DAY 1 I arrived in Eryri prepared for interesting weather, but not knowing that the bad weather system due to come in had actually been named – Storm Bert was approaching. It was a cold and snowy November afternoon as I hauled myself with my heavy winter rucksack up to an open shelf in the mountains, up at around 400m elevation and perched above a Welsh mining town The scene was beautiful; everything sparkly white and snow-covered, the sun shining in a still, blue sky, and the Moelwyns sitting pretty in the distance on the other side of the valley. But my gut told me that this was not a place to stay. This peace and prettiness was deceptive; it was the calm before the storm. A text pinged through from Ash, letting me know that the oncoming storm had been given a name, and to be careful I pondered that when the weather came in up here, surrounded by all this snow and ice, I might find myself in blizzard conditions. The snow hid the ground below it, leaving me unable to tell what I was walking on, or what I would be pitching on. There were small, partially frozen lakes dotted around, and ruined mining buildings. I decided to head back down the mountain. Overnight, the temperature was due to rise. The snow would melt. I’d spend tonight in my car, and head out the next day I drove round to one of my favourite laybys on a quiet, single-track road, made my tea and settled down in my cosy car bed click on 'read more' below to continue the story.. At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

It appears to have worked :D I had such a gorgeous night out in a dry lil umbrella nook, slept for 10 hours! (I had just filmed a night out in a survival shelter the night before, so was glad of the long rest) and I decided to have a dip in the river on the way out – a nice refreshing 13.7°C. Met a lovely grasshopper. It was even dry to set up, and dry to pack away, while getting to listen to the rain for hours overnight- perfection! And now I know that it’s waterproof, I can move on to my next plans for the brolly. Just waiting for a bad enough weather forecast on one of my camping weekends. Almost There – Simon Folwar Awakening - Monument Music Slow Down – Brock Hewitt Your Own World - Sonda All from Uppbeat with license On a chilly evening in July, I headed out to the mountains with Frank to try out another survival shelter – this time it was the Lifesystems 2. I had just my day hiking stuff, so no sleeping bag etc, to see how I’d do with this shelter had I become lost or injured and had to unexpectedly spend a night in the hills Having never had it out before, I was surprised how small it was, especially for a 2-person shelter. However, we both fit in ok squished up (although I have to say, if Frank were bigger and had his own rucksack, this would have been quite a challenge haha!) However, due to the small size and sturdy construction, this thing held in an unbelievable amount of heat. I tested the inside/outside temperatures twice, and both times got a difference of 6 to 7°C, which I think is the biggest temperature difference I’ve ever recorded so far This is a well-made shelter, which is not prone to ripping or tearing unlike the last survival shelter I tried, but it remains light enough to chuck in a day bag at 345g. Frank and I got to try it out in the rain, got eaten alive by midges and had a pretty cosy (ok, cramped) night in this lil thing. Condensation will always be an issue of course, so you’ll still need waterproofs, and no sleep was had due to the uncomfortable conditions, but it kept me perfectly warm with no sleeping bag (very rare for a coldy like me!) and could have saved my life in an actual emergency There’s a window, an air vent, reflective strips, and 2 lil bum-seat areas so that you don’t have to park your rear directly onto wet ground (yay). The bright orange colour is great for attracting attention from bugs mountain rescue. It’s also real simple, not requiring any hanging-from-trees or creating ridgelines; you simply put it over your head and wait out the weather. I imagine it would also be handy for sandwich stops on wet days. It’s deffo my new fav shelter to carry in my day hiking bag I was pretty close to my car for this in case it went wrong – not a good idea to do silly stuff in the mountains without a solid back up plan :) Gear List

I took my DCF tent out for a trial run in the rain and did some chaotic but delicious cooking! It was late April and plenty of rain was forecast, so I took myself out to the woods to have a soggy night out in the Xmid Pro1, just to check it was all sound really before taking it on a longer adventure As it got dark, I started cooking my tea – chicken tikka masala baps. You’d think this would be quite simple really, but I somehow managed to smoke myself out. The food was absolutely delicious though! One of my favourite woodland meals so far (I know I always say that) As I settled down to eat my creation, rain started to fall, just lightly. But it continued all through the night, getting heavier and giving the woods a good drenching. I’d actually never seen these woods so full of water, there are no streams here usually but, on this morning, they had popped up all over the place The tent did very well, a very small amount of manageable condensation but no leaks or other water-related dramas to report on, so I feel confident in taking this out for multi-day trips. I also tried a new bivi bag, this is the Mountain Equipment Ion.. can’t report on how well it works yet, but as soon as I’ve given it a good ol’ WildBeare Torture Test I’ll let you know Gear List

9 Hours in a Survival Shelter.. this was grim! But a real eye-opener It was a sopping wet, rainy day in February and thought I’d see what it would be like to find myself lost in the wild and having to spend an unexpected night out, using only what was in my day-hiking rucksack. For this scenario, I had my usual day hiking bits & bobs.. food, stove, head torch, something to sit on, my down puffy, waterproof pack liner, med kit, hand warmers and an emergency shelter This time my shelter was a ‘Life Tent’ – a tiny lil thing, not much bigger than a drinks can and weighing around 300g. Something that I would chuck into a day pack, probably never think about again and *hopefully* never have to actually use. Trying my £21 tent in the mountains – with my trusty bivi bag of course, as I don’t have a death wish. I’d put this one off for ages as I thought it would be pretty grim.. I was right This was by no means a bad weather test; nothing more than a light rain and some clag, but definitely a step in the wrong direction from the local woodland camp with it last year. I sure noticed a difference in enjoyability haha! Firstly, I’d forgotten how tiny it is. So small that my sleeping mat buckled up when I tried to fit it inside. But, this is a 2-man tent apparently, so I bought me old pal Frank to get a feel for the sizing. Well, it was cramped. I would say ‘cosy’, but the water everywhere kinda negated any cosy vibes Condensation is to be expected in a single skin tent, but the issue with this one is the size, and the fact that there’s no drainage. I was constantly touching the wet sides and hitting my head on the roof. My bivi bag & dry bags were essential, as by the morning, there were actual puddles in the tent, some from where the trapped condensation had pooled, and some had leaked in through the door area (I think) The poles were suspiciously bendy. The lack of vestibule was frustrating, and the tent literally wasn’t long enough for me to lay down in stretched out. My conclusion so far is that this shouldn’t actually be marketed as a tent, but as a gear storage shed. Size-wise, it could be a child tent, but I feel it would be cruel to put a child in it, so I’ll stick with shed The next trip with the shed will likely be the ol’ bad weather test, so hopefully that’ll finish the poor thing off (although I have to say, I will find it pretty funny if it performs really well) In other news, I’ve started training! For something big that I’m gonna try in the summer.. big and entirely different. It’s secret squirrels at the moment, and life so often gets in the way of these things doesn’t it, but I’m hoping I’ll at least get to give it a shot :D If I can, it’ll be the biggest physical challenge of my life so far, so I have lots of preparation to do to get my floppy body good and strong for it. Just about enough time had passed for me to have forgotten the horrors of the two previous attempts, so it was time for round 3 of Stone Hut with a Tarp. Armed with a bigger tarp, a massive pole and a healthy dose of Being A Stubborn Cow, I took a drenching as I wrestled my 3.5x3.5m multicam over the old slate construction in the wind, shoved a pole up in the middle and hoped for the best Would this be third time lucky.. or another fail? So far, so good. It had taken 1.5 hours to set up the tarp, but it seemed pretty solid. Every guy line was well anchored down with rocks and the pole was working a treat – creating a pitch in the roof so that the water ran straight off instead of pooling on top, and holding the whole thing nice and taught The extra fabric of the larger sized tarp allowed for a sizable flap to come over the doorway – this stopped the rain coming in through the door, and for the first time, it felt relatively dry inside A small tear had already developed on the front where the tarp had ripped on the sharp slate, but other than that, there didn’t seem to be any major issues. I just had to hope that this small tear didn’t turn into oh-dear-my-tarp’s-been-ripped-in-half like the first attempt I changed into my dry clothes and settled down in my sleeping bag for some hot noodles, fully expecting to have to bail at any moment. But the hours ticked by, the wind and the rain continued, and still everything held in place. This was promising, and as bedtime approached and I was still sheltered, I was beginning to feel quietly confident As darkness fell, an occasional gust would come and knock the pole out of place, but it was easy to just pop it back in place. The wind got up and the tarp shook, but still it held fast. I fell asleep sometime after midnight, and woke up as the sky was starting to get light.. somewhat surprised to still have a roof above my head I had done it! A dry(ish) night in the old stone hut. This time around, it had been a brilliant shelter. As I examined the state of things in the morning, I found that bigger rips were forming in the tarp, but none had affected me on this night. Ahh, 16 hours in a bivi bag in wind and rain. I imagined that I had lost my tent off a cliff in a gale and had to survive the night in the mountains without it. How would that go, making do with just my emergency lightweight bivi bag for a shelter? I always have one in my rucksack, but usually I’m using it just to protect my sleeping bag from condensation in the tent. With no tent, I intended to find out why it’s so important to carry one of these I expected this to be an utterly grim experience, but actually, it was pretty wonderful. I was fortunate enough to start out in dry conditions with only the wind to contend with, and picked a sweet lil nook among the rocks, where I’d be able to rest propped up and comfortable. I popped up for a quick look at the sunset (one of the most beautiful I’ve seen), and got myself settled into the bag. Rucksack next to me, using the waterproof liner as my storage compartment The rain came and I simply pulled the big rain hood over my head and waited it out. No bother. It felt strange to feel so cosy and warm while laying out in that weather, with the wind booming through the mountains like a freight train And then the wind changed direction and started hitting me head-on.. no longer sheltered by my little nook, it was quite amusing, watching all the random debris of broken grass and twigs flying around in the air As I dozed, sometimes the clouds would part, and I would stir and find myself under a sky of bright, sparkly stars. The wind eased off after midnight, and I slept deeply for 7 hours, waking up to morning rain. Well rested and still warm and dry, the only dislike was having cold hands in the morning. Oh and trying to pack it up in the rain. My sleeping bag was slightly wet on the outside, but not enough to penetrate, and I had survived a bad weather winter night on the mountain, safe and well. It’s nice to know I have this option if SHTF. And it reminds me why I always carry a bivi bag of some kind – this one is 285g that could save my life GEAR LIST

I was so excited to head out in what I assumed was just going to be a standard rainy night, and make a cosy nook under my giant umbrella. This is a 2.2m wide fishing umbrella, but I thought it might make a perfect camping shelter Initial findings were that the plastic D-loop attachment points on the brolly were rubbish, and one of them fell off as soon as I tried the umbrella at home. So, I set about making new attachment points, with metal D-loops and webbing, and sewing them on securely. I replaced the two at the back of the brolly, and the 2 on the flappy side panel bits. And I added x4 new ones across the front of the brolly, in case it needed to be anchored from the front too Now this of course isn’t something you would want to use on a windy night – I’d assume that it would just get smashed to bits, but I figured it would be ok on a fairly still night in sheltered woods. I took a small tarp with me, just in case I needed it I loved setting up my sleep system under the brolly, it felt like being in a cave – nice and sheltered but with gorgeous views out too. However, as the rain started again at night and passing thunderstorms rumbled about, it soon started to leak. Water was coming through all the seams. I chucked my lil tarp over the brolly, which did the trick, but did kind of defeat the object of using the brolly Regardless, I loved this setup. It was one of my favourites. It was heavy to carry in (the brolly alone weighing about 2.6kg, and that’s without the groundsheet and spare tarp that I needed to carry in too. So not overly practical, and I possibly looked a bit of a lunatic walking in with it haha, but there was something about it that I really loved. It was cosy and fun, and it gave me playing-dens-vibes I absolutely loved my first experience of sleeping wild during a thunderstorm. I was camped at low elevation, and the storms were always a few miles away, which is still never entirely safe but considerably safer than being directly under one. I got to relax under my massive brolly and watch the sky light up, and wait for the rumbles while the rain poured. It was just perfection and I feel very lucky to have experienced it Gear List
