It was a warm and humid afternoon in late June and I'd been missing my English Adventure, Stranded.

So, I decided to jump in the car and take a drive up to Northamptonshire, to one of the footpaths that I had walked on that long journey. I had no plan, a small tarp and a bivi bag, and my map showed that there was an open access woodland not too far away, so I headed for that, passing by a big muddy puddle teeming with bugs, but not thinking much of it

The woods were beautiful, quiet, all long grass and wildflowers. I’d forgotten my trekking poles so I fashioned a walking stick from a fallen branch and found a lil nook to pop my tarp up and settle down for the night

I heated up a home-made chicken curry as the bugs came out. Mozzies and glow worms buzzed about, muntjac barked, pheasants squawked and crows cawed. And then it was dark.

I had absolutely no sleep this night, due to three things;

🦉 A persistent squeaky bird that squeaked all. night. long. And I could still hear it through my ear plugs

🔦 Weird bright lights through the trees all night. At first, I thought it was other people, so I turned my own lights off and sat quietly watching, hoping to go unnoticed. But then I realised, there was no sound. Surely if it were people, I would hear them in the quiet of the woods at night, but aside from the godawful squeaky bird, all was eerily silent

🦟 The mozzies, which had already bitten me through my clothes at dusk, and now in the early hours once in my sleeping bag, decided to start attacking my face instead, right through my lil bug net. They tormented me buzzing around my head and the itching was driving me nuts

So all in all, this was not the relaxing night out that I had in mind. I’d never experienced the mozzies going for my face so relentlessly before and it’s kinda put me off bivi camping in the summer a bit.. but, it was so lovely to go exploring a bit closer to home and get out of my usual, local woods

GEAR LIST - Stealth Camping in PLAIN Sight

MY THOUGHTS

I’d tried stealth camping close to this road before, hidden in a bit of a divot in the ground, and pulled it off quite successfully, so this time I decided to try it in plain sight instead

It was all going a bit wonky from the start..

Firstly, I bought green woodland camo netting, as I was expecting the area to be full of waist-high ferns. However, the ferns were low and sparse, so the green camo was totally the wrong colour.

Secondly, there was a red ants next right under where I wanted to run my tarp from a tree in a low plough point configuration that would be easy to blend into the ground.

But, not being one to give up easily, I gave it a go anyway, placing the shelter further toward the road, away from the ants, and using a low-ish lean-to configuration, that would be just high enough for me to be able to sit behind it unnoticed, hopefully

The camo netting being the wrong colour wasn’t too much of an issue in the end, as the texture of it allowed me to weave sticks into it and hold leaves and debris in place, making it satisfactorily blend into the surrounding colours. Once finished, I felt confident that I wouldn’t be seen by any passing vehicles, but I didn’t feel confident that I would go unnoticed by anyone walking by. But this was a country road with no paths, so I wasn’t expecting people to be walking along it anyway

All was going well. I cooked my dinner and settled for bed completely unnoticed, except by the crows that cawed loudly from above, warning each other of my presence. I really thought I was going to pull it off, until late, when something strange started to happen. Cars kept pulling up and stopping on the other side of the road, not far from my shelter. The people inside would get out, look around the nearby trees with torches, and talk in hushed tones, before driving off, soon to be replaced by another car doing the same thing. And then another. And another.

I sat in silence in the dark, reminding myself that it was likely just me that was the weirdo here, but my heart was pounding, terrified that they would come too close and see my shelter. My gut was telling me to leave. So, each time a car pulled off, I would start packing up in the dark, then I would sit quietly and wait again, and then I would pack up again, and on it went until eventually all of my things were in my rucksack, and I crept off back into the woods where I had come from, following the familiar paths back to where I was parked on the other side.

So this one was a fail.. I hadn’t anticipated people stopping in the road and looking around with head torches in the dead of night, but it was good stealth practice and certainly gave my nerves a good rattle haha!

My THoughts

Some of you suggested that I seam-seal my leaky, giant umbrella, so I did ☔

Then I dragged it out to the mountains to give it a good testing in some heavy rain. It appears to have worked! I had such a gorgeous night out in a dry lil umbrella nook, slept for 10 hours! (I had just filmed a night out in a survival shelter the night before, so was glad of the long rest) and I decided to have a dip in the river on the way out – a nice refreshing 13.7°C. Met a lovely grasshopper. It was even dry to set up, and dry to pack away, while getting to listen to the rain for hours overnight- perfection!

And now I know that it’s waterproof, I can move on to my next plans for the brolly. Just waiting for a bad enough weather forecast on one of my camping weekends. He may get destroyed, but hopefully I can stay dry for a while beforehand

My Thoughts

A new tarp configuration.. I’m calling this one a forest tent. Isn’t it the cutest!

This was super simple to set up - just a case of pegging in the back centre point and then lifting the front with the sticks, tensioning with a guy rope and pegging down the front corners

I then got to work cooking a beef curry from scratch, made with sirloin steak, and had a lovely sleep among the trees, waking to light rain showers pitter-pattering on the tarp

I even caught some sweet fallow deer on one of my trail cams too!

This is a lovely, simple configuration that provides great coverage, and is nice and sheltered due to the back being tapered down to the ground. The spare flappage at the back gets folded under, creating a covered floor area at the rear. You could also hang the front from a ridgeline instead of using sticks. One of my new favs!

Trip Journal

I took my DCF tent out for a trial run in the rain and did some chaotic but delicious cooking!

It was late April and plenty of rain was forecast, so I took myself out to the woods to have a soggy night out in the Xmid Pro1, just to check it was all sound really before taking it on a longer adventure.

As it got dark, I started cooking my tea – chicken tikka masala baps. You’d think this would be quite simple really, but I somehow managed to smoke myself out. The food was absolutely delicious though! One of my favourite woodland meals so far (I know I always say that)

As I settled down to eat my creation, rain started to fall, just lightly. But it continued all through the night, getting heavier and giving the woods a good drenching. I’d actually never seen these woods so full of water, there are no streams here usually but, on this morning, they had popped up all over the place.

The tent did very well, a very small amount of manageable condensation but no leaks or other water-related dramas to report on, so I feel confident in taking this out for multi-day trips. I also tried a new bivi bag, this is the Mountain Equipment Ion.. can’t report on how well it works yet, but as soon as I’ve given it a good ol’ WildBeare Torture Test I’ll let you know

MY THOUGHTS

It was time to dust of my old friend – the Giant Leaky Umbrella

This time for a stealth camp. I just love the dome-like space under this umbrella, and thought it would make a perfect frame to build a stealth den for the night

There was some rain and wind forecast for the next morning, so my first job was to anchor it down as securely as I could, and make it waterproof (gotta love an umbrella that isn’t actually waterproof!) Being an umbrella, it is of course the perfect shape to get whipped away by a gust of wind, so I guyed it down from all of my modded attachment points, and from the middle point at the back. I then clipped my real light, DCF tarp over the top of it to make it waterproof.

Next came the camo netting, followed by leaves and sticks, until my lil den just looked like a big pile of woodland stuff. From above, it was nearly invisible, however from the ground you could still make out the dome-like structure.
I messed up a bit, because by building the den with the doorway facing away from the wind, I had unwittingly set it up with the doorway instead facing a small path, pretty close by that I didn’t know was there. So, I hoped for the best that no one would come along

I got my lil nook all set up inside and settled down to make my most delicious camping meal yet. I cooked lamb chops in garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper, and then fried up some pre-cooked rice in the meat juices. A lil weevil friend walked around the rim of my pot over and over and over, and I snuggled down for a lovely sleep in the woods

I woke to gusts of wind, followed by the pitter-patter of rain on my shelter. It felt real cosy, and as I sat and had my breakfast, the weather really came in, with a random and short-lived mini rain storm. My lil shelter held fast in some pretty strong gusts of wind and was a lovely way to spend a night in the woods :)

With my small tarp and a bivi bag, I wombled my way up to a beautiful mountain lake and made up a stealthy, low-profile lil nook to spend the night. My camp was totally hidden from view by bushy heather to my right and a rocky rise to my left

I spent the evening watching Geese Friends going back and forth between adjacent lakes, beating each other up and bobbing around on the water. The stars sparkled above me and I fell asleep before midnight (unlike me) and woke early to a pink moon rising over rocky crags in the south. It was chilly, around 5°C so I went back to sleep a while before enjoying a relaxed breakfast in the early spring sunshine

My Thoughts

My first attempt at a proper stealthy hammock camp

I looove hammock camping (I find it so comfy!) but I don’t do it often as I always feel so obvious and visible hanging above the ground. So for this camp I decided to stealth it up using 3 panels of camo netting. I used the hammock with no bug net, just a head bug net to wear while sleeping. I went tarpless for this one as no rain was forecast, although I did have a ground sheet that I could chuck over myself if things became unexpectedly wet. I’m glad it didn’t rain though as this might have been a bit of a chaotic arrangement!

I had such a nice night in the woods - my first mild night out this year, playing suduko, spotting muntjac, eating spagbol, watching a spider eat an unfortunate woodlouse, making friends with a moth and just chilling in my comfy lil nook. In the morning there were loads of dog walkers on the nearby paths, so I got to test out my stealthiness and managed to go completely unseen

My THoughts

My first DCF tent! (Dyneema Composite Fabric) Just 485g.. kinda crazy! I was hoping to find something a bit stealthier, maybe a camo DCF tent, but I wasn’t able to find anything in those kinda colours. So, I decided to go with the Durston X-mid, as I’ve been very impressed with the heavier non-pro version

I really liked this tent but more importantly, my floppy joints will really enjoy the weight of it. I’m hoping to do some longer trips soon now that spring is (apparently) here and providing the weather will (please) warm up enough for me to carry a lighter sleeping bag, I’ll be feeling light as a feather :D ..pure joy after hauling 18kg on my back all winter

This single skin tent is so easy to pitch – just peg out the 4 corners, insert the trekking poles and you’re good to go. Optional guy lines can be attached if it’s windy, but are not necessary to erect the tent. You can buy this tent with either a silnylon floor, or a DCF floor. I opted for silnylon, as I’ve previously put a load of holes in my DCF tarp by using it as a ground sheet. DCF may be strong, but it has no ‘give’ in it and in my experience, it punctures easily. The silnylon floor adds 45g to the tent (440g with the DCF floor or 485g with the silnylon floor)

I really enjoyed how the tent is kinda transparent – I could see and feel the sun shining through, see the rain drops sliding down the fabric of the tent and the outlines of the surrounding hills and mountains. It appears to be well made, with heat-sealed seams (no seam sealing required, hurray!) and I’m confident in the construction of it, having previously given the non-pro version a bad weather testing, which is the same shape and uses the same ‘principles of geometry’. There are two large pockets inside. The 2 vestibules are huge, the head room I awesome and it just feels like a nice place to hang out.

Drawbacks so far that I’ve noticed – the magnetic door closures don’t hold the doors open in wind. I had this same issue on the non-pro version, the magnets just aren’t strong enough to compete with gusty wind. Also, it’s bright in there.. while I enjoyed the see-through aspect, this could be problematic for sleeping – you’ll need a good eye mask. The floor is real thin, but this is to be expected with a super lightweight tent. I’m using it with its dedicated ground sheet for an extra layer of protection. I couldn’t see anywhere to hang a light from, but it was no issue to place my light into one of the interior pockets, or hang it from the wrist strap of one of my trekking poles. As with all DCF tents, it has a screwed-up-carrier-bag appearance, but I didn’t find it to be particularly noisy (except when the open doors come undone from the magnetic tabs and start flapping around haha)

As usual, there are not enough pegs included with the tent to cover all eventualities. It comes with x4 16g 8” DAC stakes for the tent corners, and x4 7g 6” DAC stakes for guy lines. However, you might also want additional pegs, for pitching out the door flap when sitting with the door open, or for pegging down the side panels of the tent.

The tent retained barely half a degree of heat compared to outside, but this is not an issue as I bought this tent specifically for summer trips. It can feel breezy inside, but this can be improved by pitching the tent lower to the ground (this will in turn of course massively increase condensation). Unless breezy and well ventilated, condensation will be an issue as it is with all single-skin shelters, so always bring something to clean it up with, and use a bivi bag over your sleeping bag.
I’ll be trying this tent on a rainy night soon and I’m looking forward to taking it out on a longer hike!

My Thoughts

The long wet winter of 2024 continues, and it was time to try my £21 tent in the mountains – with my trusty bivi bag of course, as I don’t have a death wish. I’d put this one off for ages as I thought it would be pretty grim.. I was right

This was by no means a bad weather test; nothing more than a light rain and some clag, but definitely a step in the wrong direction from the local woodland camp with it last year. I sure noticed a difference in enjoyability haha!

Firstly, I’d forgotten how tiny it is. So small that my sleeping mat buckled up when I tried to fit it inside. But, this is a 2-man tent apparently, so I bought me old pal Frank to get a feel for the sizing. Well, it was cramped. I would say ‘cosy’, but the water everywhere kinda negated any cosy vibes

Condensation is to be expected in a single skin tent, but the issue with this one is the size, and the fact that there’s no drainage. I was constantly touching the wet sides and hitting my head on the roof. My bivi bag & dry bags were essential, as by the morning, there were actual puddles in the tent, some from where the trapped condensation had pooled, and some had leaked in through the door area (I think)

The poles were suspiciously bendy. The lack of vestibule was frustrating, and the tent literally wasn’t long enough for me to lay down in stretched out. My conclusion so far is that this shouldn’t actually be marketed as a tent, but as a gear storage shed. Size-wise, it could be a child tent, but I feel it would be cruel to put a child in it, so I’ll stick with shed

The next trip with the shed will likely be the ol’ bad weather test, so hopefully that’ll finish the poor thing off (although I have to say, I will find it pretty funny if it performs really well)

My Thoughts

Ahh a lovely fully enclosed tarp configuration. This one is called the Pyramid.

This is a super-simple set up, although I had some trouble initially, as I found that my trekking pole wasn’t quite long enough to erect it, leaving me with a floppy tarp (never a good thing). This pole claims to be 132cm, but I measure it as 125cm fully extended, and 5cm of that is the spike, which just sinks into this kind of ground.

So, I decided instead to suspend it from a ridge line, strung between the adjacent trees. This worked really well, and had the added bonus of no pole getting in the way

I thought this arrangement looked so pretty in the fading light, and decided to name her Primrose – Primrose the Pyramid. I found that Primrose’s flaps were quite annoying. This formation would be amazing in bad weather, great protection from the elements, but on a dry evening getting in and out, I just kept getting caught up in the flaps

I got the fire going and cooked up some delicious sausage and onion baps before settling down for a lovely sleep in the woods

I woke to a chorus of birds, a tawny owl and crows, and sat in the doorway of the tarp, wondering if I could modify this set-up somehow. I played around lifting one side and created a new, much more open configuration, and sat to have breakfast with woodland views

I just love how versatile tarps are!

MY THOUGHTS

Ahh I’m back here again! Just about enough time had passed for me to have forgotten the horrors of the two previous attempts, so it was time for round 3 of Stone Hut with a Tarp.

Armed with a bigger tarp, a massive pole and a healthy dose of Being A Stubborn Cow, I took a drenching as I wrestled my 3.5x3.5m multicam over the old slate construction in the wind, shoved a pole up in the middle and hoped for the best

Would this be third time lucky.. or another fail?

So far, so good. It had taken 1.5 hours to set up the tarp, but it seemed pretty solid. Every guy line was well anchored down with rocks and the pole was working a treat – creating a pitch in the roof so that the water ran straight off instead of pooling on top, and holding the whole thing nice and taught

The extra fabric of the larger sized tarp allowed for a sizable flap to come over the doorway – this stopped the rain coming in through the door, and for the first time, it felt relatively dry inside

A small tear had already developed on the front where the tarp had ripped on the sharp slate, but other than that, there didn’t seem to be any major issues. I just had to hope that this small tear didn’t turn into oh-dear-my-tarp’s-been-ripped-in-half like the first attempt

I changed into my dry clothes and settled down in my sleeping bag for some hot noodles, fully expecting to have to bail at any moment. But the hours ticked by, the wind and the rain continued, and still everything held in place. This was promising, and as bedtime approached and I was still sheltered, I was beginning to feel quietly confident

As darkness fell, an occasional gust would come and knock the pole out of place, but it was easy to just pop it back in place. The wind got up and the tarp shook, but still it held fast. I fell asleep sometime after midnight, and woke up as the sky was starting to get light.. somewhat surprised to still have a roof above my head

I had done it! A dry(ish) night in the old stone hut. This time around, it had been a brilliant shelter. As I examined the state of things in the morning, I found that bigger rips were forming in the tarp, but none had affected me on this night. As far as I was concerned, this was a success, and I was glad that I had come back to try again

My Thoughts

This was the lightest tarp I’ve ever used as a shelter – DCF and only 88g. I tried this out on a sort of stop-off camp, when I was on my way somewhere else and had a rucksack full of gear for the next nights camp. This shelter was so light and small, I could have put it in my pocket.. so I was fully expecting it to get ripped in half in the winds. But the lil thing just kept taking it, and made it through the night unscathed

One of my guy lines snapped at one point, so I had to lower the back corner, which made for quite a cramped living arrangement. I also accidently pitched under a holly bush but somehow managed to avoid popping my sleeping mat. And unwittingly filled a boot with rain water. All-in-all, a pretty chaotic lil camp, but great conditions to test out the tarp in

I also made a tiny friend, a sweet little Robin. I didn’t realise he was in most of the footage right up until it got dark, so that was very cute indeed. He most likely was wondering what the maniac human was doing on his turf

MY THOUGHTS

Ahh, 16 hours in a bivi bag in wind and rain. I imagined that I had lost my tent off a cliff in a gale and had to survive the night in the mountains without it. How would that go, making do with just my emergency lightweight bivi bag for a shelter?
I always have one in my rucksack, but usually I’m using it just to protect my sleeping bag from condensation in the tent. With no tent, I intended to find out why it’s so important to carry one of these

I expected this to be an utterly grim experience, but actually, it was pretty wonderful.

I was fortunate enough to start out in dry conditions with only the wind to contend with, and picked a sweet lil nook among the rocks, where I’d be able to rest propped up and comfortable. I popped up for a quick look at the sunset (one of the most beautiful I’ve seen), and got myself settled into the bag. Rucksack next to me, using the waterproof liner as my storage compartment

The rain came and I simply pulled the big rain hood over my head and waited it out. No bother. It felt strange to feel so cosy and warm while laying out in that weather, with the wind booming through the mountains like a freight train
And then the wind changed direction and started hitting me head-on.. no longer sheltered by my little nook, it was quite amusing, watching all the random debris of broken grass and twigs flying around in the air
As I dozed, sometimes the clouds would part, and I would stir and find myself under a sky of bright, sparkly stars.
The wind eased off after midnight, and I slept deeply for 7 hours, waking up to morning rain. Well rested and still warm and dry, the only dislike was having cold hands in the morning. Oh and trying to pack it up in the rain. My sleeping bag was slightly wet on the outside, but not enough to penetrate, and I had survived a bad weather winter night on the mountain, safe and well.

It’s nice to know I have this option if things go wrong. And it reminds me why I always carry a bivi bag of some kind – this one is 285g that could save my life

Bivi Chat! 🤓 The wetness inside the bivi bag on this occasion is not condensation – a week later I put the dry bivi bag outside in light rain for a few hours (all zipped up without me in it) and it again got wet on the inside where water had seeped through the fabric. Not through the seams specifically, but all over, through the fabric itself. I had also placed a dry towel inside, which got damp. Here's a few pics of how the inside looked after it had been out a while, you can see that it isn't dry..

This (Alpkit Kloke) is a very lightweight /285g, breathable bivi bag and so a small amount of water does eventually seep through if you are in prolonged wet conditions. However, in my experience it is a small amount, and not enough to penetrate through the down of the sleeping bag, but the outside of the sleeping bag becomes wet.

The large storm hood is also ridiculously helpful when sheltering from the elements – a feature that my more robust & waterproof bivi bags don’t have. My Alpkit Hunka bivi bags for example, are heavier, thicker, and do seem to be more waterproof. But they don’t have a storm hood, so I imagine it would be quite difficult (maybe impossible?) to stop rain water coming in through the head/face opening instead. And that would make for a difficult and uncomfortable night when no other shelter is available.

I don’t tend to get condensation in my bivi bags, maybe because I’m such a coldy, but if you aren’t as much of a cold-blooded vampire as me and are prone to getting condensation inside them, it’s worth bearing in mind that the more waterproof your bivi bag is, the more condensation you’re gonna get. Your sleeping bag might actually get just as damp or wet from condensation in a very waterproof bag, as it might in a breathable bag that doesn’t cause much condensation but lets a little water through instead

I’m unsure how this bivi bag would perform in prolonged, heavy, relentless rain that didn’t stop all night, but I suspect it would still be enough of a barrier to prevent hypothermia and keep you alive in a bad situation. Alpkit call this bivi bag ‘waterproof’, which I think is a bit misleading. ‘Water resistant’ would be a more accurate description, but I still think it’s a great bit of kit, and currently it’s always in my rucksack on my multi-night trips, to protect my sleeping bag from condensation in the tent and as a backup in case of emergency.

I’m looking for other bivi bags to try – my ideal would be one that is as robust and waterproof as the Hunka’s, with the low weight and storm hood of the Kloke (a girl can dream, right?!)

My Thoughts

Ooh, I do love bad-weather testing tents! On this December day, it was the turn of the Durston X-Mid 1 to get a good seeing to. I was pretty sceptical of my flimsy-looking shelter and was fully prepared for a potential surviving-the-night-in a-ruined-tent type of situation.

However, to my surprise, none of that happened.

The afternoon started with standard Welsh weather, nothing fancy.. 21km/hr gusts and rain. The tent went up easily and I settled down for the night, bracing for the coming gales that were forecast for the next day.

The tent took the weather like a champ all night. I found that the magnetic door toggles don't hold the doors open in strong wind, so I needed to use a clip when cooking etc - just a minor issue. And a bit of rain water sprayed in occasionally via one of the vents, but after closing them, I woke in the morning dry and well rested.

The winds continued to increase, and on that rocky outcrop in front of the tent, I measured gale-force 65km/hr gusts. However, the gusts by the tent just a few meters away were not quite as severe, being blocked slightly by the rock. The tent was, however, still taking near-gales (I measured 59km/hr next to it), with no issue whatsoever. I didn't even have to use the Delta pegs or stronger guy lines that I'd bought

Curious, I unpegged the guy lines to see what would happen. This is a tent that doesn’t require guy lines to hold it up – it’s certainly the only trekking pole tent that I’ve tried that calls guys ‘optional’..

Free of the guys, the tent swayed and shook in the high winds, but still did not budge. The poles stayed exactly in place. Nothing broke. Nothing fell down. Nothing happened at all aside from some flapping polyester.

I still have an inconvenient dislike of the non-stealthy colour of this tent. And these wind speeds, in my mind, still do not constitute being able to confirm if it is “stormworthy” or not.. but damn, did this impress me, and it is definitely bad-weather-worthy. Which I did not expect.

My Thoughts

A night out under my poncho.. except this one turns into a tent! Well, sort of. The poncho becomes the fly, and the arm holes become the vents. You can use it like this, just as it is, like a lil tarp-type open shelter. Or, you can stick the matching mesh tent underneath it to create a bug-proof tent thing.

It all seems pretty damn cool, and it’s a fun concept. But I still can’t get my head around these poncho shelters.
First off, you still need to wear a rain coat, for two reasons. The sleeves are far too short to keep your arms dry. And then there’s that familiar poncho-shelter-problem.. if it’s raining, you’re going to get wet when you have to take off the poncho to erect it as a shelter. So, you end up just wearing it over your raincoat, which in my opinion defeats the object of it being a multi-purpose piece of gear.

Pitching this inner first would be a bad idea in rain, as it would just fill up with water. So, I tried to pitch it fly-first, which I found a bit faffy. But it was my first time and I guess I’d be better at it now that I know how it all works

I felt so cosy in this with my lil lantern glowing, enjoying a tasty home cooked chicken tikka masala and listening to the owls and the crows. I tried a mini hot water bottle for this camp, which I found to be a less effective method for warming myself than my electronic hand warmers. The lil hot water bottle only stayed warm 2-3 hours, compared to my handwarmer which chucks out heat all night long. The handwarmer, although I consider it heavy, is considerably lighter than a hot water bottle plus the extra water I had to carry in to fill it with

I settled down for the night, and slept so soundly that I didn’t wake up at all as the rain started coming through the front mesh. By morning the floor was soggy, and my pillow was damp. Not really an issue as I always use a bivi bag, but could become a bit of an annoyance, particularly if you are to be out for more than one night. There's also no vestibule, so everything has to be in the 1-person sleeping space with you, or else shoved under the fly

All that being said, I loved camping with this. I loved the colour and how discrete it was. I loved the ‘feel’ of it.. it felt woodlandly and lovely. Not the most technical terms, but you know what I mean, it felt nice and I felt at home in it. I’ve come to realise that I am such a lover of going unnoticed, that I prefer to camp in a stealthy shelter that lets a bit of water in, than a noticeable shelter that stays totally dry inside

This seems to be well made too, with taped seams, to stop the rain from leaking through the roof (while it comes straight in through the front mesh instead haha!) I do think the poncho fly would make an excellent emergency or lunch shelter for summer hiking though. And, apparently you can join two of these ponchos together, to create a tipi tent! Walking into the woods wearing two ponchos just sounds too wonderfully ridiculous, so I’ll definitely be trying that at some point

My Thoughts

I got me a new tent! ⛺️ First night out with my Durston X-Mid 1

The video for this one is a bit of a weird mish-mash, between being a first-look-new-tent video as intended, and then some oh-god-there's-someone-lurking-over-there kinda stuff that I wasnt planning on

So firstly, the tent. I got this as I love my lightweight Lanshans, but they have caused me some bother.. namely, being pretty rubbish in bad weather

But this tent claims to be both light and 'stormworthy'.. a bold claim indeed, but amazing if it actually is.

The geometery-based design is quite unique, making it far studier than you'd expect - you don't even need to use guy lines. The biggest downside for me is the colour.. I feel obvious and noticeable in it, which is a shame, as I much prefer to blend in.

This first look was a cold, fair weather autumn camp. There was an unnerving experience in the middle when, due to unknowingly pitching close to a tiny path which was hidden by fallen leaves, a person strolled behind my tent at dusk, and then decided to lurk around a while, hanging around and investigating my camp from a distance. As soon as he left I chucked my stuff back into my rucksack and got the hell outta there, walking by the light of the moon to an old trusty spot (which was really hard to find in the dark haha), where I've never been seen before and I felt safe. Give me weird nature noises and spooky tales any day, but other people are my worst fear in the woods.

Camping in a very visible tent reminded why I like to stealth camp with tarps and camo netting 'n all that jazz

My Thoughts

A Fully Enclosed Tarp Set-Up! One of the coolest configurations that I’ve tried so far - so simple, yet practical and versatile too

I used my 3.5x3.5m multicam tarp for this, and attached it to a tree, although you could also use a ridgeline. Arranged in this fashion, using a few pegs and cordage, this fully-enclosed set-up provides 3 walls, a full-coverage floor, a door and complete rain protection. I was also able to temporarily open up one side so that I could do some sheltered fire-cooking in the rain (sirloin steak on my firebox – so good!)

The headroom is insane in this, loads of space inside too, I think it’s just amazing – a new fav of mine. Not a drop of water came in, despite it raining most of the night. I have no idea how this would hold up in wind, though, as it was nice and still in the woods

My Thoughts

I set up my superlight tarp in the forest - a plow point from a tree, nestled among moss-covered rocks. I loved this lil set-up so much.. it felt so cosy as the rain came down and I settled in my sleeping bag and had my tea. But just as it had gotten dark, I suddenly saw lights moving through the forest. I turned my own lights off and waited for them to pass, but they stayed. The lights moved around in one general area, occasionally flashing in my direction, the light passing over my camp as I would sit frozen still hoping to not be seen

I waited around for an hour and felt more and more on edge, just sitting in the dark. I would never have been able to sleep now, so I decided to leave. I managed to pack up my entire camp in the pitch black by touch alone, only using dim light when I was ready to leave, to check I hadn’t left anything behind. It was kinda cool to find that I know my gear so well that I can pack away blindly

On my womble down through the forest, it was hard to make out the rough paths in the dark and there were more lights, in different places. I’d not travelled far from my car due to my poorly ankle, so I guess I was more likely to run into others. I kinda take it for granted that I’m alone out there, and it made me nervous to find out that I wasn’t

Back at the car, I drove to a quiet layby nearby, made a hot drink and arranged my car bed. The heavenly display above Landy was breathtaking – one of the most beautiful night skies that I’ve ever seen. I slept soundly for 8 hours and woke to the sun peeping through the autumn foliage before driving home, well rested and, in retrospect, loving my little misadventure

Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan, but that’s ok. I may have disliked realising that I wasn’t alone.. and the fearful avenues that my mind goes down when it conjures up the possible dark consequences of running into possibly dark humans alone at night. But as always, once I wake, alive and well I am full of gratitude for it all – I loved so many things about this lil trip

My THoughts

Ahh, a night in the wind and rain in a Dinky Lil Tent

This is the Snugpak Ionosphere, and I thought it would be fun to try it out in a nice exposed spot and see what it’s made of. First you notice that it pitches inner first, which wasn’t an issue for this camp as it wasn’t raining when I pitched the tent. But pitching an inner first tent in rain is always a bit dodgy as the inner can fill up with water

The tent was easy to set up and I soon had all my gear inside, and my happy helper Frank to assist. Snugpak call this a one-person shelter, which will take 2 in an emergency. As you can see, it takes 2 people, but it’s a bit romantic. You’ll never get 2 mats in it, but it could provide shelter for 2 in a life-threatening situation

I found camping with this tent a bit annoying. There’s no vestibule of course, so no shelter for cooking, or to store your rucksack or boots (which I kept between the inner and the fly). You can’t sit up in it unless you sit in the doorway with the door open, which obviously isn’t an option in rain. And when you are confined inside because of rain, it’s cramped as hell. My usually neatly arranged possessions were all over the place and I ended up with a sore neck from all the contorting in the tiny space.

But, to sleep in, it was just fine. It makes a great stealth shelter being only 75cm high, and for once, there were no leaky seams. Not even any condensation due to the wind. I measured gusts of up to 37km/hr but had no concerns in this lil bad boy, as it’s so low profile with a small surface area, this kinda wind was no issue for it at all. It kept me safe and dry, and I found it to be very good at being what it is ~ a very tiny tent. If you like that kinda thing.

The stars shone between rain showers and I woke to the most beautiful sunny morning in the mountains, a real treat after the cramped rainy night

My Thoughts

I was so excited to head out in what I assumed was just going to be a standard rainy night, and make a cosy nook under my giant umbrella. This is a 2.2m wide fishing umbrella, but I thought it might make a perfect camping shelter.

Initial findings were that the plastic D-loop attachment points on the brolly were rubbish, and one of them fell off as soon as I tried the umbrella at home. So, I set about making new attachment points, with metal D-loops and webbing, and sewing them on securely. I replaced the two at the back of the brolly, and the 2 on the flappy side panel bits. And I added x4 new ones across the front of the brolly, in case it needed to be anchored from the front too.

Now this of course isn’t something you would want to use on a windy night – I’d assume that it would just get smashed to bits, but I figured it would be ok on a fairly still night in sheltered woods. I took a small tarp with me, just in case I needed it.
I loved setting up my sleep system under the brolly, it felt like being in a cave – nice and sheltered but with gorgeous views out too. However, as the rain started again at night and passing thunderstorms rumbled about, it soon started to leak. Water was coming through all the seams. I chucked my lil tarp over the brolly, which did the trick, but did kind of defeat the object of using the brolly

Regardless, I loved this setup. It was one of my favourites. It was heavy to carry in (the brolly alone weighing about 2.6kg, and that’s without the groundsheet and spare tarp that I needed to carry in too. So not overly practical, and I possibly looked a bit of a lunatic walking in with it haha, but there was something about it that I really loved. It was cosy and fun, and it gave me playing-dens-vibes.

I absolutely loved my first experience of sleeping wild during a thunderstorm. I was camped at low elevation, and the storms were always a few miles away, which is still never entirely safe but considerably safer than being directly under one. I got to relax under my massive brolly and watch the sky light up, and wait for the rumbles while the rain poured. It was just perfection and I feel very lucky to have experienced it
