💦 In cold water, don’t jump in when unacclimatised (risk of cold shock & potential drowning), work on your tolerance gradually, get a good feel for how your body responds to it and don’t underestimate the after-drop – your body temperature will likely continue to drop for a period of time even after you exit the water and get dressed. Not accounting for this may result in hypothermia post-swim, which, even if mild can cause confusion.. not ideal out in the middle of nowhere ⚠️ It’s good practice to be aware of any bodies of water upstream that could potentially flood into the river that you’re crossing, or swimming in, or camping near. We all know and expect that natural lakes can burst their banks and flood after heavy rain. But certain man-made reservoirs and dams can be particularly risky as the rivers below them cannot be expected to behave in such predictable ways. This river crossing above the gorge for example can be unexpectedly flooded with no warning, even when there has not been heavy rain in recent days. With this type of balance tip dam upstream, unless you’ve actually been to check out the water levels up at the reservoirs, there’s no knowing if or when the water level might reach its tipping point and suddenly be released, and so crossing or entering the river at all is best avoided. Always check your map to see what might be lurking upstream That being said, adventuring and life in general is never risk free. So be aware, be prepared, make sensible-ish decisions and have fun It was early March, and I had arrived toward the western border of Eryri, for my last trip of winter. It was pleasantly mild for the time of year, 14°C.. my perfect hiking temperature! I had 4 days of food with me, my supplies and home on my back, and a thirst for adventure  Day 1 I was on my way to a wide valley surrounded by low peaks, but first I would have to travel across some boggy ground. Still squelchy everywhere from winter wetness, the going was slow, not helped by a gate that I needed to use being in disrepair, and having big ‘ol rusty nails sticking out of it. After straddling the adjoining fence with my huge rucksack on and nearly getting stuck, I eventually I made it on to a track, which was easy going in parts, and in other parts completely flooded and full of lovely frogs After passing a majestic sheep, perched on top of his hay bales and looking like a king with his loyal subjects surrounding him on the ground below, the track led me into the valley, and across a ford, which I stumbled across and gave my nice dry right foot a refreshing dunk into. And then I reached the lake – Llyn Hesgyn. From my position on the track, the area surrounding the lake looked boggy, so I decided to head up the hill next to me to the east, and find a pitch there for my first night The weather was turning. The temperature was dropping and there was light rain in the air. I put on my rain coat and starting trudging upward, following a sunken drystone wall all the way to my first lil summit. I’m not sure what this one is called; my maps says both ‘Craig yr Hafod’ and ‘Cyfiau’, although I’ve no idea if those are just the names of the westerly and easterly slopes, respectively Up by the 534m summit there was a perfect, grassy lil clearing for my tent. From here I could see the peaks on the other side of the valley, where I’d be headed tomorrow. But for now, I just wanted to pitch my tent, get cosy and have my dinner. I’d arrived here for a summer trip in August, in the territory of my nemesis Cnicht, with no route plan, a few days of food and a set of both wet clothes and dry clothes. Once again, I wouldn’t end up having a go at Cnicht, as the weather came in and it just didn’t feel ‘right’.. Cnicht and I have a bit of a history you see; previous trips involving an insane tick attack, a wind-busted tent and a dislocated ankle had all created a general feel of foreboding for the area – the curse of Cnicht. But while this trip didn’t go particularly right, nothing went particularly wrong either, so maybe the curse is broken. Maybe we’re slowly warming to each other. This was such a special occurrence for me, I created a dedicated video focused specifically on the aurora..
Day 1 My Western Rhinogs Adventure – Day 1 In early July, I arrived in the valley of the Afon Artro with a 3-night, 22km trip planned. It was a beautiful warm day, although I carried the burden of a questionable weather forecast and a heavy tent. The regular forecast was a bit mixed but not too bad, whereas MWIS warned of gale force winds, thunder & lightening and torrential downpours. Prepared for the worst just in case, I was hauling my Hille Soulo, which isn’t something I would usually be doing in summer. I had to offset the weight of it by switching some gear around. I really don’t love the weight of this tent, but I do love the peace of mind in case of bad weather I had to cross a section of head-height ferns to reach my first stop – a gorgeous lil waterfall, just off the beaten track. I donned full waterproofs to keep the ticks of my skin and was absolutely roasting by the time I arrived, so the lil pool felt amazing to rest in and fill up on water Next was the ascent of Foel Ddu – a 477m hill where I was hoping to camp for the first night. As I climbed higher, Tremadoc Bay came into view, the sun glistening over the water and the silhouettes of the peaks on the other side of the bay standing against the summer sky. Scrambling over a drystone wall, I came upon the remains of what looked like a plane crash. A quick web search informed me that this was the wreckage of an RAF plane, which came down on Foel Ddu in 1945, sadly taking the lives of all 7 men on board; David Henry Robert Evans Maxwell Walter Moon George Edward William Hodge Charles William Souden Alfred Ernest Oliff Harold Nielsen Arthur David Gash Rest in Peace The views from high on Foel Ddu were quite something, the sea to the west, and the Rhinogs to the east. I pitched at 440m, just down from the summit and out of the worst of the wind, although it was still fairly gusty, and I was glad that I’d carried the sturdy-but-heavy tent. Loving the solitude (I’d not seen another person since parking up in the valley) but unsure of what tomorrow would bring, I settled down for a noisy night of broken sleep as the wind whipped about my lil tent Gear List

It started so well, with both an 18km and a 30km circular route planned (I would decide which to do later on, depending on how my floppy joints did with it all). So with fresh legs, I set off straight into a thoroughly enjoyable scramble up the Afon Ddu gorge I'd had a guided gorge walk here last year, so I was familiar with the route. Although, with my huge rucksack and no ropes or helmet, this time around was more of a poodling-up-the-sides and paddling-across-a-few-pools than a full on gorge walk. Naturally I cautiously made it all the way up to the 'big waterfall'. It was so beautiful here. The gorge walls were steep and high and completely surrounded the falls and the plunge pool, the sun just peeking over the rim of the gorge, and then sinking out of view Aware of the chill I might get in the shade, I had just a quick dunk before heading back down the gorge to the path and continuing on my way. I'd planned to camp on Moel Eilio and had just a few km of what I assumed would be fairly easy hiking I was wrong about that, haha! After the gorge, the path started steep but easy, a track up through Coed Dollgarog. But the track soon turned to nothing, and nothing soon turned to overgrown crazy. Just as I was getting tired out and the sun was disappearing behind the hill, overgrown crazy turned into boggy hell. In my attempt to avoid an obvious, endless bog crossing my way, I had ended up a fair distance onto a 250m wide area of thick, sticky, grass covered mud. The kind you get sucked in and stuck in, like half-set cement This stretch had me reduced to tears.. Balance on wobbly grass tuft Slip Foot gets sucked down Fall over Repeat. When I eventually collapsed, exhausted into my tent on Moel Eilio, rubbing my sore feet, I was questioning my life choices and had an uncomfortable feeling of wanting to go home The moon and stars danced about my tent and Llyn Cowlyd; the deepest lake in North Wales, and my view for the evening. I was meltingg 🫠 (hiking in anything over 14°C usually = melted Beare). But of course, the tumbling river was there to cool me down, and I had a beautiful evening, having a refresher with the tent and trying to figure out why I had a Flappy Front Bit 🤔 The sun set over the hills and Jupiter rose. The lil glowing head torches of the night hikers on the opposite mountain became visible in the dark (can you guess which mountain it is?) It made me feel all warm and cosy inside, wondering who they were and what kind of adventures they were having Gear List

I’d arrived with my big 3.5x3.5 tarp and a plan to make a cosy nook in an old stone hut house in the mountains that I'd found on the map But, I found the lil house half collapsed and worrying that the rest of it might collapse on me during the night, I decided to carry on looking for somewhere else to camp On my way I came across a river, with the water pouring over a rocky overhang like a curtain that you could go behind. I played in the cool water before heading into the forest on the other side of the river The forest was lush and green with patches of bluebells and a chorus of cuckoo. I wasn't exactly sure what to do with my unwieldy and massive tarp, but I managed to erect a nice lean to using a ridge-line and my trekking pokes, with the most beautiful views I settled down for my tea, watched the sun set behind the mountains, and tried out my new gas canister lantern (love it, so cosy!) The sky grew dark around midnight and the stars came out, covering the sky like glitter. I fell into a deep and lovely sleep and woke to the sunlight peeking rounded the tarp and the cuckoo doing its thing I lingered here a while, soaking it all up. The day was warm, and after packing up and hiking down, I crossed the river and found a nice pool to have a proper dunk in before lunch in the sun Gear List
