A lovely night in the woods in my baker style tent - the One Tigris Backwards Bungalow. I cooked up a delicious dinner on the firebox; smoky sausages with smoky paprika and parsley mash and gravy. Had to evict more spiders than I would have liked but had a lazy morning of relaxing in heavy rain and spotting deer. The tent was a little leaky, but I loved the foresty, bushcrafty vibes, it kinda felt like camping out under a tarp with a tent at the back. I woke up to a big drooping bulge where the water had collected and pooled on the front section, so propped it up with sticks to create a pitch Gear lIst

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it, but started by hanging the middle tie-out point from a ridgeline between two evergreens, making use of the surrounding foliage for camouflage I kept securing different points until I’d created a sort of floating cube shape, which I then pegged into the ground, covered with looooads of camo netting, leaves, twigs and moss to blend it in as much as I could I really loved it. It wasn’t the stealthiest that I’ve ever made, but it was good enough, and inside was huge! It had such den vibes, and I had a beautiful night in the woods, cooking meat on my firebox and hanging out with all the small critters After a long sleep and bacon baps, a thunderstorm rolled in with rain and loud rumbles and booms. It was a really wonderful camp and it felt kind of a shame to pack it away Gear List

Early in July I had a beautiful night out in the woods, trying the KL-94, a Dutch ex-military canvas tent from the early 90’s. Apparently, things from the early 90’s can now be classed as vintage, but I can’t quite get my head around being old enough for that to be the case haha! I loved this tent! It had a thick rubbery floor, heavy fabric walls and chonky metal poles and stakes. I bought a big ol’ vintage mallet and had a bit too much fun swinging that around. I also bought in a 24Hr Dutch ration pack, which was actually quite delicious! I had a lovely night out munching my way through that, trying to avoid getting eaten alive by the bugs, and admiring a munty caught on my trail cam just behind the tent This is a really heavy shelter - about 6.5 kilos, so not one I'd want to carry in in a rucksack. It was so dark inside the tent, that I slept for 9 hours in mid summer! I’m not sure how this would perform in rain, but I will take it out in some wet weather in future and let you know Gear List

I had my sleeping bag in a bivi bag just in case of rain (that would have been interesting) but it stayed nice and dry It had recently been St George’s Day and VE day so I bought a nice English picnic for this one! I arrived on a moody April afternoon with my small tarp and was a little unsure what to do with it, but I concocted a weird lil shelter inside the stone walls that was just perfect for keeping off the gentle rain. I even had my own personal back garden tap (a spring just behind the building), a visit from a lovely newt, and 8 hours solid sleep.. bliss *Do be careful with old man-made structures. Some of these further down the line I wouldn't have trusted due to the hill behind encroaching on them and making the walls bent and unstable. This one was further from the hill and remained nice and square and solid. I would personally avoid old structures with their roofs still on too, as the roof is the first thing to go. I do enjoy this kind of camping but give each structure a lil risk assessment and obviously if you feel like there's any real risk of it collapsing, stay away from it GEAR LIST

I’d decided to go out for a stealth with my lovely, second-hand British Military Bivi. Then I decided to get myself a 24hr ration pack to go with it. And then I thought, why not head out to an area fairly near an army base to see if I could go 24hrs undetected. So it kinda turned into this army-themed thing I settled down half a km from the base in public woodland, with it just in view through the trees. I was a sensible distance away so that aspect of my endeavour was kind of a non-issue, but the woods on this warm April day were absolutely teeming with people and dogs So, I would be hoping to go unnoticed by using my low-profile, camo shelter, being quiet, staying low and not moving around too much I really loved this one, getting to test out my stealth skills (I do love to hide!), munching my way through my first ration pack (although there was way too much for me to eat within 24hrs in there), and being entertained by the lovely doggos running about This was a simple night out. Under the trees. Under the moon. Listening to the birds and the Muntjac. I didn’t even bring my usual night-time filming lights, only using the red light on my head torch for this one, in the hopes that I wouldn’t be seen. I had a nice sleep, feeling stealthy and hidden and kept everything crossed that the morning doggos wouldn’t decide to alert their owners to my presence GEAR LIST

💦 In cold water, don’t jump in when unacclimatised (risk of cold shock & potential drowning), work on your tolerance gradually, get a good feel for how your body responds to it and don’t underestimate the after-drop – your body temperature will likely continue to drop for a period of time even after you exit the water and get dressed. Not accounting for this may result in hypothermia post-swim, which, even if mild can cause confusion.. not ideal out in the middle of nowhere ⚠️ It’s good practice to be aware of any bodies of water upstream that could potentially flood into the river that you’re crossing, or swimming in, or camping near. We all know and expect that natural lakes can burst their banks and flood after heavy rain. But certain man-made reservoirs and dams can be particularly risky as the rivers below them cannot be expected to behave in such predictable ways. This river crossing above the gorge for example can be unexpectedly flooded with no warning, even when there has not been heavy rain in recent days. With this type of balance tip dam upstream, unless you’ve actually been to check out the water levels up at the reservoirs, there’s no knowing if or when the water level might reach its tipping point and suddenly be released, and so crossing or entering the river at all is best avoided. Always check your map to see what might be lurking upstream That being said, adventuring and life in general is never risk free. So be aware, be prepared, make sensible-ish decisions and have fun It was early March, and I had arrived toward the western border of Eryri, for my last trip of winter. It was pleasantly mild for the time of year, 14°C.. my perfect hiking temperature! I had 4 days of food with me, my supplies and home on my back, and a thirst for adventure  Day 1 I was on my way to a wide valley surrounded by low peaks, but first I would have to travel across some boggy ground. Still squelchy everywhere from winter wetness, the going was slow, not helped by a gate that I needed to use being in disrepair, and having big ‘ol rusty nails sticking out of it. After straddling the adjoining fence with my huge rucksack on and nearly getting stuck, I eventually I made it on to a track, which was easy going in parts, and in other parts completely flooded and full of lovely frogs After passing a majestic sheep, perched on top of his hay bales and looking like a king with his loyal subjects surrounding him on the ground below, the track led me into the valley, and across a ford, which I stumbled across and gave my nice dry right foot a refreshing dunk into. And then I reached the lake – Llyn Hesgyn. From my position on the track, the area surrounding the lake looked boggy, so I decided to head up the hill next to me to the east, and find a pitch there for my first night The weather was turning. The temperature was dropping and there was light rain in the air. I put on my rain coat and starting trudging upward, following a sunken drystone wall all the way to my first lil summit. I’m not sure what this one is called; my maps says both ‘Craig yr Hafod’ and ‘Cyfiau’, although I’ve no idea if those are just the names of the westerly and easterly slopes, respectively Up by the 534m summit there was a perfect, grassy lil clearing for my tent. From here I could see the peaks on the other side of the valley, where I’d be headed tomorrow. But for now, I just wanted to pitch my tent, get cosy and have my dinner. This first night was uneventful and dark, the clouds blocking any views of the night sky, and I warmed up my tea – a homecooked chicken curry and settled down for the night Click on 'read more' below to continue the adventure..
