy lines snapped at one point, so I had to lower the back corner, which made for quite a cramped living arrangement. I also accidently pitched under a holy bush but somehow manage to avoid popping my sleeping mat. All-in-all, a pretty chaotic lil camp, but great conditions to test out the tarp in I also made a tiny friend, a sweet little Robin. I didn’t realise he was in most of the footage right up until it got dark, so that was very cute indeed. He most likely was wondering what the maniac human was doing on his turf Gear List

A Fully Enclosed Tarp Set-Up! One of the coolest configurations that I’ve tried so far - so simple, yet practical and versatile too I used my 3.5x3.5m multicam tarp for this, and attached it to a tree, although you could also use a ridgeline. Arranged in this fashion, using a few pegs and cordage, this fully-enclosed set-up provides 3 walls, a full-coverage floor, a door and complete rain protection. I was also able to temporarily open up one side so that I could do some sheltered fire-cooking in the rain (sirloin steak on my firebox – so good!) The headroom is insane in this, loads of space inside too, I think it’s just amazing – a new fav of mine. Not a drop of water came in, despite it raining most of the night.
