Giant Umbrella Stealth Den

​It was time to dust of my old friend – the Giant Leaky Umbrella
​
This time for a stealth camp. I just love the dome-like space under this umbrella, and thought it would make a perfect frame to build a stealth den for the night

There was some rain and wind forecast for the next morning, so my first job was to anchor it down as securely as I could, and make it waterproof (gotta love an umbrella that isn’t actually waterproof!) Being an umbrella, it is of course the prefect shape to get whipped away by a gust of wind, so I guyed it down from all of my modded attachment points, and from the middle point at the back. I then clipped my real light, DCF tarp over the top of it to make it waterproof.
Next came the camo netting, followed by leaves and sticks, until my lil den just looked like a big pile of woodland stuff. From above, it was nearly invisible, however from the ground you could still make out the dome-like structure.

I messed up a bit, because by building the den with the doorway facing away from the wind, I had unwittingly set it up with the doorway instead facing a small path, pretty close by that I didn’t know was there. So, I hoped for the best that no one would come along

I got my lil nook all set up inside and settled down to make my most delicious camping meal yet. I cooked lamb chops in garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper, and then fried up some pre-cooked rice in the meat juices. A lil weevil friend walked around the rim of my pot over and over and over, and I snuggled down for a lovely sleep in the woods

I woke to gusts of wind, followed by the pitter-patter of rain on my shelter. It felt real cosy, and as I sat and had my breakfast, the weather really came in, with a random and short-lived mini rain storm. My lil shelter held fast in some pretty strong gusts of wind and was a lovely way to spend a night in the woods
