My first night out with the X-Dome 1! It was a mildly rainy and windy evening for this one. I was pitched in a nice sheltered spot, but the wind did change direction overnight, letting me test out the option to add trekking poles to support the tent poles. The tent did really well in this (fairly tame) British weather, although I had my doubts about the strength of the thin & lightweight poles, especially with the tent being described on the website as having ‘unprecedented stormworthiness’ Unfortunately, I’ve since taken this tent out to the mountains on a standard breezy mountain day, but then the wind suddenly changed direction, sending crazy winds down a cliff in the direction of my chosen pitch. The crossbar snapped, right after I’d managed to get the first trekking pole in place for support. The poles were bending inward considerably in the wind and also came undone on one side where the wind had pulled them apart Having said that, I do think this is a great tent for fair weather camping, or mild-moderate weather sheltered camping. It is HUGE inside, the head room is great, the colour is great. It’s so light at under 1 kilo – amazing for a double wall shelter. The option to pull back part of the fly, or remove it entirely is fantastic and means you can customise the tent according to conditions on the day and reduce condensation in fair weather. It also pitches all-in-one go, which is great in rain, or just as a mesh inner which is great for a warm summer evening. It did not leak and doesn’t require seam sealing – hurray! I really like it! I just don’t think ‘stormworthy’ is an appropriate description. Especially not for our unhinged UK weather I’ve informed Durston customer service of the issues I had in high wind as I know they’re a company that like to take on board customer experiences and get things fine-tuned. Prices October 2024 when purchased - they may have since changed, and do not include import or customs fees from Canada to UK which were as follows in December 2024; Import VAT £91.25 Customs duty £48.88 Handling fee £8.00 TOTAL £148.13 just to send the tent to the UK DAY 1 I arrived in Eryri prepared for interesting weather, but not knowing that the bad weather system due to come in had actually been named – Storm Bert was approaching. It was a cold and snowy November afternoon as I hauled myself with my heavy winter rucksack up to an open shelf in the mountains, up at around 400m elevation and perched above a Welsh mining town The scene was beautiful; everything sparkly white and snow-covered, the sun shining in a still, blue sky, and the Moelwyns sitting pretty in the distance on the other side of the valley. But my gut told me that this was not a place to stay. This peace and prettiness was deceptive; it was the calm before the storm. A text pinged through from Ash, letting me know that the oncoming storm had been given a name, and to be careful I pondered that when the weather came in up here, surrounded by all this snow and ice, I might find myself in blizzard conditions. The snow hid the ground below it, leaving me unable to tell what I was walking on, or what I would be pitching on. There were small, partially frozen lakes dotted around, and ruined mining buildings. I decided to head back down the mountain. Overnight, the temperature was due to rise. The snow would melt. I’d spend tonight in my car, and head out the next day I drove round to one of my favourite laybys on a quiet, single-track road, made my tea and settled down in my cosy car bed click on 'read more' below to continue the story.. I decided to use just the mesh inner from my claustrophobic & fairly awkward lil Snugpak Ionosphere for this, leaving the outer fly at home and instead pairing it with a lightweight tarp overhead This turned out to be a perfect combination :D the mesh tent kept the hoards of spiders off me while I slept, so I didn’t need to use a head bug net for a change. And the open tarp formation above, propped up with my trekking poles and sticks, allowed me to see all around me and really feel like I was outside, while still being protected from any rain I had such a beautiful autumn night out! I cooked the most delicious chicken and chorizo baps, slept soundly in the fresh woodland air, and found an amazing skull (which I thought was a badger, but according to my very knowledgeable viewers, is actually a fox!). Boris the Fox has now joined the Dead Gang in my living room, along with my deer, sheep and mountain goat skulls. Very pleased to add a fox to the collection. He has some mean ol’ teeth! This was one of my favourite set-ups, being so open but protected. I’m not sure that it would hold up well in wind, but it was great for a sheltered woodland camp. Gear List

The Day I’m in Love – Anthony Lazaro Waltz for the Dawn – Aren Park I Want To – Livingrooms Losing Streak – Paper Planes Leaves – Roy Dahan Celestial Rhythms – Ariel Dahan All from Artlist with license A Stealthy Den against a Fallen Tree 🍂 Armed with a small tarp, some pegs, cordage, camo netting and a trekking pole, I headed out into the foggy woods to create some kind of shelter against a big fallen tree It wasn’t perfect or invisible, but it was pretty low-key and I had the best time sheltering out of the light rain, watching leaves fall from the trees and spotting deer. I saw two bucks with their majestic antlers, one was a beautiful white boy, which I’d never seen before! And had a cosy night in my autumn nook Typically, this lil woodland has no people wandering around in it, no road noise, but it turns out, it’s right under a flight path instead (there’s always something haha!) So, it’s back to the drawing board with finding a quiet local place to camp. I’m gonna find somewhere one day I just know it! 😬🤞 Gear List

Aves – Rush Hour Narrow Skies – With the Earth American Legion – Reflections Aerian – Zephyr Monument Music – Majestic Whispers All from Epidemic Sound, Artlist & Uppbeat with license It was a windy day in mid October, and I decided to try camping in an old abandoned mining trench, with a tarp for a roof! At least I think it was a mining trench.. but regardless, this big ol’ crack in the rock looked to be an interesting place to make a cosy mountain den for the night Wind and hail showers were whipping about the hills as I debated what to do with the tarp. Straight across the top, I figured, and pitched upside-down so that I could anchor it underneath from the centre points too It all came together seamlessly, although there were some interesting tie-outs, including a floor boulder and a nifty attachment around a small lip of rock in the face of the trench. It was holding well to the wind, but I had no idea if it would last out the night. I was also aware that my centre tie-out points, which were performing well against the gusts but had effectively turned the tarp into a shallow bowl shape, might cause it to collect concerning amounts of water. And the trench itself may become a waterlogged puddle too There were many possibilities But, armed with my most trustworthy bivi bag, I settled down for the night snug as a bug, and hoped for the best. The wind ensured that any rain was constantly being flung from the tarp, preventing it from pooling on top. At one point, a huge gust of wind boomed across the hillside, startling me and lifting the tarp. I expected it to be ripped from its pegs, or the guys to snap, but everything held fast. The rest of the night must have been uneventful, as I slept through and woke to a still and almost eerily silent morning On inspection I found the tarp to have done remarkably well. Only one tie-out point had failed; a peg ripped out of the ground – probably during the huge gust. A couple of pegs had bent, but that was the extent of it. So, this random lil camp was a success! That being said, there is great potential for these kinds of things to go catastrophically wrong – always be prepared with a reliable bivi bag, hand warmers, a spare shelter (I like to use a small tarp, which doubles as my ground sheet), food, warm clothing, plenty of light and a back-up plan should things start to go wonky GEAR LIST

This bivi is 1.7 kilos, not light by any means compared to a simple bivi bag, but I thought this might provide a nice, stealthy lil nook for me to spend the night, and I was right! The camo was amazing – it blends so well into the surroundings without the need for my usual camo netting and chucking leaves & twigs all over the place. It was also roomier than I’d anticipated, allowing me to store some bits ‘n bobs and lots of room for me inside my floofy winter bag (the forecast had predicted a chilly 3°C night – pretty cool for September). It’s also super low-profile, so it just disappears behind long grass I had a perfect night out with this! There was a brief rain shower, and I’m glad it was brief as I’ve no idea if the bivi is even waterproof. Deer wandered close to camp with no idea that I was there, one even walking right behind me while I was sleeping. Stars twinkled between the leaves of the big tree that I was settled under, and I woke to a fresh, sunny morning after at least 8 hours of sleep You know when it all just feels so right? It was one of those :) However, I do think it would have been very different if the rain had come in. Being confined inside a zipped-up bivi in bad weather seems to me like a claustrophobic, condensation-ridden hell hole. But I’ll update you on that when I try it haha The end of the pole at the head end also kept popping out, but it wasn’t too much bother And HAPPY AUTUMN! The colours are starting to turn. The nights are getting longer.. I’m so content. Maybe I’m part bat or something but I do love this cosy descent into darkness and cold Gear List

I wanted to think this is really cool but I just can’t get my head around the fact that you still need to bring a raincoat, in addition to your ponchos, because you have to take the ponchos off to erect them as a shelter.. seems a bit pointless really But with that inconvenient issue aside, the two ponchos joined together really easily via zips and velcro. It was a bit faffy getting the shelter up and getting the mesh inner installed but I got there in the end, and got to enjoy a nice lil nook out of the rain with a mesh-enclosed bedroom area Another issue is that it looks like you can only install one mesh inner under the 2 ponchos, so one of you would be out with the bugs in the vestibule area.. although I think I preferred the space inside without the mesh inner installed – a head bug net would suffice to keep the bugs off the important parts I whipped up a delicious pork chow mein for my tea and spent a lovely rainy night in the woods Thank you to Frank for being the second poncho wearer and keeping me company Ps. I’d tried stealth camping close to this road before, hidden in a bit of a divot in the ground, and pulled it off quite successfully, so this time I decided to try it in plain sight instead It was all going a bit wonky from the start.. Firstly, I bought green woodland camo netting, as I was expecting the area to be full of waist-high ferns. However, the ferns were low and sparse, so the green camo was totally the wrong colour. Secondly, there was a red ants next right under where I wanted to run my tarp from a tree in a low plough point configuration that would be easy to blend into the ground. But, not being one to give up easily, I gave it a go anyway, placing the shelter further toward the road, away from the ants, and using a low-ish lean-to configuration, that would be just high enough for me to be able to sit behind it unnoticed, hopefully The camo netting being the wrong colour wasn’t too much of an issue in the end, as the texture of it allowed me to weave sticks into it and hold leaves and debris in place, making it satisfactorily blend into the surrounding colours. Once finished, I felt confident that I wouldn’t be seen by any passing vehicles, but I didn’t feel confident that I would go unnoticed by anyone walking by. But this was a country road with no paths, so I wasn’t expecting people to be walking along it anyway Gear List

It appears to have worked :D I had such a gorgeous night out in a dry lil umbrella nook, slept for 10 hours! (I had just filmed a night out in a survival shelter the night before, so was glad of the long rest) and I decided to have a dip in the river on the way out – a nice refreshing 13.7°C. Met a lovely grasshopper. It was even dry to set up, and dry to pack away, while getting to listen to the rain for hours overnight- perfection! And now I know that it’s waterproof, I can move on to my next plans for the brolly. Just waiting for a bad enough weather forecast on one of my camping weekends. So, I decided to jump in the car and take a drive up to Northamptonshire, to one of the footpaths that I had walked on that long journey. I had no plan, a small tarp and a bivi bag, and my map showed that there was an open access woodland not too far away, so I headed for that, passing by a big muddy puddle teeming with bugs, but not thinking much of it The woods were beautiful, quiet, all long grass and wildflowers. I’d forgotten my trekking poles so I fashioned a walking stick from a fallen branch and found a lil nook to pop my tarp up and settle down for the night I heated up a home-made chicken curry as the bugs came out. Mozzies and glow worms buzzed about, muntjac barked, pheasants squawked and crows cawed. And then it was dark. I had absolutely no sleep this night, due to three things; 🦉 A persistent squeaky bird that squeaked all. night. long. And I could still hear it through my ear plugs 🔦 Weird bright lights through the trees all night. At first, I thought it was other people, so I turned my own lights off and sat quietly watching, hoping to go unnoticed. But then I realised, there was no sound. Surely if it were people, I would hear them in the quiet of the woods at night, but aside from the godawful squeaky bird, all was eerily silent 🦟 The mozzies, which had already bitten me through my clothes at dusk, and now in the early hours once in my sleeping bag, decided to start attacking my face instead, right through my lil bug net. They tormented me buzzing around my head and the itching was driving me nuts So all in all, this was not the relaxing night out that I had in mind. I’d never experienced the mozzies going for my face so relentlessly before and it’s kinda put me off bivi camping in the summer a bit.. but, it was so lovely to go exploring a bit closer to home and get out of my usual, local woods Hope you’re all having a lovely summer Wild Ones!
