Lifesystems 2 SURVIVAL shelter - My Thoughts
On a chilly evening in July, I headed out to the mountains with Frank to try out another survival shelter – this time it was the Lifesystems 2. I had just my day hiking stuff, so no sleeping bag etc, to see how I’d do with this shelter had I become lost or injured and had to unexpectedly spend a night in the hills
Having never had it out before, I was surprised how small it was, especially for a 2-person shelter. However, we both fit in ok squished up (although I have to say, if Frank were bigger and had his own rucksack, this would have been quite a challenge haha!)
But due to the small size and sturdy construction, this thing held in an unbelievable amount of heat. I tested the inside/outside temperatures twice, and both times got a difference of over 6°C, which I think is the biggest temperature difference I’ve ever recorded so far
This is a well-made shelter, which is not prone to ripping or tearing unlike the last survival shelter I tried, but it remains light enough to chuck in a day bag at 345g. Frank and I got to try it out in the rain, got eaten alive by midges and had a pretty cosy (ok, cramped) night in this lil thing. Condensation will always be an issue of course, so you’ll still need waterproofs, and no sleep was had due to the uncomfortable conditions, but it kept me perfectly warm with no sleeping bag (very rare for a coldy like me!) and could have saved my life in an actual emergency
There’s a window, an air vent, reflective strips, and 2 lil bum-seat areas so that you don’t have to park your rear directly onto wet ground (yay). The bright orange colour is great for attracting attention if you're in a dire situation & awaiting rescue. It’s also real simple, not requiring any hanging-from-trees or creating ridgelines; you simply put it over your head and wait out the weather. I imagine it would also be handy for sandwich stops on wet days. It’s deffo my new fav emergency shelter to carry in my day hiking bag
I was pretty close to my car for this in case it went wrong – not a good idea to do silly stuff in the mountains without a solid back up plan :)

My THoughts
My first DCF tent! (Dyneema Composite Fabric) Just 485g.. kinda crazy! I was hoping to find something a bit stealthier, maybe a camo DCF tent, but I wasn’t able to find anything in those kinda colours. So, I decided to go with the Durston X-mid, as I’ve been very impressed with the heavier non-pro version
I really liked this tent but more importantly, my floppy joints will really enjoy the weight of it. I’m hoping to do some longer trips soon now that spring is (apparently) here and providing the weather will (please) warm up enough for me to carry a lighter sleeping bag, I’ll be feeling light as a feather :D ..pure joy after hauling 18kg on my back all winter
This single skin tent is so easy to pitch – just peg out the 4 corners, insert the trekking poles and you’re good to go. Optional guy lines can be attached if it’s windy, but are not necessary to erect the tent. You can buy this tent with either a silnylon floor, or a DCF floor. I opted for silnylon, as I’ve previously put a load of holes in my DCF tarp by using it as a ground sheet. DCF may be strong, but it has no ‘give’ in it and in my experience, it punctures easily. The silnylon floor adds 45g to the tent (440g with the DCF floor or 485g with the silnylon floor)
I really enjoyed how the tent is kinda transparent – I could see and feel the sun shining through, see the rain drops sliding down the fabric of the tent and the outlines of the surrounding hills and mountains. It appears to be well made, with heat-sealed seams (no seam sealing required, hurray!) and I’m confident in the construction of it, having previously given the non-pro version a bad weather testing, which is the same shape and uses the same ‘principles of geometry’. There are two large pockets inside. The 2 vestibules are huge, the head room is awesome and it just feels like a nice place to hang out.
Drawbacks so far that I’ve noticed – the magnetic door closures don’t hold the doors open in wind. I had this same issue on the non-pro version, the magnets just aren’t strong enough to compete with gusty wind. Also, it’s bright in there.. while I enjoyed the see-through aspect, this could be problematic for sleeping – you’ll need a good eye mask. The floor is real thin, but this is to be expected with a super lightweight tent. I’m using it with its dedicated ground sheet for an extra layer of protection. I couldn’t see anywhere to hang a light from, but it was no issue to place my light into one of the interior pockets, or hang it from the wrist strap of one of my trekking poles. As with all DCF tents, it has a screwed-up-carrier-bag appearance, but I didn’t find it to be particularly noisy (except when the open doors come undone from the magnetic tabs and start flapping around haha)
As usual, there are not enough pegs included with the tent to cover all eventualities. It comes with x4 16g 8” DAC stakes for the tent corners, and x4 7g 6” DAC stakes for guy lines. However, you might also want additional pegs, for pitching out the door flap when sitting with the door open, or for pegging down the side panels of the tent.
The tent retained barely half a degree of heat compared to outside, but this is not an issue as I bought it specifically for summer trips. It can feel breezy inside, but this can be improved by pitching the tent lower to the ground (this will in turn of course massively increase condensation). Unless breezy and well ventilated, condensation will be an issue as it is with all single-skin shelters, so always bring something to clean it up with, and use a bivi bag over your sleeping bag.
I’ll be trying this tent on a rainy night soon and I’m looking forward to taking it out on a longer hike!

My Thoughts
This was the lightest tarp I’ve ever used as a shelter – DCF and only 88g. I tried this out on a sort of stop-off camp, when I was on my way somewhere else and had a rucksack full of gear for the next nights camp. This shelter was so light and small, I could have put it in my pocket.. so I was fully expecting it to get ripped in half in the winds. But the lil thing just kept taking it, and made it through the night unscathed
One of my guy lines snapped at one point, so I had to lower the back corner, which made for quite a cramped living arrangement. I also accidently pitched under a holly bush but somehow managed to avoid popping my sleeping mat. And unwittingly filled a boot with rain water. All-in-all, a pretty chaotic lil camp, but great conditions to test out the tarp in
I also made a tiny friend, a sweet little Robin. I didn’t realise he was in most of the footage right up until it got dark, so that was very cute indeed. He most likely was wondering what the maniac human was doing on his turf

My Thoughts
Ooh, I do love bad-weather testing tents! On this December day, it was the turn of the Durston X-Mid 1 to get a good seeing to. I was pretty sceptical of my flimsy-looking shelter and was fully prepared for a potential surviving-the-night-in a-ruined-tent type of situation.
However, to my surprise, none of that happened.
The afternoon started with standard Welsh weather, nothing fancy.. 21km/hr gusts and rain. The tent went up easily and I settled down for the night, bracing for the coming gales that were forecast for the next day.
The tent took the weather like a champ all night. I found that the magnetic door toggles don't hold the doors open in strong wind, so I needed to use a clip when cooking etc - just a minor issue. And a bit of rain water sprayed in occasionally via one of the vents, but after closing them, I woke in the morning dry and well rested.
The winds continued to increase, and on that rocky outcrop in front of the tent, I measured gale-force 65km/hr gusts. However, the gusts by the tent just a few meters away were not quite as severe, being blocked slightly by the rock. The tent was, however, still taking near-gales (I measured 59km/hr next to it), with no issue whatsoever. I didn't even have to use the Delta pegs or stronger guy lines that I'd bought
Curious, I unpegged the guy lines to see what would happen. This is a tent that doesn’t require guy lines to hold it up – it’s certainly the only trekking pole tent that I’ve tried that calls guys ‘optional’..
Free of the guys, the tent swayed and shook in the high winds, but still did not budge. The poles stayed exactly in place. Nothing broke. Nothing fell down. Nothing happened at all aside from some flapping polyester.
I still have an inconvenient dislike of the non-stealthy colour of this tent. And these wind speeds, in my mind, still do not constitute being able to confirm if it is “stormworthy” or not.. but damn, did this impress me, and it is definitely bad-weather-worthy. Which I did not expect.

Merch! Wild Stuff for your Wild Self
My Thoughts
A night out under my poncho.. except this one turns into a tent! Well, sort of. The poncho becomes the fly, and the arm holes become the vents. You can use it like this, just as it is, like a lil tarp-type open shelter. Or, you can stick the matching mesh tent underneath it to create a bug-proof tent thing.
It all seems pretty damn cool, and it’s a fun concept. But I still can’t get my head around these poncho shelters.
First off, you still need to wear a rain coat, for two reasons. The sleeves are far too short to keep your arms dry. And then there’s that familiar poncho-shelter-problem.. if it’s raining, you’re going to get wet when you have to take off the poncho to erect it as a shelter. So, you end up just wearing it over your raincoat, which in my opinion defeats the object of it being a multi-purpose piece of gear.
Pitching this inner first would be a bad idea in rain, as it would just fill up with water. So, I tried to pitch it fly-first, which I found a bit faffy. But it was my first time and I guess I’d be better at it now that I know how it all works
I felt so cosy in this with my lil lantern glowing, enjoying a tasty home cooked chicken tikka masala and listening to the owls and the crows. I tried a mini hot water bottle for this camp, which I found to be a less effective method for warming myself than my electronic hand warmers. The lil hot water bottle only stayed warm 2-3 hours, compared to my handwarmer which chucks out heat all night long. The handwarmer, although I consider it heavy, is considerably lighter than a hot water bottle plus the extra water I had to carry in to fill it with
I settled down for the night, and slept so soundly that I didn’t wake up at all as the rain started coming through the front mesh. By morning the floor was soggy, and my pillow was damp. Not really an issue as I always use a bivi bag, but could become a bit of an annoyance, particularly if you are to be out for more than one night. There's also no vestibule, so everything has to be in the 1-person sleeping space with you, or else shoved under the fly
All that being said, I loved camping with this. I loved the colour and how discrete it was. I loved the ‘feel’ of it.. it felt woodlandly and lovely. Not the most technical terms, but you know what I mean, it felt nice and I felt at home in it. I’ve come to realise that I am such a lover of going unnoticed, that I prefer to camp in a stealthy shelter that lets a bit of water in, than a noticeable shelter that stays totally dry inside
This seems to be well made too, with taped seams, to stop the rain from leaking through the roof (while it comes straight in through the front mesh instead haha!) I do think the poncho fly would make an excellent emergency or lunch shelter for summer hiking though. And, apparently you can join two of these ponchos together, to create a tipi tent! Walking into the woods wearing two ponchos just sounds too wonderfully ridiculous, so I’ll definitely be trying that at some point

My Thoughts
I got me a new tent! ⛺️ First night out with my Durston X-Mid 1
The video for this one is a bit of a weird mish-mash, between being a first-look-new-tent video as intended, and then some oh-god-there's-someone-lurking-over-there kinda stuff that I wasnt planning on
So firstly, the tent. I got this as I love my lightweight Lanshans, but they have caused me some bother.. namely, being pretty rubbish in bad weather
But this tent claims to be both light and 'stormworthy'.. a bold claim indeed, but amazing if it actually is.
The geometery-based design is quite unique, making it far studier than you'd expect - you don't even need to use guy lines. The biggest downside for me is the colour.. I feel obvious and noticeable in it, which is a shame, as I much prefer to blend in.
This first look was a cold, fair weather autumn camp. There was an unnerving experience in the middle when, due to unknowingly pitching close to a tiny path which was hidden by fallen leaves, a person strolled behind my tent at dusk, and then decided to lurk around a while, hanging around and investigating my camp from a distance. As soon as he left I chucked my stuff back into my rucksack and got the hell outta there, walking by the light of the moon to an old trusty spot (which was really hard to find in the dark haha), where I've never been seen before and I felt safe. Give me weird nature noises and spooky tales any day, but other people are my worst fear in the woods.
Camping in a very visible tent reminded why I like to stealth camp with tarps and camo netting 'n all that jazz
Video coming tonight at 7pm GMT over at youtube.com/wildbeare
Bad weather test coming soon 😀 spoiler - it did remarkably well! I was very impressed. But as for the 'stormworthy' thing.. that remains to be seen

MY HAPPY HELPER
(Frank) https://amzn.to/3s4b5Hi
My THoughts
Ahh, a night in the wind and rain in a Dinky Lil Tent
This is the Snugpak Ionosphere, and I thought it would be fun to try it out in a nice exposed spot and see what it’s made of. First you notice that it pitches inner first, which wasn’t an issue for this camp as it wasn’t raining when I pitched the tent. But pitching an inner first tent in rain is always a bit dodgy as the inner can fill up with water
The tent was easy to set up and I soon had all my gear inside, and my happy helper Frank to assist. Snugpak call this a one-person shelter, which will take 2 in an emergency. As you can see, it takes 2 people, but it’s a bit romantic. You’ll never get 2 mats in it, but it could provide shelter for 2 in a life-threatening situation
I found camping with this tent a bit annoying. There’s no vestibule of course, so no shelter for cooking, or to store your rucksack or boots (which I kept between the inner and the fly). You can’t sit up in it unless you sit in the doorway with the door open, which obviously isn’t an option in rain. And when you are confined inside because of rain, it’s cramped as hell. My usually neatly arranged possessions were all over the place and I ended up with a sore neck from all the contorting in the tiny space.
But, to sleep in, it was just fine. It makes a great stealth shelter being only 75cm high, and for once, there were no leaky seams. Not even any condensation due to the wind. I measured gusts of up to 37km/hr but had no concerns in this lil bad boy, as it’s so low profile with a small surface area, this kinda wind was no issue for it at all. It kept me safe and dry, and I found it to be very good at being what it is ~ a very tiny tent. If you like that kinda thing.
The stars shone between rain showers and I woke to the most beautiful sunny morning in the mountains, a real treat after the cramped rainy night

My Thoughts
A lil camp using superlight gear; the 'Big 3' tent, sleeping bag and mat all coming in at under 1.5kg! Which is the lightest I've ever tried, but, the mat broke as soon as I lay on it
Here's what I used and a brief summary of my thoughts on these 3 items:
🏕 TENT Lanshan Pro 1 690g
Great in good weather. My pole was stuck in the collapsed position so I had to use a stick instead, but this actually worked just fine. Not sure what I would do in this situation in the mountains with no sticks around. Not so good in wet weather. Seam sealing can be tricky, sags a lot when wet, unforgiving of a bad pitch and human error
🏕 BAG Sea To Summit Spark II 490g
Love it so far! Kept me lovely and warm in 12/13°C. Think this might be perfect for my warm weather multi-night trips. Soo tiny and compact when compressed
🏕 MAT Thermarest Neoair Uberlight 250g
Broke internally at the head end as soon as I put weight on it. Wouldn't trust it at all out in the wild, or anywhere actually. In my opinion, not worth the 120g weight saving on the Xlite - I sent it back for a refund

Hilleberg Soulo Bad Weather Test! 60km/h Winds and Heavy Rain in the Mountains
Gear LIst - Bad Weather Mountain Camp
Merch - Wild Stuff for your Wild Self
My Thoughts
I took my Hilleberg Soulo into the mountains to give it a good test in wind and rain and the weather gods obliged with 60km/h winds and hours of heavy rain
The tent didn't budge at all and felt like a perfect lil safe haven - exactly what I wanted for winter in the mountains :)
It feels incredibly well made and sturdy, although I do struggle with the weight of it on top of my winter sleep system, so I won't be able to walk too far with this tent. I've included some specs in the video. Here's a few things that I like and dislike about this tent so far..

It feels incredibly well made and sturdy, although I do struggle with the weight of it on top of my winter sleep system, so I won't be able to walk too far with this tent. I've included some specs in the video. Here's a few things that I like and dislike about this tent so far..
Likes:
- The quality. This is an extremely well made and solid tent
- The details. Adjustable ventilation panels, various ways to set the doors, zip flaps, and an outer that reaches the ground make this tent feel like it was made for mountain camping
- How much heat it holds in - in my experience it is 4-5°C warmer inside the tent than outside, and that's with a ventilation panel open too. This makes a huge difference in cold conditions
- It's freestanding and pitches inner and outer together - perfect for easy pitching in bad weather
- I'm able to cook in the vestibule in the rain, without water getting inside the inner or wetting my sleep system
- Most importantly, I feel safe in it, so far
Dislikes:
- Headroom - my head touches the top of the inner if I sit up straight
- The price! This is an insanely expensive tent. For me with the amount of camping I do in these kind of conditions it's a worthwhile investment. But for nice-weather camping in the woods, probably best to save your money
- The weight; 2.4kg packed weight (without footprint) is heavy for me for a backpacking tent. But unavoidable for a tent of such high quality and strong materials
- The condensation - this is also unavoidable due to the tent being constructed so that the outer goes all the way to the ground for insulation
My Winter Camping & Hiking Gear | 12kg Base Weight ..not light or cheap, but keeps me safe in cold

My Thoughts..
I tried a bivi bag camp in the rain to see how effective it would be in an emergency situation.
This was over 12 hours in wet, rainy conditions in a bivi bag with no other shelter and temps between 5°C and 7.5°C. I filmed this close to my car in case it went wrong (never clever to intentionally risk hypothermia)
I used the Alpkit Kloke lightweight bivi bag. It was not as entirely waterproof as I would have hoped, but I did still stay warm and dry, so would have survived unscathed and well in an actual emergency situation. The features of this bag (big hood, zip-up entrance hole) meant that no rain water came in the entrance hole - a big plus!
My sleeping bag - Leviathan OEX 900 - got wet on the outside. Not enough water came through the bivi bag to penetrate through my sleeping bag, so I was unaware that any water had come in until I was packing away the next morning. Mr Leviathan seems to have recovered from the ordeal haha! I used him for a camp in the woods a couple days ago and was lovely and warm, although it is mild at the moment. Hopefully no damage done 🤞
I had been putting this camp off for months as I thought it was going to be horrendous and uncomfortable but actually, I had a magical time. Now and again the clouds would clear and I would be sat, propped up against the roots of the fallen tree all warm and cosy, under the most beautiful sky full of stars. Then when the rain came, I'd duck back into the bivi bag, zip myself in and hide out. It was a wonderful experience, although not something I would normally chose to do in rain as the risk of the sleeping bag getting wrecked is quite high, and doing this over multiple wet nights would not be a good idea at all.

My Thoughts ..
Ahh, the Lanshan 2 in all its glory. A lot went wrong here. Despite being a bit of a pain, I still love this tent. But I’ll be saving it for summer haha!
Here's a summary of how it went ..
Night 1
I had a bit of a mare trying to get the tent up in some fairly strong wind but got there in the end. The pegs would ping out of the ground when tension was applied to the tent, so I anchored them in really securely with 3 pegs in each corner, which worked really well. However, not long after pitching the tent, the plastic door clip, which attaches the door to the guy, snapped clean off in a gust of wind. Thankfully I had carabiners with me, so I managed to fix it up with those. I also added carabiners to the door on the other side as a precaution.
The tent held up fine to the wind for the remainder of the night, but I woke in heavy rain to find that water had gotten inside, although I'm not sure where it was coming from. My things stayed dry thanks to my bivi bag and dry bags and I cleaned up the water with a microfiber towel. I hadn't seam sealed any part of this tent as the seams are taped, but I'm thinking I might need to seal it.. possibly the guy line attachment points on the sides are letting water in although I don't know for sure.
On packing the tent away, I found that one of my trekking poles had bent under the tension of the tent and would no longer unscrew or collapse down. I used it for the remainder of the trip, extended far too high for me for hiking, and had to bin it when I got home.
Night 2
I pitched the tent in heavy rain, not taking enough care to keep the inner covered with the fly, so the tent inner filled with water! I was able to soak it all up with my towel but soon realised that I'd pitched too close to the lake and was worried about the water level rising in the night. So, I unpegged the tent and dragged it further up away from the lake and then had a real battle to get it erected again in the gale force winds. This time seriously tested my patience. It was a constant struggle of the wind trying to blow the tent away, pegs flying out and poles falling down.
Just as I'd got the tent up, the peg-loop webbing on one of the corners broke - probably due to me using multiple pegs instead of just one (but using just one peg doesn't work, so what can you do). I made a new loop with an overhand knot, which held fine. During the night the poles started sliding and falling down, and this continued all through the night and into the next morning.
In conclusion ..
This tent is not designed for bad weather, and I deffo wouldn't recommend using it in cold weather, as there is just so much that can go wrong with it. However, being so light and using trekking poles, it is a tent that is popular among long-distance hikers, and on a long-distance trek, you are likely to encounter this kind of weather at some point. So, it's wise to take some precautions so that you can stay dry warm and safe in the tent if you do encounter bad weather;

This tent is not designed for bad weather, and I deffo wouldn't recommend using it in cold weather, as there is just so much that can go wrong with it. However, being so light and using trekking poles, it is a tent that is popular among long-distance hikers, and on a long-distance trek, you are likely to encounter this kind of weather at some point. So, it's wise to take some precautions so that you can stay dry warm and safe in the tent if you do encounter bad weather;
- Swap the plastic door hooks for metal ones before your trip. These can be hard to find, I get mine from Outdoor Gear Essentials (ZPacks Double-Hook Apparatus)
- Carry carabiners, in case something breaks
- Add some grip to your trekking poles. I applied some glue to the tops of my trekking poles before this trip, to make them more 'grippy'. This worked for the first night, but the friction had rubbed them smooth again by the second night. I might add a small piece of non-slip rubber to the top of my trekking poles in future
- Bring lots of extra pegs, or some super-hardcore pegs or ground anchors that won't easily be pulled out of the ground
- Bring something to mop up water - I like to bring a microfiber towel
- Use a bivi bag over your sleep system - if the tent fails, leaks or blows away, you'll survive in a bivi bag.
- Keep your clothes and electronics in dry bags
- Practice using a tension tent in bad weather at home before doing it for real out in the wild
- Consider seam-sealing the tent and sealing the guy line attachment points
- Be aware that very lightweight trekking poles like mine may bend under the tension

My Thoughts...
What can I say.. I love this tent!! All in, it's 350g heavier than my Pro1, and for this lil bit of extra weight, I get loads more room, more headroom, 2 doors, 2 huge vestibules, and 2 layers, so that I'm not soaking myself on the condensation from the outer. It also has lovely taped seams (no seam-sealing, hurray!) and while I've only had it out in a light shower I don't foresee any random puddle issues.. but I won't speak too soon 😄
I love that I get to use my trekking poles, as traditional tent poles make me a bit nervous since I had them snap in the wind earlier in the year on Chnict. Having said that, I don't know how this would perform in high wind.. I have a feeling the poles might get knocked down, but for me that is preferable to poles snapping.
The bathtub floor is thin, just as with the Pro 1, so I use a footprint with it, just as I do with the pro 1.
I found this tent much easier to set up properly than the Pro 1 - the Pro 1 tended to sag and it was difficult to get the corners of the bathtub floor to stand upright, but the 2 was fine
This tent came with me on my recent Rhinogs trip (video of this trip is next on the editing pile) and it was just perfect 👌
