A night in a busted tent! On two occasions now my tent poles have snapped in wind, both times though (see those here and here), I was only a few kilometres from my car and able to bail. But it got me wondering, what happens if I’m on a multi-night adventure, it’s getting dark, my poles snap and I’m too far away to walk out? (Assuming I don’t have anything to attempt a pole fix with me either, which I often don’t, but I feel like that needs to change and have now ordered a pole repair splint) For this attempt I used my MSR Hubba NX, a neat lil tent but one of the ones that has broken in wind for me in the past. The poles have since been fixed, so I just undid a couple of sections to recreate how it looked when it actually broke. After removing my ‘broken’ poles, I first had a go using my trekking pole to prop it up. This worked so well! I was even able to attach the mesh inner back to the outer using a couple of carabiners that I keep on my rucksack (so handy!) and I had fashioned a sturdy, functional shelter But I felt like this was too easy, and considered that many people don’t carry trekking poles anyway. So I decided to try it without, reducing the tent to a floppy, collapsed shelter, but, still a shelter none-the-less. The night was cool and breezy, dropping down to 1ºC. I had no phone reception but the 60km/ph winds that were forecast on my Garmin did not come to be. It was actually a beautiful night, spent wrapped in the tent with my head poking out, waking up to the sound of a creature walking about (a mountain goat maybe), to find that the clouds had cleared and I was under a sky full of bright, wintery stars Light rain started to fall in the morning, but it was no bother. I’d pull the tent fabric over my head to shelter, and pop out again whenever it stopped. The most inconvenient thing about it all was the tent fabric flapping around in my face while I had to be inside the tent. Condensation might have been an issue if my sleeping bag weren’t protected by my bivi bag, but as it was it just felt a bit damp in there, more of a mild discomfort than a problem All-in-all, a pretty easy first attempt at a night in a busted tent, but I think it might get a bit interesting in worse weather haha, so I’ll try this again in less forgiving conditions and report back. But experimenting with this reassures me that if my tent did indeed get busted up when I was too far out to bail, I’d be absolutely fine. HAPPY SPRING YOU GUYS! It’s finally here. I don’t really enjoy the cramped feel of small shelters like this (Snugpak Ionosphere), but I thought that being such a small space, it might retain heat better than a bigger hiking tent. I was right! During the night I was surprised to find about 5-and-a-half °C of temperature difference between outside and inside the tent. This is similar to what I’ve experienced with my Hille in freezing conditions in the past, so, very impressive This was a totally beautiful night! Big mountain views of an icy Yr Wyddfa, a pastel sunset, and a starry sky including our winter friend Orion, various planets, Pleiades and our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda too. I didn’t sleep very well (the ground wasn’t quite right), but that meant that I got to watch lots of tiny lights climbing the mountain, followed by a frosty, pink sunrise. Shoutout to anyone who night-climbed Snowdon and watched the sun rise from his summit on February 1st, I was watching you! In a non-creepy way haha As excited as I am for spring and to feel a little heat from the sun, this winter has actually been a real treat so far. I’ve had lots of cold, pretty nights out, compared to last winter which was mild and wet as hell. Apologies to the bad-weather lovers though, I didn’t get much of it over summer and now winter has been kind to me as well, but rest assured I have plenty of plans for wet & wild antics when I get the weather for it on my free weekends GEAR LIST

It was the day after I’d had a tent break in the wind, and I returned to the same area with a very similar forecast, this time armed with my Hille. Typically, the wind died down and there was no need for such a hardcore tent, but I was unexpectedly treated to one of the most beautiful camps! I pitched on an open, rock-scattered plateau up at 400 metres. The stars came out during the cold night, I slept deeply and I unzipped the tent in the morning to see clouds flowing down the nearby cliffs, billowing out into the open expanse behind me The waves flowed for hours and were absolutely mesmerising. It was like a giant waterfall, but made of cloud. A cloudfall. I’ll never forget it GEAR LIST

Rover is a Land Rover Freelander 2 just like Landy, but he’s a bit younger, currently 13 years old. Similar to Landy he also already had over 100k on the clock when I bought him, but I’m hoping he’ll do me a few years For my bed I’m using a slab of upholstery foam cut to size, a single sheet, pillows & duvet. This whole bed folds up to fit neatly into the boot. I’m also in a sleeping bag for this one because it was cold, and cars can get pretty chilly in the winter. This was a lovely experience in the snow, my coldest car sleep yet but I was nice and toasty in there with my hand warmer on the go! I use window guards to stop rain (or in this case snow) coming in the windows, while allowing me ventilation throughout the night, and I have lil car window nets for privacy Rover is really cosy and I reckon he’ll be a perfect lil retreat for those camps-gone-wrong that I have to bail. I like to keep my car stocked with dry clothes, hand warmers, shovel, towel, head torch, med kit and snacks This ended up being a shorter trip than I’d anticipated due to the road conditions and my fear of sliding off the road and down a cliff, but I managed a quick and bitterly cold stop off at the high pass of Bwlch y Groes before the snow came in, looking out over the icy Arans. It was a mildly rainy and windy evening for this one. I was pitched in a nice sheltered spot, but the wind did change direction overnight, letting me test out the option to add trekking poles to support the tent poles. The tent did really well in this (fairly tame) British weather, although I had my doubts about the strength of the thin & lightweight poles, especially with the tent being described on the website as having ‘unprecedented stormworthiness’ Unfortunately, I’ve since taken this tent out to the mountains on a standard breezy mountain day, but then the wind suddenly changed direction, sending crazy winds down a cliff in the direction of my chosen pitch. The crossbar snapped, right after I’d managed to get the first trekking pole in place for support. The poles were bending inward considerably in the wind and also came undone on one side where the wind had pulled them apart Having said that, I do think this is a great tent for fair weather camping, or mild-moderate weather sheltered camping. It is HUGE inside, the head room is great, the colour is great. It’s so light at under 1 kilo – amazing for a double wall shelter. The option to pull back part of the fly, or remove it entirely is fantastic and means you can customise the tent according to conditions on the day and reduce condensation in fair weather. It also pitches all-in-one go, which is great in rain, or just as a mesh inner which is great for a warm summer evening. It did not leak and doesn’t require seam sealing – hurray! I really like it! I just don’t think ‘stormworthy’ is an appropriate description. Especially not for our unhinged UK weather I’ve informed Durston customer service of the issues I had in high wind as I know they’re a company that like to take on board customer experiences and get things fine-tuned. It was the 1st of March and armed with a pretty grim forecast as usual, I expected this to be another godawful-weather-ordeal so I didn’t even plan any kind of route, thinking I would be hunkering down in the forest all weekend. But instead, I was granted cold starry nights, clear skies, silence, snowy mountain views and babbling brooks surrounded by evergreens. But a real eye-opener It was a sopping wet, rainy day in February and thought I’d see what it would be like to find myself lost in the wild and having to spend an unexpected night out, using only what was in my day-hiking rucksack. For this scenario, I had my usual day hiking bits & bobs.. food, stove, head torch, something to sit on, my down puffy, waterproof pack liner, med kit, hand warmers and an emergency shelter This time my shelter was a ‘Life Tent’ – a tiny lil thing, not much bigger than a drinks can and weighing around 300g. Something that I would chuck into a day pack, probably never think about again and *hopefully* never have to actually use. Trying my £21 tent in the mountains – with my trusty bivi bag of course, as I don’t have a death wish. I’d put this one off for ages as I thought it would be pretty grim.. I was right This was by no means a bad weather test; nothing more than a light rain and some clag, but definitely a step in the wrong direction from the local woodland camp with it last year. I sure noticed a difference in enjoyability haha! Firstly, I’d forgotten how tiny it is. So small that my sleeping mat buckled up when I tried to fit it inside. But, this is a 2-man tent apparently, so I bought me old pal Frank to get a feel for the sizing. Well, it was cramped. I would say ‘cosy’, but the water everywhere kinda negated any cosy vibes Condensation is to be expected in a single skin tent, but the issue with this one is the size, and the fact that there’s no drainage. I was constantly touching the wet sides and hitting my head on the roof. My bivi bag & dry bags were essential, as by the morning, there were actual puddles in the tent, some from where the trapped condensation had pooled, and some had leaked in through the door area (I think) The poles were suspiciously bendy. The lack of vestibule was frustrating, and the tent literally wasn’t long enough for me to lay down in stretched out. My conclusion so far is that this shouldn’t actually be marketed as a tent, but as a gear storage shed. Size-wise, it could be a child tent, but I feel it would be cruel to put a child in it, so I’ll stick with shed The next trip with the shed will likely be the ol’ bad weather test, so hopefully that’ll finish the poor thing off (although I have to say, I will find it pretty funny if it performs really well) In other news, I’ve started training! For something big that I’m gonna try in the summer.. big and entirely different. It’s secret squirrels at the moment, and life so often gets in the way of these things doesn’t it, but I’m hoping I’ll at least get to give it a shot :D If I can, it’ll be the biggest physical challenge of my life so far, so I have lots of preparation to do to get my floppy body good and strong for it. This one is called the Pyramid. This is a super-simple set up, although I had some trouble initially, as I found that my trekking pole wasn’t quite long enough to erect it, leaving me with a floppy tarp (never a good thing). This pole claims to be 132cm, but I measure it as 125cm fully extended, and 5cm of that is the spike, which just sinks into this kind of ground. So, I decided instead to suspend it from a ridge line, strung between the adjacent trees. This worked really well, and had the added bonus of no pole getting in the way I thought this arrangement looked so pretty in the fading light, and decided to name her Primrose – Primrose the Pyramid. I found that Primrose’s flaps were quite annoying. This formation would be amazing in bad weather, great protection from the elements, but on a dry evening getting in and out, I just kept getting caught up in the flaps I got the fire going and cooked up some delicious sausage and onion baps before settling down for a lovely sleep in the woods I woke to a chorus of birds, a tawny owl and crows, and sat in the doorway of the tarp, wondering if I could modify it somehow. I played around lifting one side and created a new, much more open configuration, and sat to have breakfast with woodland views. I just love how versatile tarps are! Gear List

Just about enough time had passed for me to have forgotten the horrors of the two previous attempts, so it was time for round 3 of Stone Hut with a Tarp. Armed with a bigger tarp, a massive pole and a healthy dose of Being A Stubborn Cow, I took a drenching as I wrestled my 3.5x3.5m multicam over the old slate construction in the wind, shoved a pole up in the middle and hoped for the best Would this be third time lucky.. or another fail? So far, so good. It had taken 1.5 hours to set up the tarp, but it seemed pretty solid. Every guy line was well anchored down with rocks and the pole was working a treat – creating a pitch in the roof so that the water ran straight off instead of pooling on top, and holding the whole thing nice and taught The extra fabric of the larger sized tarp allowed for a sizable flap to come over the doorway – this stopped the rain coming in through the door, and for the first time, it felt relatively dry inside A small tear had already developed on the front where the tarp had ripped on the sharp slate, but other than that, there didn’t seem to be any major issues. I just had to hope that this small tear didn’t turn into oh-dear-my-tarp’s-been-ripped-in-half like the first attempt I changed into my dry clothes and settled down in my sleeping bag for some hot noodles, fully expecting to have to bail at any moment. But the hours ticked by, the wind and the rain continued, and still everything held in place. This was promising, and as bedtime approached and I was still sheltered, I was beginning to feel quietly confident As darkness fell, an occasional gust would come and knock the pole out of place, but it was easy to just pop it back in place. The wind got up and the tarp shook, but still it held fast. I fell asleep sometime after midnight, and woke up as the sky was starting to get light.. somewhat surprised to still have a roof above my head I had done it! A dry(ish) night in the old stone hut. This time around, it had been a brilliant shelter. As I examined the state of things in the morning, I found that bigger rips were forming in the tarp, but none had affected me on this night. As far as I was concerned, this was a success, and I was glad that I had come back to try again Thank you for having me, Stone Hut! It’s been both horrendous and wonderful Gear List
